How are you guys planning to pay for school if anyone doesn’t mind answering? Mostly loans?

The thought of going $60k-$70k in debt is just a tough pill to swallow
I will be working full-time. The goal is to have a full time job lined up before I move and securing a graduate assistantship I started reaching out to departments to see if they have anything available.

I'm from California too, I want to try living in the snow for 2 years to see if I can put up with it long term. I have a feeling I'll hate it lol but it's worth a try!

As for a silly reason, Columbia became much less appealing to me when I found out Mailman is 5 miles from the main Columbia campus. Maybe it's because I missed out on a lot of my undergrad experience but I really want to be able to hang out on campus during grad school!
yeah i dont get why its so far

work and GA? is that possible?

gwu says they’ll do a financial appeal but want my other letters so i hope these other schools will pull through already

been wondering and feeling the same - the thought of taking out loans really stresses me out so i'm trying to do everything possible to avoid that! and/or minimize the loan that i have to take out if i do.

i've been living at home ever since i graduated in 2018 and working full-time so i've been able to save up a lot of money. i also plan on staying part-time at my job to help with living expenses. not sure if that'll really be enough but we'll see. still waiting to hear about finaid from the schools i've been accepted to so planning to run all my calculations soon.

Omg I really? I hope I can get something from them I also need to hear back from others about financial aid too

yeah but i’m limited by time and so i have bu to leverage but i’m not sure if i’ll get in or scholarship from other schools

Columbia is currently moving down on my list because I found out their MPH grads don’t get a hood for graduation, just plain old cap and gown 😂 For some reason I’m attached to having a hood when I graduate with a masters
Omg how did you find this out? I know it shouldn't be that big of a deal but that's so disappointing to hear haha

Yup, I would say mostly loans. Thankfully with programs that are structured like JHU's, the second year is a full time job, so you're only really "not making money" for 8-9months, but even then, you could work part-time as an RA or something

Yeah I only have BU scholarship to use too so hopefully we hear some more good news soon! Is there a deadline for their appeal process or just by their commit date?

they gave me a deadline but it’s like the deadline is like the date they will get back to me so I have to give them the letters before then so I emailed to clarify when they need the letters by

How long after your BU application was complete & sent for review did you guys hear back? Mine ~finally~ got sent for review today (even though I applied Jan 13th)

Hi! Is the portal accessible once you're accepted? Not sure how to get to it. I haven't heard any from them since my app was ready for review (11/30). I applied to the same program, I'm nervous now. 😵
Hi there! the "portal" is the same place you submitted the grad app directly to berkeley. Login

doesn't really give u much info before theres a decision

i got the app complete email on 1/28, and i just got in today 2/11! so about 2 weeks, i’m sure you’ll be hearing good news really soon 🙂

GOT ACCEPTED TO JHU for MHS IN EPI (Can you tell it's my top choice :"D)))!! 😊

Also, I got the MTS scholarship (75% reduction in 2nd yr of program), and I applied after the priority deadline!! (I though March was the priority deadline :"D so it was me being a dum-dum and I was afraid I wouldn't qualify, but apparently I was worrying for no reason!!) AHHHHH

I saw a video that included people in the graduation regalia but I didn’t see a hood so then I went onto a deep dive on the website to find their graduation ceremony guidelines! It’s a bit excessive of me

for those accepted to BU (congrats btw!), how long did it take to receive the official acceptance email?

For those of you who are still finishing up undergrad, did you upload your updated transcript to SOPHAS? If so, do you know if schools take a look at your updated transcript?

I applied to NYU (SBS) and UNC (EQUITY) on November 17th and submitted the UNC supplemental November 27th. Would it be appropriate to email them regarding my decision or at least a timeline if I don't hear back this week? These are the last 2 schools I am waiting to hear from.

Oh okay! I checked and you’re right, not really much info on there. Thank you and congratulations!!!

Wowow congrats!!!

If you mean for end of fall term grades (ex fall 2020), I asked all of the schools I applied to, and most said not to worry about it. UIC said I could email them my unofficial transcript. Columbia encouraged me to. Yale said I could if I wanted to, but they said they may look at my application and make a decision before it arrived. For both Columbia and Yale, I got decisions before SOPHAS received and uploaded my updated transcript. They really only need updated transcripts proving we graduated.

About how long did it take people to hear back from Emory? I'm feeling discouraged 🙁
Don't feel discouraged! I applied 11/6 and didn't get any word from them after the confirmation of receipt until January 27th, when they told me I was getting sent to my second choice (which wound up being a better fit). After that it took about a week and a half to get my decision!

I think Emory does a good job of considering the programs you're interested in and accepting you to the one that is the best fit for you! Just take a deep breath and remember this year is seeing a record number of applicants, especially in public health. You're gonna get your good news soon enough!

Columbia just notified of a grant I am going to receive but disappointed of how little it is 😢
Well better than nothing I guess, but oof Columbia is expensive! Did they email you about it or was it in the portal?

Speaking of which, what're y'all's terrible/laughable reason for choosing a school? I'll go first.

Emory vs. Columbia vs. BU
- i refuse to drive (as mentioned above)
- and i want cute hallmark vibes snow but not like rudolph reindeer burning nose vibe snow

can u tell i'm from california?
As much as I hate to admit it, I'm definitely comparing schools' campus rec centers. I also am looking for somewhere I can bike to school because my car is... driveable but not a pleasant time.

I also applied to EQUITY early (submitted UNC supplemental by 11/17) and noticed that I was routed to my second choice in SOPHAS a couple weeks ago so I reached out to see UNC to see if this meant I had been fully rejected from EQUITY and received this response on 2/1:

Thank you for reaching out. We do not need any additional information from you at this time. We are still in the process of reviewing applications. Due to the increased number of applications, you many not received a decision until about 4-6 weeks from now.

I think it's fine to reach out but you might receive a similar response!

Did anyone apply for Hopkins Online/Part-Time MPH with the Nov start date? I haven't heard anything at all about that one and have no idea what the timeline for decisions is like.
