Michigan State Question

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
A little tid bit for all those, like myself, frantically waiting around. Donna Grooms emailed today about something to do with prereq courses and I slipped in a question about when to expect to hear back. Her response was sometime in February given I was "in one of the last VMCAS mailings." I submitted the week of the deadline, so if you were close to that time frame you'll most likely be in the same boat.

I'll second this. I emailed admissions several days ago out of curiosity about a projected timeline. Pat Peterson said that we should hear by Feb 1st or before.

Thanks for the info! (despite being sad for the longer wait) I guess I will stop obsessively checking my mailbox.

Ah well... got my rejection letter. Good luck to everyone else still in the running, wish you luck!

I was one of the last groups to get their applications reviewed and I just got my letter today 🙂 so keep your eyes peeled, they should be going out soon!

Congrats and thanks for the update, elkk! Good to know my mailman-stalking might be productive soon 🙂

I got my letter today too! It was in a big envelope if anyone was wondering

i submitted my VMCAS app around the end of august, and i'm still waiting to hear from msu. i emailed them last week just to see where they were at, and they replied that their decision should be "made and mailed" by the end of february!

so i guess i got lumped in with some of the last people, but i hope that still means i'm in the running!

I was told the same thing about mine and I literally submitted my VMCAS on the last day. Also, keep in mind that while I received my letter on the 21st, the letterhead is dated for the 7th. You might be in and just not know it yet. 😛

I'm just curious as to how many people are still waiting to hear from MSU. I haven't heard anything yet and to be frank I am getting a little worried.

Sunnyshine......

you're not alone, unfortunately 😕

I also have not head a Peep......the same goes for a few people i know.

Also, I'm IS Soooooo.....BUT the good news (i guess) is since alot of us haven't heard ......they're most likely just taking their sweet time.

I'll bet $ that more of us will hear from them in the next few weeks as interviews are finishing up!

-shine on....:luck:

same here, haven't heard anything yet...which is good I guess, but the anticipation is killing me. I check my mail way too much😳

Thanks for the help HotTamale & farmgirl12, it's nice to know I am not alone. I guess we all have to be patient for a just a little longer.

All the vets at the clinic that I work at went to MSU (I'm IS), and every day I come in they all ask "Have you heard anything yet?" I am literally getting ulcers waiting to hear from them..... Hopefully soon!

This is my IS and my second time applying (I was waitlisted the first time) and I think the only school I have a chance to get into. I'm going crazy with waiting! Really hoping next week we all get some think envelopes in the mail.

Just wanted to let you guys know (for those still waiting):

I called the admissions office today and found out that all letters (acceptance, alternate, rejection) have been sent this morning... so we'll definitely hear back from them by end of this week!!!!!!!!

Good luck, everyone!!!!!!!

Ahhh! The obsession with checking my mailbox will begin again!

Thanks for calling and getting the info!

Ahhh! I can't believe we're finally going to hear from them, so nervous:scared: and excited:laugh:. Good-luck everyone!!!:xf::luck:

Got my letter this morning. I'm on the alternate list. Now just crossing my fingers and hoping for the best. Any idea on my chances of getting called off the waitlist? I'm OOS.

I think it depends. Last year, a lot of applicants were placed on the waitlist and ranks were not given (Someone please correct me if I'm wrong!). I know MSU over accepts OOS students- the Assistant Dean of Admissions gave a presentation at the prevet club meeting stating that they accept about 200 applicants for ~100 spots (IS and OOS), assuming that quite a few OOS students will turn down offers and go elsewhere.
Good luck!!!:xf:

i know that probably at LEAST half (closer to 3/4, even) of the 40 OOS students in our class came off of the waitlist. so there is hope!

That's more promising than I thought. Hopefully I'm ranked pretty high on the list. Fingers crossed!

I'm an alternate too! The letter came to my house (I live in a dorm at school) and my mom called to say a small envelope was in the mail...boy was I pleasantly surprised! 🙂

This is probably common knowledge at this point in the game, but does MSU let you gain residency for tuition purposes after the first year like OSU? I'm assuming no, but worth asking! 🙂

So just out of curiosity, where do the majority of vet students usually live? Are there a lot of apartments available or any on-campus housing?

Negative. In MI OOS stays OOS, unless you can find someone to marry who is a resident.

in terms of living, there *is* on campus housing (dorms) for grad students, but i don't recommend living there. most vet students live in various apartment complexes around east lansing/haslett/okemos

Is anyone else still waiting for their letter? MSU is my in-state (although I'm on the west coast currently, damn slow mail!), this is my second time applying, and I've been rejected from everywhere else--I'm going crazy waiting!

Waitlisted! I can't believe it! I totally thought I was going to be rejected straight up. 😀

Alternate -- IS. (and rejected everywhere else I applied this year.)

I applied for the class of 2013, was put on the alternate list, and for the past 2 years I've been getting an MS at a competitive school, have retaken some of my science classes that I didn't do well on in undergrad (went from a C- to an A in biochem). I can't believe that I've worked so hard just to be put in the exact same place I was 2 years ago. I'm really upset... 🙁

I know IS waitlists don't move much, anyone have any idea how far MSU goes through their list?

Got my letter today and I am also an alternate. I am a little disappointed, but I am still very grateful to be an alternate for such a great school. Now I am curious as to how many people on the OOS alternate list usually get in.

There are 3-4 in-state waitlisters from our class who ended up getting in.

Out of state, I'd say at least 20/40 of the OOS people in our class were on the waiting list. I have no idea how far they got through on the list to get those 20 people, though, because they don't release rankings

Alternate as well. So if I email asking about rank, they won't tell me anything?

Anyone else going to the vet-a-visit on the 19th? I would really like to get a feel for what the school is like and I'm thinking this is probably my best opportunity...it also happens to fall over my spring break 😀

I'm planning on going to Vet-a-Visit too. I was bummed when they didn't have an interview since that's when you do the tour and stuff, so I'm hoping this will kind of be like that and that we'll be able to have some questions answered.

I got waitlisted at MSU (OOS) and it is my top choice so I'm really on pins and needles waiting around for April 15th to get here. I called the admissions office yesterday to try and get some more information. They wouldn't release rankings, but they did say there is one waitlist for instate and out of state. I've got my fingers crossed that the waitlist starts to move soon! (It's been a reallllllly long road to get here....)

Declined my acceptance...hope this is good news for someone. :hardy:

For those who have never been to vet-a-visit before, it is a lot of fun! There are no official tours, so you are free to wander about. There are exhibits throughout the vet school, in the oncology building, and in the McPhail building (horse research/clinic next to the vet school). There are plenty of student volunteers to help you find what you are looking for - just look for the people in the orange and red shirts.

I highly recommend the student panels if you have questions about what life is like for vet students at Michigan State. They are at noon and 2pm (I think) in our big lecture hall. There'll be 1st and 2nd year students to talk about life in classes. There should be representatives from my class (3rd year) and the 4th year class to talk about life in clinics. Most of the volunteers in orange and red shirts are vet students so they are good people to ask as well, especially if you can't get your questions answered at the student panels. 🙂

Hi everyone, I'm also on the alternate list for MSU (IS) and called today to try and get some more information. They will not release rankings, but there are two different waitlists (one for IS and another for OOS). The person I talked to did say that there are 87 people on the IS list and that they'll start calling people off the lists from May through the week before orientation in August. Just thought others might want to know! 🙂

For the IS waitlisters--I spoke to someone in admissions today and she said that it's different every year, but that last year they took 6 people off of the IS waitlist. She recommended that I email [email protected] and request my profile, which then allows me to schedule a file review.

Good thinking!! I was also placed on the alternate list at MSU! Gahh, so frustrating, but not the worst thing that could happen! I have a meeting with Dr. Baptista, the Assistant Dean of Admissions, on March 16th to discuss my status on the alternate list, so I'm hoping they might be able to tell me something more specific to me at the meeting. Having my applicant profile with me at the meeting will also help me so I can come in prepared.

Popping in to say that Dr. Baptista is awesome! Very easy to talk to and very welcoming. Good luck guys!

For the OOS-ers: I just declined my acceptance! Love the school, but OOS tuition is just too expensive for me. Good luck to everyone on the alternate lists!
