MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I’m really wondering if columbia will ever release my decision lol. Probably still have berkeley as my numb 1 b/c i love the bay area but i just wanna frickin know!!!

I missed the deadline for the application so no LOL
It was the first thing I applied to. I was terrible at applying back then. haha. Reason why I didn't get it...
A few months later now I'm much much more fluent in the application language. I might try again with it if ever I want to apply to a PhD at Stanford. 😁
Hope we both get into the program!!

I did also! Nothing since my application was routed for review over a month ago. I also applied to epi!
i still haven’t heard back from Emory (i applied 1/5 for epi) 🙁 anyone else relate?
Same boat...Also Epi (global). I guess that department is slower than others?? but it's been like 2 months for me :/ kinda ridiculous.

Applied: Yale, Columbia, NYU, GWU, BU, Dartmouth
Accepted: Columbia (2/2), GWU (2/5), NYU (2/10), BU (2/12)

I got a rejection email from BU on 2/10, on 2/11 they emailed me saying it was a mistake and my app was still in review, and 2/12 I got in + a 25% scholarship. There is hope for those of you waiting (and even rejected...lol)!

For people interested in Emory or from Atlanta, do you think a car is needed during grad school? Are any of you bringing your cars?

Just received my acceptance to BU + 35% $$!!! But also got an email from GW that they aren't giving me any money so I guess I can cross them off my list!

Now the only school I am waiting for is Columbia after that mishap..... c'mon Columbia!!!!!!!
Congratulations!! Which program did you apply to at BU? 😀

Both interested in Emory and from Atlanta. I would recommend having a car! Atlanta has public transportation but its quite limited in my opinion. I feel like especially for Emory the campus isn't like right in the city so a car would be your best bet for getting around

Ugh, I applied to GLEPI too, but my app was routed on like 1/22. This is not what I wanted to hear 😥

In at UMich HMP!!!!!!!

App routed: 1/4
Interview: week of 2/8
Official letter: 2/12 (recommendation for application was noted on portal 2/10

Any word on scholarship and financial aid information?

Guys, i need help deciding between GWU and NYU ( still waiting for columbia.) Got into other schools but these are my top 3. Lets say i dont get columbia. Which program is better academically?
Nyc and DC are great locations (for global health). Im leaning towards nyu because of the benefits internationals students get (to work 3 years after grad in the US even without a non-stem program, whereas GWU doesnt count my program as STEM (so 1 year to work) after grad in the US.

nyu's global health program seems a little generalized to me .. you dont really focus on one area, whereas gwu you do!
Help?
I committed to NYU for epidemiology. Honestly, I feel a lot of public health employers have biases toward certain schools. NYU PH program is relatively new, but the school itself has a worldwide reputation. There are a lot of opportunities in both cities. I feel like NYC is a major PH mecca and can offer plenty of internships and jobs.

Congrats to fellow NYU acceptances! Saw mine earlier today for HPM too and just caught up in here. FYI anyone else waiting, scholarship was mentioned in the acceptance email!
SOPHAS verified 1/20, they emailed 1/21 to confirm my app was complete, decision today 2/12.

Congrats Emory scholarship recipients! I'm hoping for REAL if they announce more in March...?

I am still waiting on these schools:
Berkeley (11/16), Yale (11/25), USC (11/30), Columbia (11/16), Brown (11/25), University of Maryland (11/25), Vanderbilt (12/1), UCLA (11/16)
All are for Epidemiology.
Crazy how the schools I made sure to apply earlier than the deadline are the schools I am waiting the longest.
Also waiting on UMD.

I’m contemplating. I don’t want to have to ship my car from SoCal but I might have to
I was thinking about this too. The current plan if I end up at Emory is to rent a car to drive across the country with my mom to move my stuff rather than have to ship stuff. I was looking at apartments and there are a couple located within walking distance of grocery stores and a short ride away from Rollins. If I need a car, I'll just rent a Zipcar or whatever other service. I remember one apartment had a Zipcar lot right there. If I end up needing a car more regularly, I'll lease one short term if I'm not sure where I'll be after graduation...

What are some biases you've heard? Could you share a little?

yikes...UMich just sent me my financial aid award and it's not looking too good...just a bit of work study and a ton of unsubsidized loans... *sigh* I really liked that program. Not worth the debt though. probs gonna turn them down 🙁

What is a normal amount of debt to go into for grad school? I have no loans from undergrad, but just want to know what is a reasonable amount of debt is when choosing a school?
It is a difficult question to answer because most grad programs are research focused and they typically waive tuition in return for work. Given that MPH is a professional graduate program the opportunities are fewer since the profession NEEDS the degree. However, people throw around the debt accrued should not exceed 1 year salary in the intended field post-graduation. That salary depends on the concentration of MPH but for epi in my city the starting salary is $60-70k a year so with that predicted salary it would mean your grad program should preferrably not exceed $30-35k a year in tuition.

These posts are making me kind of nervous because Emory is a strong top 2 for me and I don't drive 😭😬
What's your top choice? (If you don't mind me asking). You have some amazing schools to choose from so I'm just curious 😀

I think this is just from the FAFSA and aid! It’s not the scholarship award from your department, that’s what I’ve been hearing at least. I also received my “financial aid” and it was just about the loans I could get!

oh good that's a relief lol. Thanks, hopefully there's more to come then!

I don't know what the answer is here, but here's how I'm thinking about it in terms of the financial planning:
Calculate cost of expected tuition for the 2 years (for MPH)
Research housing options and take an avg $/month (depends on whether you plan to rent a studio or have 1-2 roommates in a 2-3bd apt)
Add cost of living (groceries, eating out, bus pass)
Books - couple hundred maybe per semester?
Subtract what you have saved up

Research an entry level job you might potentially be able to get after graduating for the city you want to work in. I would use a salary on the lower end just to see what the "worst case" scenario is to get a good picture of how long it would take to pay off the difference from above. You'll have to factor in rent and cost of living that eats up some of your salary too.

Can someone commiserate with me over how expensive Michigan is? Even in-state. For reference, I'm a CA resident and Berkeley's MPH tuition + fees are $14K/year in-state. Michigan's are double that.

Michigan is the first school to prepare my financial aid package and I can't get over the COA, and how much $$ I'd have to pay even after the federal loan max 🥺

I've been doing my research on Emory since it's a top school for me too. Honestly, there's enough stuff nearby in terms of necessities (grocery stores, Walmart, restaurants) that you can get by without a car (I think). If being able to go out and have fun around the city is important, then you'll want a car; the area around Emory isn't like NYC... During the school year, hopefully a fellow student wouldn't mind having you tag along to go out!

So to people who have gotten scholarships from UMich... is it a separate notice from the financial aid ?? This seems to be a shared sense of confusion right now lol

Hi! I came on here to see if everyone else was also getting these emails. Like someone else said, the "official" award notice that went out tonight is just federal aid from FAFSA. If you haven't heard yet via email about financial aid beyond that, don't lose hope! UMich offered me a scholarship that wasn't listed on my "official" award summary 🙂

I think that this is separate from scholarships! But it is insanely expensive... It made me sick tonight looking at everything I’d had to pay even after loans. If i don’t get any scholarships from mich i won’t know what to do

Thank you for clearing this up. I was extremely overwhelmed and stressed abo it this tonight!!!

Does Berkeley offer an easy path for instate tuition in your second year like UNC offers? I heard that as long as you have NC driver's license, rental agreement and register to vote in NC, you are pretty much guaranteed instate tuition second year.

Yes, scholarships are definitely a separate notice from financial aid. I got accepted into UMich for HBHE on 12/10. Received my scholarship package in an email titled "Scholarship Package for the University of Michigan School of Public Health" on 1/20. I also received that financial aid notice today packed with loans. Hopefully you hear back about scholarships soon!
