My interview is next week, but it seems like a lot of people have already been accepted! Does anyone know the ratio for interviews granted:accepted...aka how likely will you get in if granted an interview?? Getting nervous because I really want to attend MWU!!

I think they said last year they interviewed around 300 people for a class of 100

LlamaVet's numbers are correct for this year as well. They received over 800 applications, chose 300 to interview, and will select 100 for the upcoming class. They also said not to worry about how many have already interviewed and been accepted, that it should not affect your chances. I'm not sure what that means, though.

Yes, but MANY more were offered admission and didn't accept it. I'd bet MWU offered admissions to about 200 people to end up with a class of 100. All vet schools offer acceptance letters to more people than end up in the class, but the number of acceptances offered is probably higher for new/very expensive schools.
 
When I was there, they said that they interviewed 300 and accept around 150. They expect that about 50 will not attend and the class will be around 100 students!
 
Does anyone know how many people are accepted from each interview group?? I see how many people they hope to accept, but as far as ranking in each group

They said it really depended, that they could in theory accept everyone from an interview group. I know our group was large, so I'm not sure.


Has anyone been braver than me and asked when the next time the committee meets?

Everyone keeps asking "what would you do if you win the lottery" and I'm like... Pay for school and buy a hybrid car. Lol
 
Where does it say whether you are accepted or not? I'm trying to figure out whether my portal changed and am psyching myself out. lol

Thank you. I saw the checklist this afternoon after a few people posted they got in. But, I kept telling myself that it must have been there all the time and didn't mean anything. And then I started telling myself that maybe it was for wait-listed students, too. And now, I'm still thinking there's got to be a loop hole. Because, you know, I can't believe I actually got in.

That's how I felt too... I saw the portal change in class and it took every ounce of my being not to leave class to call them to make sure it wasn't some kind of mistake.... But we are really in!

While it is close to home, I am pretty hesitant to attend here. The cost of living in Los Angeles is ridiculous, especially in comparison to the cost of living in Arizona. I just got back from Arizona and a 800 sq foot apartment will run about $800-$900 whereas as 300 sq foot apartment in the LA area will run $1500, no utilities included. Considering tuition is already through the roof, the cost of rent can add a substantial amount of money to your already looming debt. While I think there are upsides to being sent out in the community for your rotations, I am afraid this will actually hinder my learning as I will be exposed to the same routine problems. Its great to be an expert at the everyday issues that you'll see frequently in GP but I also want to be exposed to the grander issues like TPLOs and cataract surgery (the things that would generally be referred to a larger animal hospital such as Midwestern or UC Davis). However, MWU animal hospital isn't fully functioning yet since its current students have not hit clinical rotations yet so, like any other business, there may be hiccups along the way. On the flip side, I really like Western's approach to teaching. At MWU, all 100 of your peers are in the same class at the same time and I am worried about being a small fish in a big pond. I do like the PBL approach that Western has and the small cohorts you're in. I also like the "lunch and dinner talks" that Western provides to its students so you're learning outside the classroom in a more relaxed setting. I am SO confused as to where I am going to go! And anyone chime in on this if you have a different thought process.

I hope I can help with this! I am currently a second year student at Midwestern (I'm also a student ambassador and have probably met some of you at your interviews) and was accepted to both Western and Midwestern and had to make the same decision. My biggest pro for western was that I only lived 30 minutes away and wouldn't have to move. I was kind of excited about the PBL approach, but also super nervous. When I interviewed at Midwestern there were no students or facilities to judge the school by. What I did have though was a super passionate dean and faculty to show me their vision. I personally was excited to be a leader by starting clubs and helping make a great name for Midwestern University. I am so happy I made the decision to attend Midwestern and I can tell you why! Our passionate faculty is still so passionate and driven to help us in any way possible. They help us start clubs, projects and are true mentors. Our teaching hospital is fully functioning-we are lacking some specialists like neurology and radiology- but we are booked out for months with appointments and perform specialty surgeries almost every day. I personally have shadowed numerous appointments and surgeries there over school breaks. We have a sophomore surgery course where I have already performed four live animal surgeries (I spayed a dog yesterday!). The surgery course really makes me feel like I am a future vet. I have a patient that I am 100% responsible for! We also have a mobile unit that goes out and performs free physical exams and surgeries almost every weekend for pets in need. First year students can go on the mobile unit and perform these surgeries- first years! And for the 100 students per class, don't worry it's still very interactive. The professors want you to ask questions and they get the class to participate. Also for more important topics we are usually broken into small groups and have lots of workshops. Like today I'm about to head over to our equine facility with a group of 15 students to go learn about the importance of therapy horses. Midwestern now works with the horse rhythm foundation and our facilities will be used for therapy use. I can go on and on about the amazing things going on here at Midwestern. I haven't accepted my offer because I am still waiting to hear from 7 schools! I'm sure the waiting game is killing you, but hang in there!

A lot of people don't get in their first time! Don't give up on it if it's what's you really want

Hey, now, don't give up! 🙁 The fact that you were invited to interview at even one veterinary school proves that it isn't hopeless! It's not over 'til it's over. I haven't definitively gotten accepted anywhere, either (I'm an alternate at MWU, currently), so you're not alone.

If you wind up not getting in this year... seriously, don't feel bad. As @kaf213 mentioned, there are still definitely a lot of people who would make fantastic veterinarians not getting in on the first go-around. That's okay! Just see if you can identify any weak points in your application and aim to improve them for next time. Perhaps we can help you with that, if you don't mind sharing your stats. 🙂

We did get to see the action! It made me so excited. I loved the whole hospital! How do you like the school?
 
Random question- Does anyone know if you are allowed dyed hair at MWU? I want to go back to my 'natural' blue if I can but I don't want to bleach it back out only to have to dye it a different color in August.

Im not too sure. We do have a dress code- business casual. With that being said I have a classmate with bright red hair and numerous people have purple or blue coloring in their hair. Midwestern University does have a handbook somewhere online that might have more information.

Yeah, I couldn't find it. I'll email them when my hair grows out a little bit more. Blue's totally natural, right? :whistle:

I love it! Of course it's super challenging but I love that in our second year we are already in the clinic. Knowing that I get to meet my surgical patient every Wednesday really keeps me motivated. I love the program and the faculty. I am very happy I made the decision to attend Midwestern. Let me know if you have any questions!

I'm glad you like it! Curious, how much help do they offer on classes? Of course I know it will be challenging but do they have tutors? Are the professors helpful when you ask for help outside of class hours? Study groups? I heard something about a big/little program as well. Are you involved in that and do you think it's helped your "little sibling"?

Hey Penelope, if its not too much to ask, what's a typical day for you at Midwestern? Awake schedule, sleep, studying, extra activities/clubs, etc. I'm trying to get myself into a schedule that reflects the life of a vet student so it doesn't hit me too hard (impossible I know, but I can try). Also any advice for incoming first years is much appreciated!

Now that there is more than one class we have tutors! (There weren't any for our class- no one to tutor us lol). The professors are very helpful and overall Midwestern University has a great open door policy. The professors are encouraging and want us to go to them or email them with any questions. And yes we do have a big sib/little sib program. I love my little sib and I like to think that I've helped her. I've given her study tips, advice on running for class council, and how to prepare for an exam. I've made sure to be there for her if she has any questions- so take advantage of having a big sib and make sure when you have questions that you ask! I hope this information was helpful!
