MPH Fall 2016: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

@Pudu2009 Has the snowstorm in DC affected your studies in any way? I've been hearing some horror stories about the metro shutting down/ Uber 40x rates.

I don't have Uber, but my roommate does and she said that the rates were crazy Tuesday - Thursday. The buses started getting affected Wednesday night during the first snow flurry before the big blizzard, and the metro was shut down Friday night till Sunday night, with limited service on Monday (running underground only). Metro was back to normal schedule on Tuesday, though lots of hiccups (single-tracking, problems at one station slowing down most lines, etc). My roommate and I didn't leave the apartment Thursday night till Tuesday morning. Metro buses were running on a severe schedule on Tuesday, a moderate snow schedule on Wednesday, and a light snow schedule on Thursday. They are back to their normal routes, but there are still 30 - 50 minute delays due to icy roads. The DASH buses (Alexandria transit) were also on a weird schedule earlier this week, but they are back to normal, save icy road delays.

In terms of school, we had no classes on Monday, because even though the blizzard had passed, they couldn't clear the snow in time to open the campus 🙄. School resumed at 10:00 AM Tuesday, and has been opened at normal schedule since. Unfortunately, it took a while for the roads to be cleared, and many students still missed class on Tuesday and Wednesday. The roads a pretty good now, though more ice seams to be appearing as the snow melts, so conditions are very slippery. This week, I've been giving myself two hours to get to school because I live in Alexandria and far away from the metro, so rely heavily on buses. Our apartment complex has a shuttle to the metro, but it only runs from 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, so it's not always an option for me, especially when I have class from 4:00 to 9:00. This week I didn't get home till 11:00 most nights.

If you do decide on GW, here are a few tips. If you are not from a cold area (I'm from the Bay Area so huge transition), make sure you have tall, sturdy boots, a heavy jacket, a couple scarfs, and gloves (see if you can get the text gloves so you can use your phone without removing them). My roommate is from Ohio so she thinks 40 degrees is not cold while I'm bundled up in a heavy jacket. If you get migraines, make sure to take a dark pair of wrap-around sunglasses as the snow is very reflective. Also, try to get an apartment close to a metro station so that you don't have to rely on buses. It is more expensive to live by the stations, but you save time and and lot of hassle. Avoid living in areas where you have to take the red line, as it is very unreliable. Virginia would be your best bet, as you have access to several lines and it is cheaper than living in DC. Alexandria is nice, especially Old Town; just wish we lived walking distance from the metro. Oh, and GW has an off-campus housing website where you can create a profile and find roommates and housing. Most of the housing listings have specifics such as pet friendly, amenities included in rent, un/furnished, carpet vs hardwood floors, etc, and you can do specific searches. The roommate search is equally extensive.

Anyway, that was my snow week. Hoping things are a little easier next week. Until the next blizzard.

I just got an email from Columbia (Department of Health Policy & Management) for a phone interview. Has anyone already had a phone interview at Columbia or can give me advice on what to expect and how to prepare?
Hey, did you already have your interview? If so, how'd did it go? I just got an email too and Im curious about what kinds of questions to expect

Thank you for the advice! The weather situation sounds rough but given that nearly all of my applied schools are on the East Coast I will definitely have to get used to it.

The interview was pretty laid back, more like talking to someone new rather than an interview.
She asked me about my background, why I was interested, etc. And then she talked about her experience at the program.

Do all candidates eventually accepted to Columbia's HPM receive an interview?

A bit anxious as I haven't received any follow up mails from UTH after the acceptance mail in mid December. I e-mailed them and they said that the system upgrades are taking time. Anyone else in the same boat?

Also, how is UMass Amherst SPH? There's a supplemental application too, so thinking if it's worth applying as I already have an acceptance from UTH.

Has anyone heard from WUSTL? They definitely said we'd hear back before February, and well, that's Monday....

WUSTL is my number one, so I am anxious to hear from them as well. Nothing so far....

Did anybody that applied to U Minnesota's MPH PHAP Program hear back from them yet? I submitted by the Dec. 1 deadline and I still have not heard anything 🙁

Yes, I applied prior to the deadline and received an acceptance Jan 3. Reach out them to inquire about your application.

Yeah id say calling them would help. Or email, whichever. I also have received a decision from them. From what I can tell they're very accommodating! 🙂

Hi, so when I was accepted last year, they said the same thing. If it's the same as last year, you probably won't receive any information for a long time which can be extremely frustrating.

hello everyone,

Congratulations for who got an acceptance for this next semester this year!

Any ideas about when Jhon Hopkins MPH usually reply to the applicants?

But you did finally get proper communication from them, right? I guess it's just a waiting game.
Thanks for the response btw. It helps! 🙂

Although some people have already heard from JH, I think a majority of applicants will be informed in March.

I received the email from JH which informed me that my app had been completed in 12/14.
They sent me the email with the final decision in 1/27.
Hope it may help. 🙂

UTH's admission email said that
New Student Scholarship notifications would be dispersed by February 1st, 2016. I am waiting for the letter..

I haven't done my practicum yet, but the epi-biostats department has several resources to set you up with the practicum. Aside from two academic advisers, there is a member of the department (Toni Thibeaux) who is dedicated specifically to helping with the practicum. There are also mandatory sessions you have to attend before you can start your practicum, along with a course you have to take concurrently. In other words, you don't have to seek help, help is thrust upon you 😉.

Thank you for the helpful info!

Same here 🙁

Accepted to Emory EH-EPI. Have an interview at U Washington for EOH. It is the only school that requires an in person interview for my department, and it is making me a bit nervous!

I applied to boston a few days before people who heard yesterday and haven't heard yet. thoughts??
I wouldn't worry. It could have to do with when the supplemental app was received, LOR's, etc. You should hear back soon!

Thank you Tirara! congratulations and good luck with your studies.

I have received that email at 12/25. I hope that I'll hear from them soon.

Awesome! I feel like with most RDs it's clinical, clinical, clinical but after spending the last 6 months of my internships in front of a computer writing assessments...not for me. At least not long term.

Just as an FYI for anyone interested, I emailed GW about when they'll be sending out funding, scholarship, or any any other awards. They said said scholarships are reviewed independently of the admission committee and will begin in February so we won't hear of any decisions on that till March. The waiting continues....

I know I'd probably be better served by closing this forum/the GradCafe results page, but Berkeley HSB folks found out on this day last year and I can't help but keep hitting refresh. Even though, you know, neither of those places is going to tell me MY result. 😵

I called Johns Hopkins about when we should start hearing back from the MSPH applications, and they said those who applied earlier should start hearing back in a couple weeks!

How do you know it was today? I thought the Montreux predictor didn't show anything today and I haven't seen anything on GradCafe for HSB that early. If it's true, though, then add me to the list of people frantically refreshing email!

Oh man, I somehow missed that! Have you (or has anyone else) called the program to see when the dates will be this year? In the confirmation email I got after my application was complete, they said to expect mid-February to early March...
No idea! I got that email, too. I guess I was hoping it might follow previous years' trends. I haven't called and I'm not sure if anyone else has.

I noticed that on the The Grad Cafe too. I get jumpy every time I see a new email come in through my inbox and when I check it, it's not even from Berkeley. :dead: This whole process is making me very paranoid :poke:
