MPH Fall 2015: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just found out I was accepted to UW's Nutritional Sciences program but waitlisted for the Dietetics portion. I wouldn't go without being accepted to the Dietetics program. I'm bummed because it was my first choice! For others that have been waitlisted, did the tell you your position on the list?

Of course its a given that you need to prepare for any type of interview but its also not necessary to treat it like a be all end all for getting in.
I treated every part of my application like it was the be all end all for getting in, especially the interview. I left absolutely no stone unturned. I also got into my #1 school. I don't think it's unreasonable to assume there is some correlation between my approach and the outcome...

Waitlist still means there is a chance!!! Do you mind me asking how you were informed? I thought UW Dietetics was sending things via mail in the 3rd/4th week of Feb??

Hang in there. Alternates/waitlisted people get picked up all the time.

Usually no more than half the people who receive an offer from a school end up taking it. If that percentage falls lower, you're in business. Keep the faith...

It took Pitt 3 weeks to send a pretty curt rejection. I heard from BU in week 4. Now in week 6 and still waiting on Tufts and Harvard.

I would email Tufts. I heard back in 2 weeks from them and I submitted late!

I see where you're coming from and I agree, I do. But you're really killing the vibe, man. That's why people aren't responding favorably even though you're right. At this point, we are mostly in or out, so no use making people feel bad.

Just got waitlisted to Tufts...
It says to let them know if I would like to remain on the waitlist (definitely) and if I wish, to update my application (I do- I'm currently working with an NGO in India, and I didn't put that on my app). They didn't really leave instructions on how to do so... I assume that I should email admissions, but any suggestions? *dying to go to Tufts*

Well, I got an email today from Johns Hopkins and they want an interview! 🙂 Well, the RD portion of the MSPH/RD program wants an interview.

That makes me wonder: would they go to all the trouble of interviewing me for the RD portion if they hadn't already decided to accept me into the MSPH? Because I'm pretty sure they could just tell me I can't be in the RD practicum but still accept me for MSPH.

On a related note: does anyone have any suggestions for cheap but safe places to stay in Baltimore?

Let me know if you find any places too!

for those of you applying for Yale chronic epi MPH like me, I emailed them yesterday asking about my application status and they said mine is still currently under review and I will be notified by end of Feb....

I am also waiting for their decision.....it has been 5 weeks since they got my app....

That wasn't my intent, but your point is well made and well taken. My apologies...

Scholarships: I'm assuming that I'm not gonna get much money from any school LOL so helpppp. Does anyone have any scholarships they'd suggest looking at/applying for? Thanks!

Thanks guys! I know you're right but it was definitely discouraging. I also was hoping to make a decision earlier on to start making arrangements but I wouldn't think I would hear back about a waitlist spot until pretty close to April 15th.

They emailed me because I am out of the country and it would take forever to get mail to me. You'll be hearing very soon though!!

I am also waiting for their decision.....it has been 5 weeks since they got my app....

This ends week 8 for me! I've heard back from 6 out of 8 schools to which I've applied. Just waiting on Harvard and Yale at this point.

I've been looking around and applying but I think I'm SOL as a 26 year old career changer with a bland cultural and ethnic background. However, there's a ton out there for people in other situations.

Some schools are nice enough to provide a list of outside funding opportunities (which really just means searching for scholarships):
Go to External Funding Opportunities: http://www.publichealth.pitt.edu/ho...-aid/types-of-aid/grants-and-scholarships#efo

http://publichealth.columbia.edu/apply/financial-aid/outside-funding

That should get you started. Of course there's always fastweb, scholarships.com, etc.

Wow i had no idea that Yale is THAT slow...... 🙁

I suspect I'm on the cusp or something.

yeah I emailed Yale because I submitted on 10.31 and I still haven't heard (rolling admissions yeah right) and they said that 'your admission is currently in review status and you should hear within 2 weeks' I applied to the HPM department

I thought rolling admissions means the earlier you submit your application, the faster you receive a decision. I guess that is not the case for Yale......ughhhh

Thank you! Hopefully you will be hearing soon too!
I hope so too! Emory is kind of the one thing I'm waiting on right now, and am getting to the point that I need to make a decision very soon for a variety of reasons. I may end up calling them soon to see if I can get any sort of update. I wonder if I was possibly silent waitlisted?

It's more like the earlier you submit, the faster they'll look at it. It doesn't necessarily mean they'll be faster to make a decision. I feel your pain 🙁

I called a couple weeks ago, and was planning on calling Wednesday if I hadn't heard. I would definitely recommend it!

Hi - to you and the rest of the people who applied for Columbia HPM, did you have a phone interview? When was your application verified and how soon after were you accepted? Any help you can give me would be great! 🙂

Hi sorry for the late response! Yes I had a phone interview 1/17. I think that was the first round of interviews. It was extremely short, approx 10ish minutes and I thought I did poorly but didn't. Basically it was why columbia, what you want out of it, what you want to do for public health. Very straightforward. Interviewer was receptive to questions as well.

My application was verfied 11/10, interview 1/17, accepted 2/10! Good luck!

Oh my gosh 5:15pm and no news from Hopkins. I guess the 8-10 weeks time-frame was completely arbitrary? I think everyone around me at work today must have thought I was crazy because every time I got an e-mail from a "school of public health" that was not Hopkins--which happened like 5 times today?!?!--I basically yelled and growled at my phone. It was a very productive day as far as unsubscribing from spam mail. Grumblegrumblegrumble.....

Got an email from UNC-Chapel Hill today. No bueno. It was a sort-of-nice rejection (directly from the department I applied to), but I'm sure it was a generic explanation. I'm still crossing my fingers for those that applied there- their program is incredible! Hopefully all you guys hear better news today! After all, we are all in this together!

ALSO. I asked a question about psych epi on another forum to help with narrowing down schools and got this response. Does anyone know how I can dig deep enough to get the "academic flavor" of the epi programs for comparison sake?:

You should think carefully about the kind of epi that you will want to go into. Different schools have different flavors. HSPH is overrun by the causal inference police and JHU will soon be, but they are large enough schools that you can develop into a different kind of epidemiologist if you choose to.

Just freaked out when I saw an email from Emory. It was just an admissions newsletter. This wait may be making me go crazy.

Haha...ME TOO! After receiving some bad news, I thought I had some good news to balance it all out. I'm really addicted to checking my email and OPUS. It's bad. Real bad. It's all I ever think about all day, haha.

Congrats! I was just accepted to the Advanced Professional MPH in Applied Biostatistics & Epidemiology! Maybe we will be there together. 🙂

Congrats! Are you planning to attend the open house on March 27th?

I'm in the same boat! I turned my application in January though so kind of late. Hopefully we hear something next week!

Good to know! What kind of response did they give when you called?
I called admissions and they forwarded me to the Epi department. They asked my name and then told me that it was currently with a faculty member. Definitely didn't seem like a big deal.

Some of them are not too difficult to find out. I think you basically have to look at the faculty in the epi department and see what their research interests are. Also look at what kind of research centers they have in the epi department as well as what are some of the current projects. For example, Columbia seems to do a lot of work around psychiatric and neuro epidemiology and infectious disease epidemiology. GWU epi department focuses mainly on HIV as they have a partnership with the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation in D.C.

Connecting with current epi students in the school would definitely be helpful too.

Ahhh I just saw a post on Emory's FB that the acceptance packages are going out 3 days ago with a picture of all the boxes. Hoping that doesn't mean they've already finished with the acceptance decisions 🙁

I honestly have to say that I have had an amazing experience with the advisors at UC Berkeley, no other school has tried as hard to call every week or so to check up and see how I am doing and to ask if I have any questions and now I get an email saying they are offering me $500 in travel funding to visit them?! I think I'm in love 😍

I saw that too! But, my OPUS still doesn't have a decision on it!

Wow that is excellent!! That's way above and beyond. I can't even get ahold of some of the advisors at other schools.

Thanks! Well I'm definitely intending to do psychiatric epidemiology. The post was asking what schools are considered the "best" for that. The responses I've gotten are to look for a school that is known for the "type" I want to do and not necessarily psych. I gotta be honest I don't know what that means beyond psych.
