MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know it's a little late but I think I'm going to apply to JU MSPH 😳 what was the turn around time for a decision for those of you who applied? 🙂

Hey everyone! I just checked the website for Boston (exploresph.bu.edu/FirstnameLastname/Landing) and it says I am accepted!!! On the website, did it notify you of any scholarship information? How do they contact you about scholarships and all of that?
Hello! Did you not receive an email? I did not even know about this website! Thank you for sharing!

Somebody from the Facebook page made a group chat for UNC- Chapel hill Health Behavior students. If anyone is interested let me know!

Hi everyone still waiting to hear back from HSPH -

The admitted students' schedule is available to view on a public page. Perhaps we will hear back before this Friday, and maybe even earlier for folks who applied to Epi. I'm as clueless as everyone. Maybe this can instill some hope!

Today would mark 6 weeks since I received the "routed for review" email from BU, and I have yet to hear from them 🙁 Anyone else in the same boat?

I sent a follow-up email at the end of January and was given a vague response. Tempted to send another follow-up email, but I feel like that would be too pushy.

I am in the same boat as you. I did send them an email this morning. I will update when I hear back!

My application went into review 1/29 and I read somewhere that decisions are sent within 3 weeks so I emailed them on 2/19 asking about my application status. They responded in less than 1 hour saying this:

"Thank you for your email! Your application went out for review on January 29th. We will make every effort to notify you of a decision within 5- 6 weeks of that date. If we have any questions for you as we review your application we will be in touch with you directly."

so maybe this week brings good news 😀

Me too, I havent heard anything either. I got the routed for review on 1/25 submitted my app on 11/25 and I emailed a few days ago and they told me that I would hear at the latest the beginning of March, I don't know if that is the same for everyone?

I'm in the same boat. It took them 2-3 weeks between getting the confirmation from them my app was complete and when my app was under review... I'm still waiting on a decision for health policy.

Did anyone's schools receive their SSN for their FAFSA? It seems school after school cannot process my FAFSA since it is missing the SSN and I hate the need to relay my numbers due to security reasons.

Do you guys think its worth reaching out to Columbia admissions via email? I applied 11/28 and haven't heard anything from them since 12/1 saying my application was complete. I applied for HPM and haven't gotten any interview request. I do find it odd that it's been radio silence given I applied before the priority deadline and have very good stats/ application overall.
If anyone's curious I emailed admissions and they just got back to me within an hour (!!!)

"Thank you for checking in. Your application is still under review by the department. When decisions are made, an email will be sent to you asking you to check your portal for status updates. Thank you for your patience! Please feel free to contact our office with any further questions."

What are my chances of getting in? I am getting nervous not hearing from BU and Emory. These are my stats. Let me know your true thoughts.
GRE- didn't take
GPA: 3.52
Major: BS Public Health
School: small liberal arts school in North East
Experience: an author (not main) on a published research paper, 5+ months working at Health Department, 4 months of PBH research leading up to Publishing of the paper, volunteer 8 hours a week at COVID-19 vaccination clinic (since January when it opened), other paid work in healthcare through undergrad, volunteering throughout college, Semester study abroad, international volunteer experience, 3 leadership positions in college clubs
Recs: Professor I published the paper with, previous employer, the advisor I had a close connection with through college
Accepted already: GWU, Drexel, WASHU, Penn State, Jefferson ( mostly applied for GH), got $ from 3 out of 5
BU: applied & verified 11/25, sent for review 1/25
Emory: applied and verified 1/29, went to department for review 2/5

- I know this is a stupid request but I am genuinely curious about what everyone thinks

You got it for BU. idk what concentration you doing though.

Good question and don't know what the answer is. I don't see a reason for schools to have your SSN...FAFSA needs it to verify your financial records and they use it to automatically pull your 2019 tax record (this was a choice and I selected it so I didn't have to dig up all my info and send it manually). I would enter your SSN into FAFSA so that you can get consideration for financial aid. If you don't want to be considered for aid (scholarships, work study, federal loans), then I wouldn't provide it.

Ive never had an issue with my FAFSA in undergrad. I thought our SOPHAS or something would have SSN already. I know someone mentioned they needed to provide the SSN as well but now a number of my schools be asking.

I was thinking that too... I thought we did as well, but can't remember. Maybe SOPHAS and FAFSA doesn't pass it on to the school, so that's why they're asking you again...

For people accepted to NYU with a scholarship, is the scholarship showing up in the Albert portal? Mine is only listed in the email and that worries me.

Hello! Did apply to Emory on 1/5 or did you get your "routed for review" email on that day? Did you get your decision by email or in the portal? What is your concentration? Congrats!

The dates I put in the parenthesis are the days I submitted my applications.
I never got a "routed for review" email. I think... I really didn't check my admission emails that much before I got 3 results in emails all at once on 2/3.
The concentration for all these schools are all either PopFam in MCH or Reproductive Health.

Sharing since a lot of people have been asking about JHU funding outside the MTS. I emailed the financial aid department and they forwarded it to the Epi Department!!! 😱 In my email, I expressed how grateful I was to be admitted and offered the MTS and that Hopkins was my top choice. I explained that I had been offered generous funding from other programs (I attached offer letters) and asked what opportunities there were to make Hopkins a more financially competitive option. This is the email I received from the Epi Department:

Hi, REDACTED.

I am reviewing your email forwarded to me from our Financial Aid office. Certainly funding is a big consideration when reviewing your options for graduate training. Our ScM program is a two year program during which you will choose whether to accept the tuition support of 25% for year 1 and 50% for year two or 75% for year two. Students usually work on campus in a variety of research positions up to 20 hours / wk for $18-22 hr which can allay living expenses. Additional funding through endowment support does come available as students enter the second year.

You might accept other offers if you are only considering finances or you might attend one of our Virtual Visiting Days to find out all of the other reasons students choose our program. I will say that our masters students frequently mention just how surprised they are by the access to faculty, resources at the school, and camaraderie of the student body and alumni.

Thank you, kindly.

I'm not going to lie, the response kind of rubbed me the wrong way. I wasn't optimistic that they would just give me extra funding, but the line "you might accept other offers if you are only considering finances" made me feel as though they were implying that I was being rude for even bringing the subject up. I'm aware that finances aren't the only factor in my decision, but it is certainly a significant one for myself and a lot of other people here. Am I reading too into this? I know they won't rescind my acceptance because of this, but I'm afraid I've spoiled my relationship with the department before I even accepted their admissions offer (which is very likely). Thoughts?

Edit: After sitting on their response for some time, I realize I definitely overreacted lol. It was one of those moments when you read something in the wrong tone and misinterpret the entire message. Already thanked them for their response and let them know they're still my top choice!

Y'alllllll i got into NYU for global health. haven't seen that concentration too frequently on this forum so let me know if you are going!!! I'm definitely highly considering because I'd be a dual degree student and have been accepted to the other program as well. SO so happy

I don't see it in Albert either. I went to the Financial Aid section and didn't see any awards. I wonder if it's only visible after you commit (and then it'll be activated)...

I wouldn’t worry about the way your email was perceived, many students have similar thoughts. You just need to reflect and decide what is the best choice for you. And congratulations on your acceptance to the top program in the world!

Thank you for this reassurance!

So I emailed UIC about financial aid and this is what they said:

"In terms of financial aid, there are several levels at SPH. Students are automatically considered for school level funding with the base application, no separate application is necessary. The program will contact you directly if there is an offer of aid with the admission, but that is relatively rare at the Masters level. To inquire if you are being offered any scholarships for the Epidemiology program, you can contact their Student Coordinator, *name redacted*

There are research, teaching, and graduate assistantships. These are highly sought because they usually include a partial tuition/fee waiver and a monthly stipend. They are hired directly by faculty members, so are rare for first semester Masters students. They are more common in the second semester and second year after you take the initial core courses and start networking with professors & advisors. Many positions are also posted on the UIC Job Board: Home."

welp that's disappointing.... anyways, whatever. they were like my fifth choice lol.
