MHA admissions Fall '14

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Havent heard a peep from JHU. Should I ask them why? They are the only school I am waiting on. Heard back from everywhere else.

It wouldn't hurt anything, but based on previous years (ie old threads here and on gradcafe for MHA), this is pretty typical. A few scattered decisions in Jan/Feb and then a batch in early/mid march.
So no interviews for us?

Ugh just got my financial aid estimate from GW- More like a confirmation that I qualify for the full amount of grad stafford and direct loans. Will probably cross this school off my list...

For any of you wondering about their COA- $55,711 for the 2014-2015 school year.

My GRE scores are lower than yours so I guess I won't be receiving any scholarships from GWU too :/

The post office finally managed to deliver my mail. Received my package from USC (which should have been here last Thursday). Full tuition Dean's Merit scholarship. Really, really pumped. For future cycles (to compare and stuff), my numbers and stuff are in my profile.
THAT IS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Congrats! Do you think that is where you'll be attending?

So I totally lied about UCLA's tuition. From the department of health policy and management's website:

Resident of California: $22,009.19
Non-resident of California: $34,710.19

Major congrats on USC! Especially if you'd want to get a job in LA/OC after you graduate. Half of the families I grew up with bleed cardinal red. It really is a fantastic network out here.

Are you in-state?

Has anyone heard from Michigan about financial aid? UM is my top choice but the price is making it hard to justify that.

same here. There are a lot better options i could go to if I'm going to be paying full price

Can anyone shed some light on Penn State's MHA program? I see that not many apply/discuss this program. Why is it? Any opinions/insights is appreciated.

the COLUMBIA website mentions the tuition fees as 33000$. can anyone tell me if it is per year or for both the years. Couldn't figure it out from the webpage.

The MPH crew concluded that it is per year. FWIW, I agree with their conclusion.
yeah its weird because all the other programs including executive MHA has tuition costs mentioned clearly

Anyone who got into Columbia receive the orgsync info yet?

Lol kidding just got it

Anyone know how long it takes to be considered a resident in a state? I will likely be attending an out of state program (Ohio-State) and their out of state tuition is 30k and 12k for in state. Any way by year 2 I am considered an in-state resident? Not famililar with how that works..

^ programs usually don't let you gain residency when attending/living there for school reasons, otherwise programs would only ever have kids paying freshman tuition OOS and then everyone considered instate

Actually, some schools like UNC will try to help you get in-state tuition after the first year. It's definitely not guaranteed though, because you have to prove that you intend to stay in NC for the "long-term". This involves getting a North Carolina driver's license, license plate, residing in the state for at least a year, etc. There's a process where you submit all of that information to a committee who determines whether you should be given an in-state residency status or not, and if they deny you then you have a chance to appeal their decision.

I know you can get residency status in Florida after six months, and it really varies by state. Either the state government website or the school website should have information about that.

I'm assuming that's per year?

Yes, it is per year. Though I imagine there will be a slight increase for the second year.

Are you in-state?

Yes, I'm a CA resident.

I was wondering where I got my previous numbers and could have sworn they were from UCLA's open house last fall so I looked up my notes from it. The rep from Fielding said tuition is $14,809 for in-state and 72% of students are funded through merit-based scholarships with an average award of $14,000/year. I did see, however, that there's an additional fee of about $7,000 for professional degrees on their website. I'm not quite sure why they failed to mention this as part of the tuition at the open house.

Yeah, my Quant score is at a weird place to qualify for their merit scholarships. You need 70% in all sections and (I think) a 3.5 GPA. I was 69% in Quant. It's kinda laughable, but hey, gotta have some kind of guidelines!

Totes, I'd rather stay in California (not my first choice) and pay half as much as GW at UCLA. Plus, it honestly didn't feel like the right fit for me, so I'm gonna chalk this one up as a nudge to get me to the right school.

Hi guys,

I've been watching this space since applying for MHA programs in December and just wanted to say thanks for all the info - its been very useful and has kept me motivated and positive to see so many of you guys get into your first choice universities! Was just wondering if anyone has heard from Yale (Healthcare Management Program)? They have been radio silent.. I'm also starting to get worried about my application to Columbia, as it appears many of you have already gotten your offers - spoke to admissions and apparently not everyone will be getting their offers between February and March which is worrying news!

Anyone leaning towards UNC? I need someone to go through this house hunting process with.

Hey I'm waiting on Columbia as well! What did you mean by 'apparently not everyone will be getting their offers between February and March'? You mean that some people will have to wait till after March to receive a decision?

Hi, i received an email from OSU after interviewing with them recently...the email is copy pasted below:

Your application for financial aid has been selected for verification. Your action is required.

Dear X:

Your application for financial aid has been selected for verification. To meet this federally mandated requirement, you must document that the information you reported on your FAFSA is accurate.

To learn what materials are being requested and when each is due:

  1. Go to buckeyelink.osu.edu.
  2. Newly enrolled (incoming) students: Click the Future Students tab at the top. Under the Finances section, click Financial Aid Status.

Continuing students: Click the Students tab at the top. Under the My Account section, click Financial Aid Status.
  3. Log in to self-service using your Ohio State Username (lastname.#) and password.
  4. Click on the appropriate aid year, then select the To Do Items tab for the list of the required documents and due dates.

Just wondering if this means I've been accepted to the program?? I don't wanna speak too soon but I mean don't schools only ask people about financial aid stuff AFTER they've admitted them? Fingers crossed!! 🙂

When did you submit SOPHAS for Yale? My timeline was 11/26- submitted, 1/16- accepted. Give them a call if it has been a while.

I hope so! But I actually interviewed with them on the 14th and received a phone call the following Monday that I got in. It may have been because I emailed them asking when will they let me know which may have expedited the decision process for me. Otherwise I was told 1-2 weeks from when you interviewed. How was your interview?

Also, I havent even looked at any financial aid stuff...I should probably get on that soon...

As far as the email goes, that does look like a good sign...maybe reach out to Lisa about when you should hear back

thanks bahmed! the interview was great...im optimistic about the results 🙂 Anyone had an experience so far during their application process where a school emailed you regarding financial aid and you later got accepted to the school? I'm really trying to feel out whether or not OSU sending me financial aid info prior to sending me a decision means that they've already accepted me (like, why would they be asking about financial aid right now...shouldn't they worry about that after they've admitted me since it is the final step in the application process? I mean, you wouldn't give a scholarship to someone who was rejected, right? so why bother with sending me anything regarding financial aid...my understanding is that the financial aid stuff comes later on, usually in snail mail, only AFTER you have received your decision via email etc)

I suppose I am just being impatient haha it's my first choice so am very keen to hear back. Yeah, I emailed admissions on updating my application and asked a few questions and they replied that some people may even hear back after March. I assumed I would have heard back by now, acceptance or rejection, as I was in the first batch to be interviewed. When did they interview you?

Congrats on the acceptance! Is it your first choice? I submitted 1/14 which is quite late, so I suppose it's pretty normal to not have heard back yet. Although, I did read somewhere that there were interviews, so I was under the impression that they would have scheduled one for now if I were to have one, especially because the Columbia ones were arranged so quickly. I'm assuming that you didn't have an interview? I will probably call up if I haven't heard back by end of march.

Oh okay, good to know! Yeah I would very much like to hear back as well...I was interviewed the first week of Feb! And you?

how big is Columbia's MHA cohort? anyone know?

I've been leaning UNC since day 1, but not ready to commit just yet, especially look for housing! But get back to me in April haha.

@W1818 Yale doesn't do interviews. Based on what my friend said of her peers at YSPH, they do a small batch of acceptances late Dec/early January and then a larger one late Feb/early March. Sit tight, you'll probably hear soon!

Yup I was interviewed around that time as well. I guess we'll just have to wait and see! Good luck, I hope you get a favorable result!

Good to know it'll be coming soon at least, thanks for the info!

I'm really excited about UNC, but not interviewing until March, which has me worried I'm less likely to get in.

I really have no idea how this works, but I would assume that less people are invited to interview as the class fills up. I doubt they're still sending out batches of 20+ invites this late in the cycle. That's just a gut feeling that may have no basis in reality.

hey just got an email from UNC inviting me for an on campus interview around mid march? anyone else got a similar email?

It is later in the cycle but getting an interview is absolutely a good sign at UNC. I asked Bruce Fried a handful of questions at my interview regarding what they look for in a student, what they like their cohort to look like etc, and he said the basically only pass on a student if they feel like something salient during the interview indicates they wouldn't be able to get him/her a job upon graduation. That said, I'm not sure if they waitlist people who interview or waitlist from those they don't. Either way, I think you're in a better position than if you weren't offered an interview.

To build off of this, I had a very strange interview @ UNC (just couldn't connect with the interviewer at all, huge mismatch in terms of personality) and I thought it went horribly, but I was accepted.
