Hey everyone,
I've been doing a lot of research into the DO schools I could see myself at and one school that has really impressed me is MSUCOM. At this point in time, MSUCOM is my first choice, MD or DO for medical school. I love the campus and the big ten vibe. Plus a solid sports team in almost every team 😉 Plus they seem to have strong research opportunities.
I was wondering, as an out of state applicant, how realistic is it to garner an acceptance with average scores for DO schools?
Do Michigan students get preference since it is a state supported school, or do they only get tuition breaks? If they do favor in state students, how could I make myself more competitive to the program? Would getting a letter of rec from an alumi of the DO school help at all to set me apart? I have recently come into contact with a physician who graduated from MSUCOM. Would it be a good idea to talk to admissions?
I know that OOS tuition is insanely steep, however I have been very impressed with the match rate for graduates, and it seems like a majority of specialty osteopathic residencies are in Michigan. I wouldnt mind going in 300k worth of debt if it gives me the best chance of success for matching in a branch of medicine that I want. Would it be a better idea to try and get a job in Michigan and then apply?
Or is it not even worth it? Should I focus my time and energy elsewhere?
Thank you for all of the advice!
