MPH Fall 2018: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Did anyone who got into Johns Hopkins full time MPH email professors or department heads? Before, during, or after you applied? Just curious if that made a difference. Thanks

Just joined SDN today and submitted my apps...super nervous! Good luck to everyone and any advice is appreciated.

Ahh! When did you graduate? I graduated in 2016. And omg don't say that. There is plenty of room for qualified people, and there's a lot more to an app than just your stats on paper 🙂 Plus, I think psychiatric epi/behavioral health epi is a more unique interest, so hopefully that poses an advantage for us!

Any thoughts on my chances? Also, do you think it hurts my chances that I applied to every school on the final deadline date?

Ahhh is anyone dying to hear back from Emory? I applied to their Epidemiology (MPH) program through SOPHAS on 11/3, got an email stating they received my application on 12/1 and another email on 12/4 stating my application has been forwarded to review. In the same email it said "3-6 weeks (sometimes shorter, sometimes longer)". It's been six weeks and I know there have been holidays in between so I'm assuming it's taking a while for them to review applications but I'm so anxious to hear back! I've been checking OPUS every day!

ME!!! This last Monday was 7 weeks (not that I'm counting 😉). I have a friend who is at Emory now (first year Epi) and she said she was surprised that they told it would be that quick. She applied in December and didn't hear until March.

I'm over 6 weeks too.... I emailed last week and they said it'd be 1-2 more weeks....
Originally their program was my top pick, but the poor communication and false promises have made me a little wary.

hi there!

first time posting since I haven't seen this question covered yet: has anyone applied, accepted, or been rejected from the JHU MPH/MBA program yet?

thanks 🙂

Yeah I emailed to, but all she told me was shortly. I just really want to know. The article you tagged is spot on. Do we know if we'll get an email before OPUS is updated? I know some have gotten emails so far.

I would highly discourage you from going to JHU for MBA. As an undergrad at JHU, I have realized that JHBSPH are far more inteligent than the MBA people. Carey students aren't the brightest you can find, but a lot of your MPH friends will be from the medical school, some of the smartest people in the nation. Carey is a scam at this point. It just got accredited last year.

I emailed the admissionis office at Yale, and they said that some decisions should be coming out this week and next week.
Does anybody have an idea that whether Yale has started to scan through all the applications yet?

I emailed the admissions director because I hadn't received an "application complete" email like others had, and she said that they should be releasing some decisions this week and next week (hopefully).

The UPenn skype interview (for anyone interested) :
It was super short, like a little less than 15 min, and they basically asked 3 questions: why are you interested in pursuing an MPH now, why Penn for your MPH, and what do you see yourself doing with your degree in the future (how will it help you, etc). They were super nice, and let me ask any questions I wanted, and were super easygoing. It was a really like casual interview, not intimidating or tense, and they didn't even really ask about specific things in my application or resume.

Hi Andrew, may I ask what they ask you in the interview for Dartmouth?

As someone who went to a top-15 MBA program I agree. MBA rank matters a TON to corporate recruiters and Carey is not ranked well which will significantly impact your employment options. At the very least you need to talk to current students and research if companies you are interested in working at recruit there. There are far better options where both the MPH and MBA programs are well ranked (ie: Michigan, Harvard, Yale, UNC, Columbia etc).

I am afraid my GRE scores (especially quantitative) are going to hold me back. I was a part-time grad student and worked full-time for the past year, so I did not study like I should have.

Congratulations!! Did you find out about Yale via email or portal? Is there a portal for Yale?
I just received an email from Yale this morning about my acceptance! I am unsure if there is a portal. I did not see a link for one. I am thinking that I have to fill out the intent to attend form and place a non-refundable deposit of $500 first before they send me any more information.

Your GPA isn't bad, which graduate program were you in? To be quite honest your quantitative score is pretty low (I was told by my peers to aim for at least a 50%), and this could be alarming unless you did well in your college-level or graduate-level quantitative courses. I don't know how competitive UM's program is and how much they focus on quantitative aspects, but assuming that you did well in your math courses I think you should be fine as long as you write a good SOP.

I am a current Yale EMD student. Last year, there was no portal; all communication came via email. Don't worry about the deposit right now. You will get plenty of information from Yale including financial aid / scholarships, communication with student ambassadors (current students), emails from professors, admitted students day info, online admissions office chat info, accepted students Facebook group info, and more! I submitted my deposit right near the deadline last year while I waited to hear back from all of the schools I applied to, and I didn't miss out on anything. As long as your deposit is in by the deadline if you choose to attend Yale, you will receive plenty of information.

Just checked my portal, and I got into Hopkins MPH!!! Does anyone know when you'll hear about financial aid/scholarship?
What portal is this? Did Hopkins provide you with a userid and password on submission of application?

I was in the Principles of Public Health Grad Certificate program at UMD.
Because I did not do well at all on the quantitative section, I reached out to the program advisor asking if I should retake the GRE. She told me the best option would just be to submit my app with the current scores and if the they were interested in having me in the program they would contact me and ask that I retake the test to improve the quantitative score. So, that's where I am right now. I have a B average for my undergraduate and graduate quantitative courses (which include biostatistics and epidemiology), so I'm hoping they will take that into consideration. I think my SOP was very good, so it's all just a waiting game right now. We were told that decisions would be sent out 4-6 weeks after applications were submitted, but that was just a generic statement from the graduate school-- they said it could vary from program to program. I am hoping it is sometime soon!

Hi! I have some questions about Yale. I applied to a different department but 1. how easy is it to change your focus once you're enrolled 2. are there a lot of quantitative/biostatistics courses available for EMD? Thank you! 🙂

I'm heading into my 4th week wait for Emory's Health Policy program! For those of you anxiously waiting for Emory, I'm right there with you all since it's my first choice program! lol However, since I ranked 3 programs from 3 different departments, I most likely won't hear anything until March if I don't get into any of the programs I ranked. 🙁

For those of you who have been accepted to Emory, did you receive the email first or did you constantly check OPUS and found your admission decision there before you received the acceptance email?

do you think ranking # of different programs has something to do with the waiting period? because from the email it said the first choice will review then pass onto the next choice. i'm assuming the first choice alone takes 3-6 weeks to review as mentioned in the email. i ranked two programs so my assumption was that i'll be waiting longer once my application gets forwarded to second choice. they said they'll notify me if my application gets forwarded so i am convinced that they're not even done reviewing my application for first choice. it's been over 6 weeks for me.🙁

I got an email saying that I got into my second choice, but OPUS still hasn't been updated.

I definitely know what you mean about New York being too crowded, I was there this summer and felt the same way! I’m also anxiously waiting to hear back from UCLA. I applied to a few other California schools but like you said, they are not at the same level as the east coast schools.

I am anxious about the opposite... I've been on the East Coast my whole life and having been in NYC for 5 years. I only applied to one NYC school (Columbia) and I think my first choice is Michigan. Might be time to learn how to drive!

Random question, but have any of you considered the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine? Particularly their MSc Public Health and MSc Epidemiology programs. Their tuition is only around $30,000 for US citizens which is way cheaper than many of the top US schools, and the degrees are only one year rather than the traditional 2, but the thought of being in expensive London and under the completely different British education system makes me a bit hesitant .

I got an email saying that I got into my second choice, but OPUS still hasn't been updated.
Congrats! How long did it take from when they sent you an email that your app was sent to your second choice to when you received the acceptance email?

I think so. You can maybe try emailing the admissions. If they sent your app to your second choice, they are supposed to email you when that happens. Good luck to you! What programs did you rank?

I'm so scared to email the admissions people because I feel like they get these emails all the time and get annoyed. So all I can do is complain anonymously on an online platform. 😳

I did 1. Epi 2. Biostats. I also applied to UCLA and Colorado SPH like you did! I'm from the west coast so these schools are one of my top choices.
