MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

TLDR: Columbia SMS or Yale SBS??

Need help making a decision: to be transparent about my goals I am a premed but loved public health, wanted to do my MPH during my gap to get a real, immersive dive into public health before going into medical school. I am so so excited to be choosing between Columbia SMS, Yale SBS (those are my top two), BU, GWU, and UPitt. My only concern with Mailman is the curriculum is more rigid/structured than Yale's and Mailman seemed to have reservations about research opportunities whereas I want to have a heavy emphasis on research during my time as a grad student. Any advice would be helpful! I do not know my financial aid packages yet, but evaluating the two options without that information.
I was conflicted between JHU, Yale and Columbia as well. I am now leaning more towards Columbia for their connections with the NY City Government, research opportunities, and after talking to some professors and alumni in general. Good luck with your decision!

thinking about how i applied to UCLA 3 days after the priority deadline and the people who applied BEFORE then haven't even heard back. not expecting to hear back until June then at this point lol

I saw a post on gradcafe saying that all financial aid decisions for HSPH will be sent out by March 11th, does anyone know if there is any truth to this?

I have yet to get a decision from them and the 11th is tomorrow...😂

Anyone have any updates re columbia watilist? They say before May 15 but I know most of us only have until April 15 to commit to another program. If I get off the waitlist I'm going, but if not then I'm ready to commit to NYU. Killing me
I am in the same boat. Would rather not commit to another school and then find out afterwards that I got off the waitlist.

also in this limbo! is the decision date for Columbia also April 15? I feel like they'd start reviewing the waitlist after that 🙁

Good point. Was hoping that as some people will begin to decline their admissions offer they may start to accept people on a rolling basis but maybe they will just reevaluate after april 15. If anyone hears back before April 15 though keep us posted! good luck to you all <3

Yeah their decision date is April 15 as well. My only hope is that people start declining their offers before then, so they can take a look at the waitlist as soon as possible.

Rejected from GWU!

Just wondering about the April 15th deadline. So after we confirm our place in the program, do we only need to pay the deposit? Are there any repercussions for confirming and then ending up not going due to, for example, financial reasons or if there's another wave of COVID? A bit confused as to what the procedures are because I'm an international student.

While this is true- someone I saw applied waaay after the priority deadline and got accepted during the first round in January... so honestly it’s all random I feel like !! We will all find out soon enough 🙂

Rejected from Berkeley! But honestly I'm not surprised since I waited this long and knew deep down that I didn't belong there. But I am happy to say I can finally commit to the University of San Francisco (small but fits more into more lifestyle!) I've been a lurker these past few weeks, and I've honestly felt comfort and support through this journey of waiting from you all!

Hi all!
Has anyone received any financial aid from JHU? Have been accepted to the one year MPH program and wandering if I’m likely to get funding and if so how much. Obviously know it’s very dependent but trying to gauge what kinds of offers people are receiving.
I was accepted in 1/8 and didn't have anything posted for financial aid as of 3/2, though I did hear back about the Bloomberg Fellowship. In the admitted student session today they said financial aid awards and a lot of department funding are still pending.

Which campus? I also got accepted there 🙂 I haven’t seen anyone else apply there 😅

Hello everyone! I just wanted to quickly share my academic story so that it hopefully motivates anyone who may be hesitant to apply in future cycles because of their GPA:

As you can probably see in my stats below, I got a 3.2 GPA. This is very low. I struggled a lot during my first few years of college -- I had health issues I had to overcome and a lot of anxiety caused from juggling pre-med life and family life. This eventually led to me being academically dismissed during my 3rd year. I really wanted to stay motivated to go back to school ASAP so I chose to volunteer at a community health center. This was difficult to do because I was also working full-time, but I managed to make it work. 6 months and 3 summer classes later, I gained readmission. I came back, switched my major, and graduated after my 5th year. I even managed to complete a global health study abroad program! During my gap years, I did AmeriCorps and worked as a Quality Improvement Specialist. I'm so happy that I took some gap years because working-full time showed me that what I really wanted is a career in public health.

I applied to MPH programs being fully prepared to have to apply a second time. I thought that all these schools would reject me because of my academic dismissal...but they didn't. I'm incredibly grateful that they gave me a chance and I hope that they do the same for other future applicants with a similar story. We are more than just our GPA and our resilience highlights our potential as great leaders in public health.

Does anyone have any contacts of students in the ScM or MHS program at Hopkins? Preferably someone who was there pre-pandemic. Would love to connect with them and learn about their experience.

You can just hold your spot at your second choice by putting down the deposit, and if you get off the waitlist at your top choice you can always opt to accept there and forfeit the deposit! I think that’s what schools are probably expecting a lot of people to do who are on the waitlists.

Some people had success with asking for an extension to the April 15 deadline so idk maybe you could try that! Wouldn't ask for more than 1-2 weeks though.

Finally in at Brown!! My decision letter says I was awarded financial support by my program but when I go to the financial aid tab of the portal, there's nothing under 2021-2022... Any insights?

EDIT: Reading what others have said in the thread and I think I just need to wait for the financial aid email to come separately.
