Midwestern University C/O 2019 Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Muffin, that letter means you are on the "waitlist". It's confusing but important to know that MWU distinguishes between waitlist and alternate unlike most schools. "Waitlist" means on the waitlist for an interview and "alternate" is an interviewed applicant on the waitlist for a seat in the class. Confusing right? According to last year's thread, waitlist interviews were done late spring and I don't remember if any of those converted straight to acceptances. You could read through that thread if interested.
Fly Racing thank you. I will def check out that thread, I'm a 2nd time around, just want to go to vetschool like everyone else, it is confusing, I was like not rejected but not forgotten about?? . thank you for responding to my post, hopefully something good will happen this time

Good Luck Muffinhead. I have also heard so many great things about how wonderful and friendly the staff is that if I were in your shoes, I might call and find out what has to happen in order for you to get your interview. Just a thought. I'm sure they would totally understand getting that type of question by the letter you were sent.

Thank you vet4life 🙂 maybe I should Email them I just don't want to seem annoying... I'm scared : D it was funny I was laying on the couch and my mother came in and said you got something from Midwestern, I was guilty of lurking around here, and figured since I didn't hear anything or get an interview I was 100% rejected. I said matter of factly.."oh it's just my rejection letter, and almost threw it away. :/ but decided to open it and saw that it was 25% positive. I guess we will see I'm still hunting for the thread of people who were in my shoes and what happened. everyone here is so nice thank you everyone and I wish you all success!!

I'm just here to say that I just wanted to call you Muffinhead because it sounds delightful in my brain. Good luck, Muffinhead! The school is really awesome and I hope they come through with good news for you!!

Thank you dirtanddog!! Your super sweet! ☺️ good luck to you with everything

Has anyone been accepted yet from the 10/31 interviews?

Also, do prereqs have to be COMPLETED at the time of application? Or do we have until spring to complete them?

I'm pretty sure you can finish completing them in the Spring...I think almost all vet schools are cool with that. But in some cases, they may want to know your grades in prereqs...I did TERRIBLE at my first undergrad attempt and when I retook classes/took new classes, I tried to make sure they saw all my shiny A's prior to applying, just so I can say... "hey, I used to be a dumbsh*t but look - I fixed me"

@Fly Racing, did MWU have a recommendation on a tablet or computer for school? Was there anything "required" prior to start of class?

They sent out a book and supply list in June. Basically what we've needed first quarter is books plus stethoscope, penlight, and specific color of scrubs for anatomy/surgery/live animal labs (ours are navy, but if they do the same as the other programs, each year gets a different color so we can be identified. Your color stays with your class rather than buying new scrubs each year.). Other stuff on the list will be used in future quarters including coveralls (in your class color), muck boots, reflex hammer and probably other things I'm forgetting. Our white coats, and rabies vax were provided by the school. There are no recommended technology items, except a turningpoint clicker. I imagine everyone has a laptop or tablet, but the school has enough computers, that if you like spending time in libraries and computer labs, you could get by without your own.

The only annoying this is since we are on a campus with a "human teaching hospital" (play off of 'veterinary teaching hospital'), we are also required to have titers drawn to determine immunity on the things we received childhood vaccinations for. But you have until the end of first year to do it.

Are the people who draw our blood in the human teaching hospital med students or "grownups" ? lol

Grown-ups 😀 They also have a contract with a local lab if you want to go off campus. I saw one of the surgeons for a post op appointment and was surprised there wasn't a student in sight. I was told that was normal because of the student to doctor ratio. Who knew?

Thank you for the info. I was worried about the Rabies shots because I couldn't find a place near me. And I heard when you do find a place to do them they cost like $750.00. All over the boards people say " Don't buy the books" but I can't see not using them. I did read that other schools also have titers drawn and make you get a booster if needed. They even draw them at the conventions. Thanks for taking the time to reply to all of us btw. Your info has helped us all!!

Have you guys heard anything on whether or not they hold your spot until the April 15 deadline? Is that just a given? I emailed admissions, but am still waiting for an answer. I heard last year that Lincoln Memorial (the other new school) did rolling interviews/admissions like Midwestern but they didn't hold students' spot until April 15.

Every school that uses VMCAS needs to adhere to the April 15th rule. If you hear differently, report to AAVMC 🙂

I heard the same thing about not buying books when I started. I did go ahead and get most of them for the first quarter. As for me during the first quarter... I definitely used my Anatomy books. Used the Physiology book a few times. Didn't open the Biochem book all quarter.

I interviewed on 10/31 as well but did not get accepted. I will be emailing admissions to see if there is an alternate list.

I haven't heard anything from them 🙁 Didn't get verified until 10/21, but hearing good news/bad news are nerve wrecking.......

Got a snail letter stating that my application was placed on hold for an interview. Glad I I have an update.

Good luck to everyone.🙂

All over the boards people say " Don't buy the books" but I can't see not using them.

That is because outside of maybe 1 or 2 books, you really, really will NOT use them. Notes are your number one source for information, books are really just an additional resource if needed and with how things are now, there isn't anything that is in a book that you can't find online for free. The reason people all over the board say "don't buy the books" is because we know that you really won't touch them (outside of anatomy really). I have purchased 3 books: Anatomy, small animal surgery and radiology. I used anatomy a little bit, still not a whole lot. I have referenced maybe 3 things in small animal surgery and I haven't even touched radiology really. I am in my third year of vet school currently and as you can see I have not really used or purchased many books at all.

Did the interview end around 230pm as stated in the interview invitation email? Probably too late to ask, but I am cutting my flight home a little close. I don't think the school can dock me for leaving around the stated end time, but as I am finalizing transportation for Nov 12th, my nerves are kicking in!

Hey! Interview process was all done for us I think between 2 and 2:30, pretty well-timed.

I interview December 8th and it will be my first--super nervous! But I've heard such good (and relaxing) things that I think I will be fine!

I was super nervous beforehand too, but the interviewers and everyone were super nice - you'll be fine. 🙂

Just booked my flight, car and room for 12/10! I'm excited and nervous. I used air bnb for my room and I'll be staying with a MWU dental student for $45/night. There were cheaper rooms, but she's so close to the school and offered to drive me to the interview. 🙂 Now I just need to find something to wear and make sure I have some good questions!

Hey yall! I have an interview on December 10th! I am excited to meet everyone there on that day. Best of luck to everyone who has received an invitation to interview.

Hi I just created an account on here. I am a second time applicant and I applied to quite a few schools this time around.

I too got one of the letters in the mail saying my application is on hold for an interview. Does anyone know what the chances of being called off this list for an interview is? I couldn't find any information on the thread from last year.

Also have they sent out any rejection letters? Or instead of rejecting anyone right away they are sending out these hold letters.

Those who are accepted - do you remember around what time did you see the accepted student checklist on portal?

My interviewers said I should see the checklist on Monday if I am accepted... I am checking obsessively and growing hopeless 🙁 I loved the school and really wanted to get accepted...

I think it appeared around 7-8pm eastern time.

I interview on 12/10 and get butterflies just thinking about it. I have an interview at Western University on 12/5 asl well so I think i'm just hanging around out west for a week until both interviews are done. Trying to finalize travel plans and hotels. Any suggestions on places to stay and things to do in LA and Phoenix? I'm from Georgia and have never been past alabama lol!

Get some real Mexican food... 😉

I'm flying in 12/7 and leaving 12/9. I'm thinking of using lyft to get from the airport and then shuttle to the school from one of the recommended hotels. Drury inn offers shuttles and some free food/popcorn (and I'm poor after this plane ticket ha).
