MPH Fall 2017: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just got accepted into UGA's program does anyone know any more information on the program/how it is? I could not find to much helpful info on the program and I wanted to understand more about it before really making any decision. Thanks!!

Just declined offers at UMich, JHU, and Emory, so hopefully that opens up some spots for those of you on the waitlist!

You should be getting an email from Emily Lakemaker that details how the process works. When they sent me an email, they said that they will reimburse me the specified amount. So, after Visit Emory, they should send emails with all of the instructions.

This!

I have been a ghost on this forum (grad school has been a ride~).

Looking forward to seeing y'all at Visit Emory. Rollins has some dope things planned for ya!:=|:-):

Anyone have any idea about when I should expect to hear back from the following schools: Brown, USC, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, San Jose State University?

Brown-- according to the admissions people, they are no longer promising results by 4/15. I applied in October, waaaay before any deadlines, and that's what I was told last week. I'm mulling over options for dealing with this as (so long as they give me some funding) they are my top choice.

Haven't most people heard from the UCs? I didn't apply so I don't really know.

Still holding out hope on Davis, no hard rejection yet. I assume that if Apr 15 is the deadline to accept or reject current offers, we should know once the first round of people have made decisions. I only applied to the online format of Berkeley for fall, so probably won't find out there until May or June.

Hey guys!

Just got accepted into Yale's MPH program in Social and Behavioral Sciences! I'm most likely going to Yale, but I'm looking for some potential roommates for off-campus housing. Is there anyone here who is also going and hasn't found a living arrangement?

just visited Emory. I wont spoil anything for those who are going there later. but i think it is a great school! genuine people who really want to help you before, during, and after attending school.
But i do hope the admit student day has a good weather. it was raining the day i went, so the emory campus tour was a bit hard...

Brown let me know that I should be receiving a response by this week. And that they were experiencing delays due to the shift to SOPHAS Applied in late Dec

Hey! I am also going to Yale and am looking for a roommate. I am female, 22, and have a 35 pound border collie. I will be studying Health Policy. I will be in New Haven for Admitted Students Day on April 3rd!

Hello! I have heard back from UC Berkeley early January and UC Davis early February. I am still waiting from USC, but 1.5 weeks ago, I received an email stating that my application was now passed onto the department (even though I submitted it late November :/) and that a decision will be made 3-5 weeks later. I'm not sure why my application was delayed THIS long to be sent to the department even though I received an email that all my application stuff was being processed three days after I submitted it.

Also just declined my offers at UC Davis and San Diego State University! Hopefully, this will help out some of you who are still waiting for them.

Does anyone know if Berkeley and Columbia have a group for admitted students for 2017 on Facebook? I'm interested to start looking into finding housing options and just a general feel as to what the incoming class will be. Thanks in advance!

I only applied to SDSU because I live here and can't move my kids around for a grad program. I was pretty nervous because I had been out of school for so long, didn't have research experience, wasn't a traditional applicant, and kinda threw my application together last minute. Anyway, I know a lot of the posts here are from higher achieving students, so I wanted to give a little hope to the more average of us out there 😉

Good luck everyone!

Has anyone received any scholarships from JHSPH? Just wondering if they are done releasing those. My financial aid package doesn't make it a realistic option financially but I really love the program!

This is a good question. I don't think I've heard anything from anyone on this board about awarded scholarships at JHSPH.

What program did you contact/apply to? I applied to behavioral and social health sciences so it would be awesome to hear back this week!

They did say in an email that all of their awards had already been handed out, if I'm not mistaken.

Someone responded to the Johns Hopkins MPH forum a couple weeks back who was actually an (edited*) MSPH applicant, and they were awarded a "merit-based grant" of some kind in their acceptance letter. The MPH students are still waiting to hear about the Bloomberg scholarship, but no one else has self identified as a Sommer or Welch Scholar. I also find it surprising that no one here numbers among them, and I had heard those awards would be going out mid March.... Unclear - Also, no one asked about it at the admitted student's day...

Thanks for the input! I'm in the MSPH program - not sure if that changes anything. Do you know if I should contact my department about this? Or maybe ask when I visit

Sorry -- that's what I meant. He or she was an MSPH student. (I'll edit my above remark.) I would call and ask politely if I were you. If the school is not feasible for you without a scholarship, then this is information you should know to help narrow your decisions. There aren't really great opportunities to ask this sort of thing at admitted student's day unless you ask in front of the whole room.

Thank you for your help!! I'll give them a call tomorrow.

Has anyone's Emory Opus page changed to look like this? I haven't accepted or rejected them. I just signed in last week to see if my financial aid offer was in and it had changed to this format - which seemingly doesn't allow me to do...well anything. If anyone else's looks like this, how to I get back to the main page with messages, to-do list, etc? (Main menu, home, and favorites are all dead ends with no change to the page or no links.) I've asked Emory but no reply for now...

Columbia does have a page but it's a closed group, by invite only. You should have received an invite. It's called the Columbia HPM admitted students 2017 page. Maybe you can request an invite from the student who conducted your interview in case you haven't already been invited.

I wish they had a group for global health too!

So I spoke to one of the MPH program admins at JH accepted student day and it seemed like they sent the "all scholarships have been given״ email erroneously.

Hi all,
I was accepted to:
  • Boston U (+20k merit scholarship),
  • NYU (+24k merit scholarship),
  • Yale, and
  • Columbia.
YSPH is my #1 choice because the program is such a perfect fit for what I'd like to do, but it might be impossible if they don't offer any need-based grants/scholarships. Really freaking out over here! Has anyone heard from them about finaid packages? I'm also curious about Columbia's timeline (my #2 choice). I can't seem to get an email back from their department, so I'm not sure when to expect word from them.

Thanks to anyone who can offer up some info! 🙂

I got accepted to Columbia for their Epi program, so I am not part of HPM.

Yale is known to be a bit stingy when it comes to merit scholarships. I believe only a handful go out each year. They did give me a need-based grant of $15k though, and I think my coming straight out of undergrad had something to do with it. When did you submit your FAFSA+YSPH financial aid form? Their office of financial aid has been incredibly responsive and helpful in my experience, so you can send an email to inquire.

I didn't apply to Columbia, but I think I read on here that you are notified of a merit scholarship with the acceptance letter. No idea about need-based aid, however.

I had quite a bit of luck with Yale for need-based scholarships. I was accepted late December, filled out the financial aid app in January, and got notified of my award the last week of February (with $15k renewable need-based aid). Columbia hasn't released any packages yet, but when I met with an advisor for Admit day, she told me they had a glitch in their system to where they JUST got FAFSAs downloaded a week before. The wait is killing me too, but they seemed to be working hard to get awards finished, so I can't be too mad.

I think the group is for the dept of HPM, including all MPH and MHA students.

I just checked the Facebook group, and they definitely mentioned it's only for the department of HPM. As Epi is a different department, this might not be the right group. In any case, I saw that the Class of 2016 has a FB page for MPH, MHA, and Master of Science; I'm assuming that they haven't created the group for Class of 2017 yet. Will definitely confirm / post more details if I can find an answer at open house! Thanks though 🙂

Oh, my bad then! I didn't realise Epi isn't in the same dept.

When did you receive the email? Another person on the forum also mentioned that all of the scholarships had been released, except for maybe the Bloomberg Fellowship, but I never received an email. It's crazy to think that no one on here received a scholarship to the MPH program. There are some really strong applicants on this forum.

It does seem pretty crazy that no one here is getting any grant money from Hopkins... they really have not been clear about funding.

I know y'all are talking about the MPH program, but for those wondering about the MSPH--I talked to an advisor and she told me: "All admitted applicants were considered for a merit scholarship (MPH and MSPH), and the scholarships have already been awarded. We got so few of them. No one in this program got one."

=/

I didn't get any merit from Columbia and haven't heard about need-based, and when I called they said all merit aid already went out. I've pretty much counted them out though since Yale did offer me merit & need-based grants. I would recommend emailing Jen Farkas at the YSPH financial aid office, she has been very responsive and helpful for me so far.

My timeline for YSPH aid was very different. Applied late November, filled out FAFSA supplement in January, accepted in late February. I immediately contacted the financial aid office the same day I was accepted, since I didn't want to get too excited about Yale if I wasn't going to get any aid (didn't expect to either, since others had been accepted so much earlier). That was a Friday, and they sent my finaid package that Monday. I was super impressed, since every other school has been really evasive and rude about financial aid offers/timelines.

I was unable to attend the UCI open house yesterday and was wondering what you both, or anyone else who was there, thought of it. Any input would be greatly appreciated! 🙂 Also has anyone received financial aid info from them/was that discussed at all yesterday?
Hey! Sorry for the late response. Overall, I thought that the open house was helpful. For 2 hours, there were presentations from the director of graduate study, director of student affairs, current students, and the practicum coordinator.

My takeaways:
  • The size of the program is small (around 30 students). 1st year students are paired with 2nd students. The program encourages networking between the two cohorts.
  • The program seems very flexible. Students can focus on one emphasis. In addition, they can take classes from other emphases and across UCI.
  • The professors are interested in working with students on research. There seems to be a collaborative environment.
  • The practicum coordinator closely works with the students to find a practicum site. Usually, the students complete their practicums in Orange County, but some of the students have completed their practicums elsewhere. The program has a list of sites, but the coordinator is open to hearing students' ideas. At the end of the spring quarter, there is a poster session where students talk about their practicum experiences.
  • UCI recently lunched the Global Health Research Education and Translation (GHREAT) program. Students can participate in seminars, research projects, field studies, etc. I was excited to hear about that!
  • The presenters did not talk much about housing. I would have liked to hear more about that.
  • Throughout the presentations, the presenters emphasized involvement in the community and an interdisciplinary focus on public health.
  • In terms of funding opportunities, most students work as TAs and course readers. Examples include the undergraduate public health courses, and science courses. The current students also mentioned loans.
I hope this helps, and let me know if you have questions!

Anyone have any idea about when I should expect to hear back from the following schools: Brown, USC, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, San Jose State University?
For USC, it took 2 and half months. I applied on November 25. I heard back on February 6.

What does the turn around time look like for Pitt? How long from when you applied did you hear back?

I feel like I am the only one on the planet that hasn't heard from Columbia :lame::corny::shrug:. No portal. nothing. *sigh*
