MPH Fall 2015: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I hadn't heard that they would be posting it to their YouTube channel. Good to know. Hopefully they do the same with the financial aid one that they are having tomorrow.

It will be. I think by the middle of next week. I think I've decided to stop checking OPUS until you've heard back. You applied a full month before me, and frankly I just can't keep looking. In my head I keep thinking what it will be like to be at the various schools. Emory is weird, because I lived in Atlanta/Decatur for 4 years and I know it well. It's like going home. Then, to ruin this daydreaming exercise, my mom called me this morning and said, "You know, if you get in to Harvard, it'll be like Elle Woods and Bruiser with you and Lucy, but with brown hair and fatter." Thanks, ma. I wonder, should I have ended my SOP with that? I'm sure on Friday she'll call and remind me that, on her 29th birthday, she had three children under 4. Jewish mothers, oy.

I find the atmosphere great, lots of different things happening, interesting professors and guest speakers. Beautiful facilities. International. BTW I listened to the "You've applied now what" webinar last night. Nothing earth shattering but some useful information. Sounds like Visit Emory will be very interesting even if you are familiar with the school.
I was on there too. I'm excited for Visit Emory, will you be there? Let's try to meet up. I will be the one with the crow's feet. 🙂 I'm getting a little stressed about finding a rental house. I don't really want to live in Campus Crossing and I have a huge dog!

I want you to get into Emory just because you make me laugh so much. Your mom sounds like me talking to my daughter so not just Jewish moms. I've got my fingers crossed for you!

Hahahaha, I have a Jewish dad. Complete with occasional Brooklyn accent. Luckily he was late 30s when I was born. 🙂 Unluckily, I am an only child and probably will need to have kids or something.

Checking OPUS has started to become so discouraging. Based on what others have posted, I'm not even sure that GLEPI people will hear back for another couple of weeks.

Do you have the link to where these are posted or their webinar schedule?

I'm guessing the videos will be posted here: https://www.youtube.com/user/rsphadmissions

And here is the webinar schedule: http://www.sph.emory.edu/admissions/meet-us/recruitment-calendar/index.html

I just came back from visiting the Admissions office at Rollins. They said that my application was only just forwarded to the depts on 1/21 (verified 12/14) because I had an "outstanding item" on my to-do list that really was for my special standing student (non degree seeking student) application. I had applied to be a special standing student earlier in the year for this semester (Spring '15) so I could take a SAS class, but I realized it wouldn't work with my work schedule. I guess for the special standing student app, they needed my actual transcript (even though I had sent it) and that's what held up my SOPHAS application. All your applications are on OPUS (including my old one when I applied for undergrad in 2009). Not sure if anyone else had applied for special standing or any other Emory program as well - this may be why your SOPHAS app is backed up.

I know what you mean about feeling discouraged. I'm starting to wish I had just applied for regular epi!

Excellent! Another "mature" colleague.... Will you be going full time? I'm planning to do 2 classes in the fall and see how it goes. I'm taking a class at Rollins as a special standing student now and there are times when having some "life experience" does help. The professor had to explain in depth co-pays, deductibles, FSA accounts to the class since about 2/3 had yet to really ever deal with health care expenses, let alone selecting health care.

I will be going full time. The company I work for will let me work part time remotely so I'm trying to figure out if I can work that in also. Giving up my salary and going into poor grad student is going to be TOUGH! I'm taking a couple of classes at the local college here just to get back into the swing of classes, studying, etc. It's been a long time. 🙂 How do you like the atmosphere at Rollins?

I know these weren't directed at me - even though 22 year-olds say I'm very mature, or was that just old? - but I just wanted to say I appreciate your insight into this; I've been out of college a few years and have a pretty good job, good benefits, awesome relationship with my boss, and am relatively respected at my org. It's not health-related, but I kinda don't want to leave. It's also hard to give up the idea of money! 401k! business travel all around the country! free soda 24/7! (ok, clearly I'm not a nutrition program person) cockroach-infested free gym downstairs!

My boyfriend has encouraged me to do what you've mentioned, @sfmaster and work full-time and go to school part-time, at least for the first semester - assuming I go to GW (which is my first choice considering my current location, my desired future location, and the specific program is dead-on for what I want to do). Obviously I don't want to torpedo future career opportunities for a fear of leaving the nest, so to speak, though since I don't work in the industry that I want to eventually work in. How are both of you finding taking a class or two while working full-time?

I know it's not uncommon (my boyfriend does it, but at the undergraduate level - he's earning his degree now in his late-twenties while working - pretty impressive to me!) but I've never done it. My concern is that I have (hopefully not TMI here) what I can only describe as borderline narcolepsy. This is not something I've self-diagnosed; it was finally diagnosed late last year after testing due to years of chronic excessive sleepiness. I'm being treated, but progress is slow due to other factors. I'm seriously afraid I'll, like, fall asleep all over the place - especially in a class after working 8 hours. Or, equally as bad, fall asleep immediately after class and never get any work done. UGH. So much drama, though, I'm glad that I have the opportunity to even be concerned about working full-time and going to school part-time!

I feel ALLLLLL of your pain here, wanted to just offer up solidarity 🙂
I have been working since I was 19 and am taking out my 401(k) for this. I have a really cushy job situation that some think I am absolutely crazy for leaving, but it's just boring work to me and I want to feel like I'm doing something meaningful for society. I also have to sell my condo and move away from my boyfriend. I also have severe fatigue; sounds like your situation might be a little more severe but I do get extremely tired and not able to do much at times. I'm working really hard on getting healthy before school but this stress isn't helping! Seeing an endocrinologist soon I hope. Anyway, I read this and was glad to see I'm not all alone in dealing with health and big life changes etc etc and wanted to share that you're not either. You have the right perspective though; we are lucky to be in these situations. Good luck to you and I hope you get some answers soon on your health situation. 🙂

Thank you - I'm sure I could have found this easily. I just had a tooth implant in and am on pain pills, so didn't feel like it, ha ha :wacky:

I just got the infamous "pay admissions deposit" link on OPUS!!! Hopefully it leads to an acceptance letter...

For people who have already gone through this- how long did you have to wait until your letter showed up??

Good Luck to everyone still waiting! I know it's the worst.

Congrats! I haven't personally experienced it yet (still waiting 🙁), but I've heard it usually takes a few hours before the official acceptance letter appears. What department did you apply to?

Took mine several days to appear, but then again I already knew because I had received an email from the department separately.

Undergrad School: University of Washington, Seattle
Undergrad GPA: 3.4
Major/Minor: Public Health/Slavic Languages
GradGPA (if applicable): n/a
Grad Studies (if applicable): n/a
GRE (including date taken) or Other Test (if applicable): August 25, 2014; Very average scores (52% percentile), although math could have been better.
Experience/Research (please, be brief):
  • Preclinical research experience in an academic lab for women's reproductive health (3 years).
  • Data management and data analysis experience (quantitative and qualitative) with various employers (NGO, government, private biopharma, academic research) (6 years).
  • I currently work at a large, global public health NGO on various projects including women's reproductive health, vaccine development, and health technologies (2.5 years). I have a broad range of experience (working at a not-for-profit will do that!) from outreach, program implementation/close-out, research, creation of survey tools, etc.
  • Volunteer experience in tutoring refugee children in after school programs and; in advocacy and outreach for anti-trafficking legislation (2 years).
I have only applied to Tulane; I appreciate the research done at this institution and the possibilities for public health experience available in New Orleans. I applied through SOPHAS on December 15th and my application was verified on December 23. Tulane acknowledged receipt of my application on January 5. I am currently awaiting an admissions decision.

Does anyone have an idea of the turn-around on admissions decisions? I emailed Tulane on January 22; still no response. I do realize decisions can take several weeks, but the waiting is killing me!

Applied: Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine
Accepted:
Rejected:
Waitlisted:

I am still waiting to hear back although I have found several people who have had much quicker turn arounds for Tulane on their admissions decision. I know that the department I applied to (as well as a couple others) are actually going to be restructured for the Fall 2015 start (and I also know they are not sure exactly what this will look like yet), perhaps this is the cause of the wait.

Any advice on whether I should call the admissions office for a status update or am I just too anxious?

Everyone here is so nice! I love you all. Unless I don't get into Emory, then I hate you. No, but for real, at first I was really afraid to post and just lurked for months all summer. I'm glad I stopped being a creeper. You guys make my days so much easier.

Aaaand, here's the direct link to the You've Applied, Now What: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCm4pP8P9ORDM8jX9_w37kCw

Answer: wait, terrified.

Don't live at Campus Crossing!! It's so much money and it's not away from everything, unless you don't have a car, and then it is in the middle of nowhere. Use Trulia, Zillow, Craigslist, etc. Fair warning, traffic is hell getting into/out of Emory, and parking is 600 a year so unless you are a distance runner you'll want to make sure you're living on the Cliff (school bus) route. Marta (subway) isn't too bad, but it doesn't go to Emory. However, you can take it to Decatur and a Cliff bus will pick you up and drop you off in front of the hospital (across the street and maybe a block away from Rollins). At least, it did as of May 2009 when I graduated. Lastly, if I get in, I'll be looking into renting housing from my alma mater, Agnes Scott. They have beautiful historic homes a few miles away that they rent out. If you don't have a gigantic dog and are female, they also always need resident directors.

I didn't apply to Tulane so someone might be able to give you an idea on when they send follow up communications, but we're in the thick of decisions time, so that's probably why it's taking a little longer. I would wait a couple of more weeks before panicking. Unfortunately, calling the schools isn't going to do too much right now.

For me it showed up about 3 hours later. It should show up in a few hours! I got an e-mail about a month later saying I would receive my admissions packet and gift via fedex soonish. That was on 1/28. So, that's what you have to expect now. Congratulations!!!!!

Congrats! I haven't personally experienced it yet (still waiting 🙁), but I've heard it usually takes a few hours before the official acceptance letter appears. What department did you apply to?
I applied to EPI first, and then GLEPI.
Still not sure what program I have been accepted to. I called and they said the letters may not go out until later this week.

Well congrats! I'd assume if you didn't hear anything about being rejected from Epi, that it was to your first choice program.

Just got an e-mail from Emory, it says my application was sent to my second choice (so, denied for Epi) but then after the salutation, it lists both programs as being denied. No letter posted to OPUS yet. But it's okay, because Boston is my ancestral homeland. At least, after the shtetls of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Plus, this means my (very) deep seated hatred for Emory can continue.

Anything useful from the webinar that you may be able to share? I really wanted to listen in, but was stuck at work.

They will have online. Some information about housing, Visit Emory - register early. Encouragement to seek feedback if rejected and try to reapply. Open to answering questions.

To be clear - I don't work full time 🙂 I am a SAHM with three children and a husband with a super demanding job. I'm involved in lots of projects and volunteer work so yes very busy but lots of flexibility. I would really say don't be penny wise and pound foolish. Yes you lower the financial impact by working through school but you might undermine your ability to be successful, fully take advantage of the program you are investing in, extending the time required to graduate. You'll be less able to take on projects at school, meet up with others. If you gain admission to an excellent top tier program I would take the leap to just go all in. This will make yourself available to all the opportunities in your program, you'll do better at school, you'll know more about what you want to do when you leave your program, you'll be more connected, you'll have relevant work experience from internships and projects, you'll have study abroad experience perhaps...... Lots of other factors could influence this decision but this is my take..... Good luck!

Sure! It's a bit tough to explain but I was simply unhappy with the way I answered the questions. I unfortunately felt very nervous on the phone and as a result, I was not able to think very clearly. So, when they asked me a question, I just said what came to my mind. What I was able to come up with did a poor job a reflecting me and my goals and fully answering the question in my opinion. I just think I could have done a lot better and I was disappointed with my performance. I hope that makes sense. If you have any questions about it let me know =)

I actually interviewed with the UW GCPD a couple of weeks ago! Their questions were pretty tough. I had practiced quite a bit beforehand and thought that I had brainstormed just about every question under the sun, but OF COURSE they came up with different ones haha. It's my top choice as well (and the only place I applied...). At least we should know by the end of this month!

I'm sorry to hear it 🙁 But Boston will be way cooler than Atlanta (though not warmer) and it's always good to harbor a nice grudge inside!

Finally heard back from a school - Johns Hopkins, and found out I got accepted into their MSPH Health Policy program! :soexcited:So I decided to stop lurking and post up some stats. I can vouch for people who don't have amazing GRE scores but just enough to get in. lol

Has anyone heard back from the Johns Hopkins MSPH program? Now that I've heard back from every other school except them it's making me even more anxious to hear back! I just want to be able to finalize where I'll be going already...

I just heard back from them today. 🙂

No letter posted to OPUS yet. But it's okay, because Boston is my ancestral homeland. At least, after the shtetls of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Plus, this means my (very) deep seated hatred for Emory can continue.
I'm sorry to hear that. At least you know you'd be happy at Boston! They are a great school.

Finally heard back from a school - Johns Hopkins, and found out I got accepted into their MSPH Health Policy program! :soexcited:So I decided to stop lurking and post up some stats. I can vouch for people who don't have amazing GRE scores but just enough to get in. lol

Rejected:

Nervously waiting to hear from the other schools. I'm not feeling super confident right now, especially because of my not so great GRE scores and also the lack of any public health related experience.
I would not worry about your GRE scores. You're still well above the 50th percentile and you have an excellent undergrad GPA. You've also already more than proven you can succeed in grad school. You have a very competitive application.

Do you even need to report your GRE score? Most programs exempt that if you have a prior graduate degree.

Actually, yes - I specifically asked because I really didn't want to take the GRE after all these years 😵 !!

Thanks! But I guess I've been out of this game for so long that I feel like I've lost the competitive edge. Lurking here was reassuring, as was the first acceptance from Pitt even though it's not my first choice.

I'm sorry to hear it 🙁 But Boston will be way cooler than Atlanta (though not warmer) and it's always good to harbor a nice grudge inside!

You have no idea. They were my first UG interview and campus tour. I had some typical self-important frat brah. He was so mean to me and talked such trash about the other schools I was interested in that I didn't apply to Emory (good thing, because I would have hated it). I ended up a few miles away, and every encounter with Emory UGs reminded me why I didn't go there. Plus, the UGs hated everyone that went to my college, so forget that. Though, the grad students are wonderful, smart, engaging people.

I am worried about Boston/DC. It is currently mid-70s outside here and I'm shivering. I better hope my thyroid starts to function before October.

Haha, I am from CA and went to UG in DC. It took me a while to adjust to the cold, but luckily DC is not too bad as far as winter goes. Minimal snow, and usually you don't have to leave the house when it does because the city shuts down 🙂.

I miss DC! I've been reliving the bottle of emotions that I experienced last year by hearing about all of your decisions. For those waiting on UNC, Valentine's Day was the day last year. Hopkins will be in a few more weeks, I'm sure.

Me as well! They seemed so nice though, it made me even more excited. Best of luck to you guys, the waiting game is tough!!!

Thanks for the input guys! I'm hoping it won't be the thing that breaks my application =P Good luck to you both!

I'm from India and landed straight in the Boston area for my PhD. I had never seen snow or temps below 60F, so I had to adjust pretty quickly :dead:

Another for coordinated dietetics programs here! I'm still waiting to hear back so why not freak out in company, right?

Undergrad School: Cornell
Undergrad GPA: 3.4
Major/Minor: Chemistry, Minor in Nutrition

GRE: V: 164 (93%) Q: 159 (74%) W: 4

Experience/Research:
4 years working as a lab assistant in a genetics lab (no research of my own though)
3 months living in Tanzania working for a NGO
A few leadership roles in clubs, member of a service fellowship... just a lot of volunteer stuff in general actually
Summer interning at a PH nonprofit and I've been doing web-based research for them every few months since
Months shadowing two dieticians and my county's WIC program (I also did a small project with them)
I also work full-time at a pharmacy

Applied: UNC Chapel Hill - MPH/RD (12/8), Johns Hopkins - MSPH/RD (sent for review 1/21), Pitt -MS/RD (1/29), GSU- MS/RD (1/13), UTSW -MS/RD (2/1)

UNC is my top choice 🙂

I feel very nervous because, while I have a lot of different experience, not much of it is in nutrition. There's an unfortunate lack of opportunities in my area (I'm from a really rural part of PA) so I did what I could, but I'm afraid that won't be enough.

I applied December 10. Still waiting for that Login information though!

Got the email saying "Decision ready" at the beginning of this week. Got the login today...but no decision is posted. 🙁 Maybe it needs some time to update?

How long did it take anyone to hear back from Drexel?
