MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For those who’ve heard from Emory, when did your application go under review? I applied for epi.
I applied Dec 17 and it was received by them and I got confirmation the next day that it was going for review. But I applied for GH so I know it's a different department that looks at my application. I hope you hear soon!

Im really surprised you got rejected from emory with your stats. Makes me wonder if I even have a chance with my 2.8.
I applied with a 2.9 gpa and it wasn't an issue for them. When I sent in a letter explaining my low gpa, they emailed back saying it didn't matter because they look at the applicant as a whole and if the direction, passion, and interest is there, then gpa doesn't really matter at that point.

Just got an acceptance to UC Berkeley MPH for IDV and was accepted to Columbia 2 year Epi MPH on Wednesday! What an amazing week! For everyone waiting, don't give up! Fingers crossed and hoping for a weekend of peace and rest as we all wait for more decisions in the coming weeks!

I got an email today about in progress courses listed on my transcript. I guess they are still doing reviews. I applied to the EHS department.

I believe you got that email today because you reached out to them via email yesterday morning.

Mine was routed for review on 1/8. But i applied for EH which is small. Epi probably has a lot of applicants that they will need to sort through.

What happened to Emory acceptances? I know several that got in but it's been radio silence since? Is there a pattern?
From last years thread, it seems like Emory sends out decisions on Thursdays (or i guess you may be able to check portal Wednesday night as well). So hopefully we hear back next week

does anyone know if there are more or less applicants this cycle because of covid
In the UCLA acceptance letter it says they received more applicants this year (I feel like schools say that every year tbh). But I’ve talked to a few adcoms at different schools who’ve said the same.

Just based off this information from the UNC website (if you click on the applications received tab) you will see that the number of applications received to date is 2000 higher than last year at the same time.

My professor who is on the admissions committee for the epi program at UCLA said they’ve had a huge increase in applications, by far the most they’ve ever had. Every school and program has seen an increase but MPH programs have seen an especially large surge in applications.

Hi All, I am currently a PhD candidate at an international university and finishing my degree soon. I am interested in MPH and applied through SOPHAS to only few schools. I got an acceptance at JHSPH, but without any financial aid or scholarship. I have some queries and would be happy if anyone could guide.
1. Can anyone please guide about external scholarships for JHSPH?
2. Can we contact the school for any request of some waiver or something or some RA (considering my research experience)?
3. I am also waiting for HSPH result, but not sure how competitive is the scholarship compared to JHSPH, any views on this.
TIA🙏
Wish you all good luck

You could contact Hopkins financial aid office and they can probably answer questions 1 and 2.

I just sent a personal email to the EH department at Emory and Columbia and ID department at Pitt. I thanked them for reviewing my application and mentioned my research interests. I hope they see that I am very committed to PH and maybe they will give me a chance.

Colorado contacted me to let me know they didn't receive a transcript from the school I studied abroad at.
Do schools typically need this info? Grades and courses for that semester are on my undergrad transcript, and the only way to get a copy of my transcript (even unofficial) from my host school is to physically pick it up... so that won't be happening, lol
They contacted me even though mine are on my US Transcript as well. I emailed the admissions department and they were really willing to work with me and adjust deadlines so I could get it figured out. I eventually was able to get my unofficial transcript through the program I studied abroad with.

Did anyone get any scholarships from Tulane and would be ok with sharing the amount? I got a little but I'd still have to take out a lot of loans in order to go. Curious about what everyone else has been getting.

Just looking for people's opinions on any of the MPH master program schools I listed below, positive or negatives of them, personal experiences, or any words of wisdom. I have not decided on a school and still waiting to hear back from a lot of them.

Hi where did you send the email? I’ve been looking for the email address of the Emory EH department

Did anyone get an email from UNC about financial aid? I got an email from them about it but haven’t received a decision about admission yet
I got that same email but was rejected from them over a month ago - I think it’s automated if you submitted your FAFSA to them.

Do we have to apply for merit separately from our application?
I see stuff about uploading docs for financial aid but not just merit based.

Any insight on emailing a school just to try to get my name out there/express my passion? I only have the generic admissions email and an email of one of the director of academic programs so I’m not sure emailing them will even make a difference? Also, I don’t want this to hurt my chances in any way 😅

You can try and ask if someone would be willing to have a phone call/zoom call with you to talk about their program. I did that a few months ago and sat down with a few schools’ admissions officers 1-1.

so i took some non-public health classes that count as electives towards my Public Health major/major gpa, but on SOPHAS i marked them by their actual subject (not as “public health” classes). so they’re not factored into my public health gpa on SOPHAS even though they would’ve boosted it. did i mess up by not counting them as public health classes? i thought it’d look weird if i marked a history class as “public health,” for example, even if it went towards my major.

my understanding was that if they were labeled public health then it would count as public health gpa. for example, I took an asian American and education class, so even though it was for my education minor, I labeled it as ethnics studies.

I had no public health GPA in SOPHAS and I’ve still been accepted to programs. I think you’re fine

My first choice is UTHealth, has anyone received acceptance and is planning on attending ?
Also, is there like a GroupMe or Facebook group for UTHealth ?

Hey, I got accepted to UTHealth. I'm about 80% sure that's where I'll attend. I don't think there's anything specifically for admitted students, but there's this FB group full of current students that I recently joined.

I think SOPHAS looks more at the course title to categorize courses. I took 2 public health courses with "public health" in the course code. The first was an introduction to public health course, but "public health" was not in the course title. Since it was in the course code and is informally called "intro public health," I labeled it as "public health," but SOPHAS changed it to "health" and counted it in my health science GPA. My second course counted in my public health GPA because "public health" was in the course title. So, I think, even if you listed your history course as public health, SOPHAS would have changed it to history unless it was like "history of public health."

I agree with what's already been said, though. A good grade is a good grade, so it probably won't impact anything too much!
