MPH Fall 2016: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I don't think so, I think your application is automatically sent. I think OPUS is just where they post your admissions decision, but I highly doubt any decisions will be posted before the new year. They also may email you but I'm not certain.

I agree with the above! If Emory is similar to how it is applying undergrad, they'll more than likely send your application once it is completed and verified along to your departments. OPUS is where you'll check your decision and it's the main system Emory uses for grades, class registration etc so it'll become a common tool if you choose to go there! I've heard and been told too that Emory tends to post their decisions from January to March, with some after that too so it's the waiting game until then.

I highly recommend checking out their admissions guide. It does a good job of answering some questions about the process too (it's helped me because SOPHAS confuses me). If anyone has any questions about Emory too, feel free to ask (I went there as an undergrad and work in the Department of Pediatrics and Yerkes as a researcher).

____________

I have the Oregon MPH as my safe school, but I figured I had nothing to lose (except time and money lol) applying to a few big names in the meantime.

Do I have a chance at any of my reach schools?

Yes surely go for it. You never know, your profile seems super and your GRE score can be ignored. Quantitative percentile has more weightage for courses like biostatistics and epidemiology. So you do have chances, least you have your safe school. So no worries. Good luck 🙂

I just wanted to make a comment about this so that there isn't any misinformation on this board. Your GRE score will NOT be ignored. They are an integral part of your application, along with your GPA, experience, letters of recommendation, and statement of purpose. That being said, there are certain steps you can take to offset a weaker area in your application. As an example, your GPA is strong and your experience is out of this world. It is only your GRE scores that are an issue, but I think that your GPA, LORs, and experience should offset them nicely. I have no doubt that you will get in somewhere if you apply smart. At this point you have two options.

Option A: Retake the GRE and let the schools you applied to know that you are retaking it. Work really hard on that quant score to try to get it up to at least 150. When you get your scores, send them to the schools (you can do four for free at the test center).

Option B: Apply as is, but include a couple more safety schools besides Oregon, just so you have more options. Since SOPHAS allows up to five letters of recommendation, would it be possible to get some from your local promotion work and/or your community engagement/outreach work. Since these two are a big part of your application, I think they would strengthen your app. In fact, I would suggest using these two instead of the one from your epi professor, as I suspect his will not be as strong.

Good luck

I received an email from Minnesota 2 weeks ago saying that I was admitted by the admission committee and a final admit letter will be sent to me soon. Haven't heard anything since. I'm worried

They are probably closed for Christmas and New Year's. If they already told you that you were admitted, final admit letter or not, you are most likely admitted. It seems unthinkable for them to do otherwise. Wait for that final admit letter after New Years, when the admissions office opens up again. Think of your acceptance as a Christmas present.

Hey everyone!
Happy holidays to everyone. I kinda went overboard in applying to 11 schools but I was so scared I wouldn't get into one. :/

Undergrad School: Liberal Arts (very middle of the pack nationwide)
Undergrad GPA/Major GPA: 3.87
Major/Minor: International Relations
Grad Studies (if applicable): 2 Masters in unrelated fields
GRE (including date taken) or Other Test (if applicable): (2011) V 700 (96%) ; Q 690 (56%) ; A 6 (99%) I suck at math exams. They scared the living daylights out of me.
Experience/Research (please, be brief):
Carried out a qualitative, research project with global health nonprofits around the area. Have interviewing experience.
One year AmeriCorps focusing on health equity.
My medical anthropology class was a real turning point for me to switch disciplines.
Still really new in public health but I've always pursued health topics in other graduate studies.

Interested in: Community health promotion and research

Your GRE score is excellent and your profile sounds good too. Don't retake GRE. I am also an FMG and till now I have been accepted from 6 schools including Johns Hopkins, Boston, George Washington. My GRE score is lower than you (150v/166q/3.5w). So best of luck.

Thank you! I guess I'll just wait and see. Your reply does make me more confident!

Just got accepted to Minnesota Environmental Health this morning with a video message thing via email. I think they're sending out the official emails soon, but hey at least we have a decision from them!

Questions:
  • I should have my last letter of rec in by today (professors let me down on the timeline of this, unfortunately) and should be in line to be verified by tomorrow. Any idea of how long the verification process is currently taking?
  • For those who have heard back, how long did it take to hear back with a decision from BU, Emory, or GW once you were verified?
Thank you! And good luck to everyone!!
For me, GWU answered within ten days of verification. I was verified in the first few days of December. Still waiting on on BU and Emory, which were verified 12/1 and 12/4 respectively.

For those who submitted to BU, did any of you run into log-in issues with the supplemental application? They said to login using your SOPHAS username/password, which is what I did, but it keeps giving me an error message saying my UN/PW are incorrect. I logged in to SOPHAS after seeing the error message and it worked without any problems. I already emailed BU about this, but I'm wondering if anyone else has encountered the same issue...

Hey folks! Don't normally post in these, but I'm getting a little anxious, since so many of you have heard from U of Minnesota. Has anyone heard from the Public Health Nutrition MPH program? That seems to be one of the few missing from GradCafe as well.

Thanks!

I had the same issue and the next day it was better. I did email them so I'm not sure if it takes time, or if our emails somehow help.

I just received an email that said:

The supplemental application is managed through SOPHAS, and they are experiencing technical difficulties at this time. Please do not try to complete your supplemental application. We will notify you as soon as the SOPHAS system is fixed so you can complete your supplemental application in a timely manner. Your application will still be considered as on-time for the January 5 priority deadline.
So the emails definitely helped. I'm glad I'm not the only one who had this issue!

I am not the most qualified in terms of GPAs and test scores, but I'm hoping my overall application would be convincing enough. First-generation immigrant; first person in my family to graduate college; worked full time throughout my college/grad years; written and published a book; etc. I had a great personal statement, and some good letter of recommendations, but I'm still a very long-short candidate (far outside the norm).

I understand my chances are very, very, slim, but I've always believe that appearing (in this case applying) is 9/10th of the law. I have lots of backup options if I don't get accepted to those three.

Accepted to GWU today for Community-Oriented Primary Care!!! I seriously couldn't be happier!!! It's one of my top choices! :soexcited:

Also, I received the same email from BU today - should we try to do the supplemental application tomorrow then?
Congrats on your acceptance! It looks like they've resolved the issue cuz I just tried it again and it worked so I'm guessing yours will too 🙂

Thank you!! 🙂 I applied on December 6th, coursework was verified on December 11th and I heard back that they had received my completed application on that same day. I didn't submit my application until everything had been received by SOPHAS so I believe that's why everything moved so quickly!

I got a confirmation email from Emory letting me know that they received my application on December 22nd and an email about applying for financial aid.. but I haven't received an email that they have sent my application to my first choice department (global health) for review. This is really good feedback, thank you! I think for the moment I will just apply as-is. If I get in, that will be great. If not, I'll take this year to work on getting more experience and strengthening my GRE and the rest of my application. I'm in no hurry, and I would rather wait to get into my top choice schools than rush into a safety I'm not 100% sure about.

Hello everybody, I posted back in November but am re-posting in hopes of you all giving me some feedback. Most of the programs I am applying to are very competitive and I'm concerned about my GRE scores. I thought I was doing great on the Quant section and ended up with a 152 (48%) 🙁. I think you have a very good chance of getting into at least Pitt and GW, but no one on this forum can say where you will get in for sure. As far as program recommendations, I believe you are the only person who is able to answer that question. Research other schools and pick places where you truly think you will fit based on location, jobs, and the specific program you are interested in.

Got an interview from Dartmouth today! I had no idea MPH programs did interviews!

You have a good chance of getting into U of M., Indiana, GW, and Emory. Columbia and Boston might be a tougher competition, but you'd clearly get into at least half of those on your list. Good luck.

I got a confirmation email from Emory letting me know that they received my application on December 22nd and an email about applying for financial aid.. but I haven't received an email that they have sent my application to my first choice department (global health) for review. Should I be worried?

It took them a week or two to send mine on to my first choice dep. Also, the office was closed from Dec 23/24 till Jan 4 for the holidays so its not that something is wrong, the office has just been closed.... Give it a week or so... Also they are prob getting over run with apps now, busy time of year for them.

For those accepted to Emory, how long was it till you received an acceptance since you were verified? Is there any type of supplemental application they send?

Emory hasn't started to send decisions yet, to my knowledge. No one on this or gradcafe has heard from them yet. They'll prob start sending out stuff in a few weeks. Also it takes 3-6 weeks from when your first choice dep. Gets your app till they will notify you; according to their website.

Hope this helps 🙂

Just received the same email from USF, except I applied Global Health Practice, not Communicable Disease.

"We are pleased to inform you that the Admissions Committee at the University of South Florida’s College of Public Health has recommended that you be admitted to the Global Health Practice MPH program.

However, since you have applied for the dual concentration, we are awaiting a decision on the second concentration from the Admissions Committee. As soon as we have the decision from the Academic Department regarding the second concentration, we will contact you with an update and recommend next steps to follow."

Congrats! I had actually called earlier to ask a question (right before getting my acceptance) and the rep. told me that some of the concentrations are more backed up than others, Epi is reviewing all the Ph.D candidates before MPH so I might have to wait a while to hear back from my other concentration - not sure if it'll be the same for you!

Hey everyone,

I need a little advise. It may just be my nerves acting up with all this waiting. I'm trying to decide if I should send an updated résumé into Emory and Yale.

On my first one I only listed my 3 main peace corps projects because they were my main projects and for Space, but now I'm realizing that while those were public Health projects the were not related to Epi (which is what I'm applying to) and are more environmental health. I do things that are more related to Epi in my day to day work, like tracing immunization defaulters. I dk why I didn't think to put it on the résumé originally....

Is it worth it to send an updated résumé or will it just be a hastle on the admissions office and make me seem unprepared and forgetful...?

Also, can you add to activities on SOPHAS once it's been verified? I know you can add new ones and can not remove old ones, but can I add to old ones?

What do you all think?

Also, I see lots of acceptances today, congrats!

Hey All-
Maybe someone can help me answer this question...
So, if my GPA is on the lower side (3.0), GRE scores are decent (154Q, 158V, 4.0W), but I have nearly 3 years of experience in environmental health. I'd rather focus on health policy/administration. Would it make sense to pick my specialty as environmental health, then switch (if that's possible) when I get into a school? Or if I apply to health policy/admin programs and they deny me-- will they pass off my application to another dept.? Any help would be appreciated.

Your stats are similar to mine, but I had higher GRE scores and far less experience. Also my main experience was in global health and I applied to epidemiology programs. You can look up my post in the Fall 2015 thread for my stats and the schools I was accepted to for comparison if it helps. In a nutshell, apply to the concentration you want, and apply smart to maximize the possibility for acceptances. Do not apply to another concentration that you think is easier and then try to switch, it will only add additional stress. I think you should be fine.

I'm not sure about editing experience in SOPHAS, but it might be possible for you to send them a CV with all of your experience (work, Peace Corps, etc). And don't worry about your Peace Corp experience being environmental health related, most of them are anyway. No one in their right mind is going to look at your application and go, "Oh, Peace Corp, he doesn't have epi experience, darn!"😉 I would say that this is a major selling point on your app.
