MPH 2020: Applied, Accepted, Rejected, Waitlisted

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
How can you tell you got money? If I got an update email but no email that mentions an award amount can I just assume they didn't offer me any money? (My "budget" on the financial aid site lists my need at $65,000 after a $4,100 student contribution.)
it says it in the email separated as loans or need. if you only got loans then you werent awarded anything.

Same.. when did you apply?
It's in my signature: I submitted via SOPHAS on 12/1 and Columbia sent me an email marking it complete on 12/3. I got a follow up email on 2/1 asking me to complete the supplemental questions (optional) on their portal which I never noticed...I completed it on 2/2 or 2/3 and have been waiting since.

Oh sorry I couldn’t see your signature from my phone

I wouldn't be worried about lack of research experience. MPH is a professional degree - the expectation is you're coming in to advance your career in your field. You have a lot of relevant experience. Emphasize that - esp. your VISTA position. Focus less on the less important stuff. (College service positions are fine to put in SOPHAS and on your resume, but admissions committees for MPH programs are more interested in professional experience. Stuff like your 2-week trip to Cambodia is also ~fine~ to list, but if you're going to talk about it, only do so in the context of a great story or a moment of learning - not as a vital component of your background). Be specific about what you learned from these positions that made you want to pursue an MPH. Talk about what skills you've gained that you want to refine and what skills you don't have yet that the MPH can give you.

You have very very clear interests as well, that's a strength. Most people come into these programs saying they want to study nutrition or global health. You're already thinking about ACEs and sequelae of SUD. Talk about these in your personal statement.

Don't be afraid to tailor, too. E.g., NC is a state trying to pass Medicaid expansion - it's worth mentioning this in your UNC app to show you've done your homework.

Just curious, any reason you're applying to MCH at UNC and HPM everywhere else?

Sorry for my very delayed response - but I just wanted to say thanks for your guidance! I have been accepted to George Mason, Colorado, BU, and Emory and am still waiting to hear back from Columbia, GWU, and UNC. I decided to apply predominantly to HPM concentrations so that I could learn the tangible policy analysis skills while learning MCH concepts through electives, certificates, etc. I spoke with a few really great MCH professors at UNC that are working on projects related to my interests, so that's why I went with MCH at UNC.

Where did you see that UCLA's program is more admin focused? I've been trying to figure that out...

Hi there! Lurker who made an account to continue this conversation. Speaking to current students gave me this impression as well. Feel free to PM for more information.

Long time lurker first time poster. I have a question for someone who might be in a similar situation. I was recently accepted into Columbia's Sociomedical Sciences program. After a lot of thinking during these last few weeks, I realized I now want to pursue epidemiology. Does anyone have experience switching their program/emphasis? Let me know your thoughts. I don't even know if it's something that's possible. I think I remember reading someone's post that they switched but I'm not sure if it's something simple to do.

A few quick questions for fellow Hopkins MSPH/MPH admitted students:
Are you planning on going to the admitted students day on 3/13?
Are there any fellow Health Systems/International Health peeps?
And is there an admitted students group page for MSPH? (I only found the MPH one, is this the only one there is)

Congrats on all the acceptances everyone!

Waiting for Columbia accelerated mph, HSPH mph 45, UC Berkeley Interdisciplinary. Haven't received any news whatsoever in the past 2 weeks. Getting nervous.
Hi Bleedingblue94, can I DM you? We are waiting to hear from the same program at Berkeley.

i will be there on 3/13 for students day.

Maybe a dumb question, but does anyone know how a practicum (specifically at Columbia) works tuition wise? Like is it typically x amount of credits that I'm paying for, or since it's during the summer it's like adding on a semester's worth of tuition, or am I not paying any extra to be doing it since it's like an internship? I tried looking it up on their website and couldn't find much info on it.

This morning columbia offered me 5k in need based aid... and tonight Emory offered me 75% tuition and 2.5k REAL + 2k practice experience award! What a WILD day!!
Heard the same from Emory for scholarships today! Still waiting on Columbia financial aid, but had a similarly tiny package from UTHealth which was surprising considering I had previous work experience with the school ‍♀️

I was admitted to the MSPH Int Health/Health Systems program as well! I'm not 100% I'm going there, but it's definitely a finalist (still waiting on aid). If you can find an admitted students page for MSPH could you share? What are you looking to focus on? Maybe DM me.

Did you get an email with your aid package from Emory or was it on your portal?

Yes, I’m still waiting as well! I applied to their health communication and promotion track and submitted my application Jan 8.

What program did you get into for Berkeley?

Is anyone waiting to hear back from Berkeley's Maternal, Child, and Adolescent Health Program? I live in Berkeley so I'm hoping to stay in the area but I did get into Columbia on 2/04 for Population and Family Health. I applied to these two and SFSU but between Columbia and SFSU I definitely think I should go the Columbia route.

Hi everyone! Long time lurker here 🙂 So far, I've gotten into Tulane and BU, both for Health Policy. I've read some unflattering things on here about BU - but what are people's thoughts on Tulane?

Does anyone know class size / average age stats for either program?

At Columbia you pay a flat tuition rate regardless of the number of credits taken (as a full-time student, which I believe is 12 credits min per semester). Your practicum does not count towards any extra credits (at least it doesn't for epi), but it is a graduation requirement. You have to complete a certain number of hours (depends on your concentration) and most students complete these over the summer, but I knew people who did their practicums in spring of year 1 or fall of year 2. I remember in Epi we also received a small stipend from the school to help with living costs during practicum, which varied in $$ depending on if your practicum was local, out of state, or international. Hope that helped clarify things a bit.

Hi everyone, congrats on all of your acceptances! Has anyone heard about financial aid for the MPH program at Hopkins? And is anyone else still waiting to hear about financial aid for the accelerated MPH at Columbia? I received the "See what's new in your portal" email from Columbia but there was nothing new.

I emailed Hopkins about financial aid, and they told me it can still take some time to hear back from them.
For Columbia, I’ve also been accepted for te accelerated MPH, received the same email but nothing has changed in my portal. Not really sure what to think of all that. But not havin g high hopes for funding at Columbia...
