MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just heard back from Johns Hopkins MHS in epidemiology with MTS Scholarship!

Edit:
SOPHAS verified: Nov 30
Email from JHU saying application is under review: Nov 30
Acceptance: December 3rd (after 7 days)
Wow that was fast. Congrats!!

Columbia just sent me an (automated?) email that they have not received my resume or my personal statement even though I was verified on 11/30. Is there anything I can do besides wait for SOPHAS to send them the materials?

I am presuming that it was an automated email since I have this message on my applicant portal and the only thing missing is my resume from SOPHAS, which is already there -

"We are currently experiencing technical issues bringing supporting documents into our system from SOPHAS. As we continue to correct these errors, your Checklist may not accurately reflect your submitted documents. Our team is working diligently to correct this issue, and plan to a resolution no later than November 2nd. No action is required."

Check and see if you have the same thing on your portal as well.

I don't think it is automated. I submitted 12/1 and I was verified on 12/2, and on 12/5 they said they received all my materials. You should check your SOPHAS portal to make sure all the materials are there! 🙂

Just got into GWU for epi, so excited!

Congrats on your acceptance! I have similar stats and research interests to you, and was wondering if you ended up submitting a GRE score ? If yes, can I ask what it was? Currently sitting at a GPA around yours due to a medical diagnosis, but did do post-bacc work and explained what happened in my personal statement.

I got into GWU today! I'm really really excited, and it's all starting to sink in!

For those who got into JHU, how long did it take to hear back? I missed the priority deadline, 🙁 but I sent in my app anyway.

Hi guys. Seeking some advice on whether or not to report my GRE score or if I should try again? My first attempt is listed below: 151Q/163V/6AWA. I retook the GRE a few days ago and earned a 152Q/158V/ pending AWA. My nerves got the better of me and I know that affected my performance. GRE scores are optional for most of my programs, but I was really hoping to offer something to offset my 2.6 GPA from undergrad. I had an undiagnosed medical condition for most of my college career, but did do ~two years of post-bacc work resulting in a 3.8 GPA. I addressed my academic deficiencies in my personal statement and at least one letter writer addressed it as well.

My question: given my situation, should I send my GRE scores (or whichever you think is strongest)? Or will my low quant score only hurt my chances? Or, thirdly, should I risk having my application reviewed in January just to retake the GRE for the third time? I know my metrics really suck and have low expectations for some of my dream schools *cough* JHU *cough*, but am hoping at least one place will take me.

Undergraduate School/School type: Public university in CA
Undergrad GPA/Post-Baccalaureate GPA: 2.79/3.82
Major/minor: Environmental Toxicology/Anthropology
Grad GPA (if applicable): N/A
Grad studies (if applicable): N/A
GRE(including date taken): 151Q/163V/6.0AWA-- not reporting yet; am seeking opinions on whether scores would hurt my applications. I know my quantitative score is pretty mediocre and can't say much other than it was by far, not what my practice tests had predicted. 🙁

If you’re applying for Epi concentrations, I wouldn’t submit GRE scores as your quant is under the 50%. From your description, it looks like you have research experience that is probably more than suitable in a “quant experience” question. To me, your GRE quant score would be undermining your professional experience.

Congrats on GW! For Hopkins, I SOPHAS program apps were verified on 10/15 and I received my acceptance from Hopkins on 11/24. It usually depends on the program and department that you are applying to for your degree.

Did anyone hear back from Yale yet?
I was verified on 12/1 for Yale. A few days later I received an email from Yale confirming that my app was complete and was under review. Later that day I received an email from the Office of Admissions Director reaching out to personally thank me for applying to Yale. Then a day or two later they sent me a link to Yale's Students' Page. That was all. Nothing else.

My last letter of rec for Yale was submitted 11/26. I also received the email from the Admissions Director soon after that, but hadn't received the app complete & under review email. So I sent them an email yesterday letting them know everything had been completed two weeks ago and got the app under review email within an hour of that. Same thing with GW. 🙄

Hi y'all. I paid for SOPHAS to do the transcript entry since I had two schools during undergrad and I just realized last night that I am missing a full course from my first year of college on my verified transcript. It wasn't relevant to public health, but it did change my GPA a bit. Weirdly, it was included in the number of hours. I emailed SOPHAS, but UNC, Yale, and Brown are already verified for me. Does this matter a lot? I also sent my transcript through SOPHAS, so everyone should see it.

I've been keeping up with this thread and have been meaning to post my stats / plans for a while. I'm not really sure how many programs to apply to - especially since I've heard things might be a bit more competitive this year with COVID (people deferring from last year and more people applying because lack of jobs and increased interest in public health). Right now I am planning on applying to 6-10 programs (listed at end).

Hi! Thanks for your feedback. I'm applying to social/behavioral sciences tracks. I decided not to send my GRE scores to Columbia and UPenn. Harvard, UC Davis, and BU won't consider the GRE at all so I lucked out in that regard, but haven't decided the best course of action for JHU and Yale yet.

My rule of thumb is that if you get above 75%Q/75%V that should be a good reason to send!

Yes, I got an email from them the day I submitted my supplement that it was received (12/2). Maybe you should double check that your supplement is complete on the portal? Good luck!

Hi,. I am a surgeon with interest in global surgery. I am applying for global health/ public policy MPH.Have applied to U Washington, U Berkeley, Hopkins, Harvard, Yale. considering Yale, UNC. Any other programs to consider?

You should check your email inbox again. Once you hit Submit to turn in your Supplemental app, there should have been an automatic reply sent immediately to your inbox to acknowledge your Supplemental app submission. There are 2 things you can do:

1. Go to your inbox. In the Search box, type UNC. Look to see whether that email is there. Look for a message with the title "Thank you for submitting your UNC-Chapel Hill Supplemental Application".

2. If you don't see that message there, you should log into the portal. A copy of your supplemental app should be there in the portal.

Of course, you can always reach out to UNC admissions office for help.

Wish you the best of luck.
Thank you! I ended up finding it.

congrats!!! When did you submit your app? Waiting to hear back from them 😳
Thanks!! I submitted 11/19 and received a completed/received email from them on 11/23.

Can anyone comment on what types of things they included in their Yale proof of quantitative ability 5 page document? For context, I'm applying to the EMD MPH.

Used 1 page for unofficial GRE scores, 1 page for a poster, and trying to see if I can figure out how to include a SQL project or if that is even worth doing...

I received an interview to Dartmouth today. I'm applying to the Executive MPH program. I don't remember reading that this was a requirement. Has anyone had an interview. Any expectations?
I also wasn't expecting an interview as part of the application process.

Congrats! When did you apply/get verified?
Thanks! Applied on 11/24, spoke with program director on 12/9 (he told me I was already accepted at this point, he just hadn't put the info in on the portal)! Status update came in this morning (12/14) Feel free to PM if you have any other questions!

For those currently in school/who have applied while still finishing a semester or degree – do we update our semester grades (ex Fall 2020 grades) in SOPHAS? Or is this something we report right to programs? In the SOPHAS Academic Update FAQ section, they said it was available June-August, so I'm a little confused about what to do.

I just applied to UT Health Science Center at Houston (Houston Campus) for epi
I did a virtual session today. Although it's not ranked as high as a lot of the schools typically mentioned here, it's tuition is pretty competitive for out of state and very low for in-state. Seems to have a lot of great practicum areas and options (for epi). One thing that is bittersweet is that since it has multiple locations, you may have a class where a professor is located in another city, and they're broadcasted to you live instead of in-person. Hope this helps!
Hey. Have you heard back from UT-Houston yet?

Has anyone heard back from GW and about how long did it take?? Also congrats to everyone that has received an acceptance!

Got my first acceptance so thought I should do this now!

I'm also wondering about this! It doesn't seem like there's a place in SOPHAS to do this, so I'm thinking of sending my updated unofficial transcripts to each individual program.
