MPH 2019: Applied, Waitlisted, Accepted!

Hi everyone, as we all are starting to hear back about admissions and financial aid packages, for those who pretty much only applied for schools with huge price tags, how are people navigating questions of whether to defer for a year and work + prepare for bigger scholarships that they maybe only recently found out about versus committing to the cost and just spending time preparing to compete for a higher paying job post graduation? Added to that the caveat that a lot of one year positions that I, at least, could think of that are tangentially related to public health are more entry level so it's not certain how much I'd be able to save + very uncertain of earning much extra from scholarships just due to high volume of competition? Or are people considering the third option of waiting a cycle to apply for more cost effective programs?

I'm stressing out a bit over this, and I know each person will arrive at a different answer, but just hoping for guidance for what people are considering along the way 🙂

I feel like I might look for whatever scholarship is still open/available. In my case, taking an additional year/deferring will not help my professional ambitions. All the best with whatever you choose to do.

Which course did u applied to in Harvard? Heard anything from the financial aid?

WOW. What language will you be studying? Pretty hard to turn up that offer!

I'd be studying Swahili! I also applied for the same fellowship at UNC and am waiting to hear back. I think getting that one would be the only thing that would potentially sway me away from this offer.

Yeah, I am wondering the same thing. I looked at the TA/RA part, and it said that initially these are given out by need, and the rest of us have to find a professor when we are there who is willing to sponsor us for a TA/RA job.

Hmmm I wonder how many are given out by need and their threshold to qualify for that. I should file an appeal on my FAFSA with the school as my financial situation is different as of last July, though I don't know if it's too recent for them to really consider it. Worth a shot, though.

Congrats to the admits this morning! I was waitlisted at Yale for the Advanced Professional MPH today and accepted at Duke yesterday, which was for a masters in public policy.
That's all she wrote, but I have yet to receive one financial aid package.

I haven't submitted the application yet. Emailed Emory but I doubt I'm going to get a response soon... Last time, they were very slow at replying to my email. I'm just going to submit it by the end of this week while waiting for other schools' offers.

You're definitely not alone!! I'm also extremely worried as I have a pretty significant amount of loans from undergrad and have yet to receive any financial aid offers. I know it's tough to see a lot of people on here getting huge amounts of scholarships/fellowships etc but there are definitely a lot of us who have received nothing or next to it. I think the job prospects can be tricky but if you are passionate enough and are willing to relocate I believe there are careers out there!

I think people saying a degree wont get you a job is a very defeatist way of looking at things. Education in public health is very valuable. No degree is a golden parachute, a person still needs to demonstrate that they have certain skills so I think talking to some people like faculty, alumni of schools to learn what outcomes alumni of the program have had might help. We have to realize some people don't take full advantage of their education, not taking initiative to network, gain work experience and build solid skills they might end up feeling like it was a waste.

I just submitted the app. They said that they will start reviewing apps mid to late March so it seems like you have some time. However, they said the awards are partially based on availability so it might be better to submit the app sooner than later.

I don't know if I'm as worried about not finding a job, jobs are out there. But I am highly nervous about taking on the debt given the expected salary range both short and long term. I've only been accepted to schools with some pretty high price tags, and I don't know if I can justify the cost. I'm pretty upset about it, not going to grad would feel like throwing away a dream I've been working towards for years.

I think tough choices are in our future, but I'm sure we'll come out of it ok.

Thank you to everyone for the support and reassurance. I don’t believe there is no job for an MPH graduate and I’m incredibly passionate about the field, which is why I’m willing to take out loans for it.

I guess I just don’t have as strong of a support system as some people, and receive very conflicting advice sometimes. I was unsure if I should wait a year to save up, even though I’m eager to start grad school. I’m just not sure that one year would really make that much of a difference financially.

Got the SPH Block Grant Fellowship from Berkeley! Covers about half tuition at $12,500/year (really a little less, since it's a taxable stipend). I'm from the Bay Area, and my family and tons of my friends live there, so that makes Cal super affordable and a really easy, stress-less move. Also an easier transition for my (BIG) dog, who I'd hate to coop up in a teeny NYC/Boston apartment.

Still dying to hear about Harvard financial aid. With $ offers from Columbia and Cal, which have lower (and much lower) base tuition rates to begin with, it would take a lot to justify Harvard, and from what I heard they're far, far less likely to offer scholarship money.

I'm in the same position in regards to adding debt to my undergrad loans and being worried about the job and salary prospects post-grad. It's stressful thinking about it but I'm definitely going to do my best and, unlike undergrad, try to have a more well rounded balance between academics, work/volunteer activities, as well as a social life...and definitely sleep! 😛

It might be challenging but we got this! 😀
