MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For anyone wondering, I emailed hopkins about financial aid applications and received this email response:

Thank you for your email. We will start reviewing applications in mid-March. We will contact you if we have any questions regarding your application. Our usual processing time is between 2-4 weeks. We will notify you when we have completed review of your application.

haha glad to know someone is on the same boat 🙂 fingers crossed next week is the week! im just exhausted and havent got a single acceptance or decision yet, ive even panic applied to like 4 other schools lol ill be happy with one acceptance at this point
Good luck to you, we got this!! Most of my friends who applied to Columbia last year heard back around Feb 7th. So I'd say it's not all over yet 🙂

After hearing back from GW back in Dec, I finally got a scholarship email! They offered me 15K total. I'm both so happy they offered and also am like "is this enough for it to be worth the GW price tag", haha.
Congratulations!! What concentration did you apply to at GWU? I was admitted to MCH in December and am yet to hear back on financial aid :/

Did they send out applications already for scholarships?

I had 5 rejections in a row before I got my first acceptance. you will be fine. my stats are pretty bad too.

Does anyone know if Hopkins offers additional financial aid besides the MTS? Even with the MTS, it's still a hefty price tag 😬
Agreed. They seem to offer grants and really good aid for undergrad students, but not so sure if the same applies for grad students. I got in too with the MTS scholarship but I don’t know if it will be enough on its own.

For those asking about hopkins financial aid, I don't know about scholarship applications, but I applied for financial aid (need-based), for which you need to submit your FAFSA (or if you're an international student, CSS profile) and supporting documents. I didn't receive an email to apply for aid, I just found the instructions on their financial aid webpage.

Did anyones sophas get verified in less than 2 weeks? I submitted my apps a couple days ago so I'm clearly veryyy behind you guys

I would say go to the cheapest option, as well. Right now that seems to be UNC, and luckily for you, UNC is a top public health program.

Loans are no joke, especially the unsubsidized, and if you get no aid from Yale, then I think it's a no-brainer. Especially if you decide to pursue a PhD afterwards, you will be making close to nothing on the PhD stipend while having to pay back those enormous loans. I personally don't think it's reasonable to go into incredible debt for an MPH especially due to the career salaries afterwards. Just my two cents!

I'm in the same boat cause I think I'll want to get a PhD after and the idea of loans frightens me, especially upwards of 20-30k+
Do you think the name of your school (for masters) matters when it comes to applying to Ph.D. programs?

Im pretty sure we will. Mass vaccinations will only continue to increase once they sort out the logistics.

I was admitted to MCH in January and haven’t heard anything

May i ask what webpage you found? Also, so you only filled out FAFSA correct? There wasn't anything else involved?

They are! And that’s why I’m so torn on whether Yale would be a better program for me since I love the research people are working on up there. I’m not sure how much of a difference 2 versus 15 makes
The US News rankings are based solely on peer review so I don’t know how much weight they really have. It mostly tells you the opinions of other people in the field but I’m not sure how much a dean or faculty member at one school would be able to speak to the quality of instruction or opportunities in a different program.

I had a professor who told me - so he went to columbia for his MPH - he says there is no such thing as an ivy league masters programs but says the name carries weight - probably bc of biases and stuff. I think it would be good to ask people in the field bc maybe people a little outside of the field will be impressed with names - but maybe in the field it's different? idk

This is very true I think! A lot of people I’ve talked to outside of public health don’t understand why I wouldn’t go to Yale. But within the field, I hear mixed reviews. Mainly to pick the cheapest school. I’m definitely waiting to hear on aid and that will probably be the deciding factor. I also feel like I could be so happy at either school, so I don’t feel like there’s a bad choice. It just feels like an enormous decision

I hope so!!! When did you apply / complete?
I was completed on 1/4, but they forgot to route me for review until 1/21. I’ve seen people who were routed for review around that time be accepted already :/

I agree with the statements. Even though a school say like NYU has a lower ranked PH program the name carries weight. Im deciding now between Tulane and NYU and leaning towards NYU. Tulane may be ranked well in PH but because of biases NYU might be the better choice. idk.

For those who got accepted to Yale, there is a note that scholarship information will sent within 10 days. Was that the case for many? If they did not get any info, does that mean there was no scholarship was given but one can still expect some financial aid?

I got my scholarship notice 9 days after my acceptance. I think if you don't hear back within 10 days, you should reach out Jen Farkas, the director of financial aid. She's pretty receptive so it wouldn't hurt!

WOW! Amazing news tbh. very happy for you.
Wow congratulations!!!!!
Thank you so much! This is actually a huge game changer for me because I am fortunate to already live with my family in the DC area, so that takes care of living costs. The cost of the program is basically cut in half. I think it's a no-brainer at this point. I doubt any school will come close to a better deal financially. I didn't think I would get very much aid from GW and they're pretty expensive so that's why I wasn't considering it very heavily. Now it seems to be my top choice!! Amazing how an email changed up my whole plan lol. I'm about 90% committed to GW now, but let's see what the other schools do!

It's been 2 weeks since I interviewed for Columbia HPM and no response yet. Anxiety has been at an all time high and it looks like we will not be hearing back this week. I think I have only seen like 2-3 people get accepted to the program already but this wait (and the interview process) is dragging on for wayyyy too long 😫😫

I got 3 acceptance letters all at once yesterday. Lol. UC Berkeley, Emory, UNC.
Waiting on the financial package letter and results from Columbia, Yale, Harvard.

Oh. I went on facebook and checked their incoming student groups. Yale group has 150 people. Given how many students they usually admit, I think there is still room for at least another 100. hahaha
