MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm curious if anyone is applying to Stanford's MS in epidemiology and clinical research? Their admissions timeline is very late compared to other MPH programs...Seems like I would have to make my final decision for other MPH programs (by 4/15 for most schools) before hearing back from them.

Does anyone know that paying the deposit by 4/15 means an irreversible decision to commit to the school?
Not applying to the program. As for paying your deposit and committing to a school, it's actually more common than people think. Yes, if you put in your deposit, it's more than likely nonrefundable and it is a commitment. However, if you think about it, a lot of schools really start pulling from the waitlist after the enrollment deposit deadline. I've also read in past forums that schools will send more scholarship money to some accepted (but not declined) students after the deadline. Just going off of personal knowledge, I've had multiple friends/family pulled from waitlists literally week before the start of school. At the end of the day, this is a business for them, they want to get as many students and as much money as possible.

I would say if you're going to do that, are accepted and 100% sure you're going to that school, decline the other offers so that someone else can have the spot/ funding.

How long does Columbia usually take to send out decisions after conducting an interview?

Does anyone who’s been accepted to a JHU MSPH program know how long it takes to receive the financial aid package? I looked on their website and it seems the financial aid portal requires an ID for first time access, and I haven’t gotten an email from them containing it.

Thanks!

We won't hear back until March about financial aid. I received my acceptance letter on 1/5 and I just received an email to set up my financial aid portal on 2/4.

Thank you for your help🙏! Lol guess I’ll just worry about it and ignore all my other work until then

Would these offers be in addition to the Master's Tuition Scholarship (not sure which departments offer that, but the Epi dept offered me one with my acceptance letter)?

If I applied to a school 11/13 and still haven’t heard any updates (besides that it was sent for review 12/14) but other people who applied later than me have heard back starting in January would it be too early to reach out to the school and see what happened?

The deposit is non refundable regardless. You could techniquely commit to one school and then decide to go to another. However that probably looks really bad on you
I have a friend who committed to one school and paid his deposit and everything, found out weeks later that he got into his top choice school, and decided to go to the top choice school because it was the best fit for him. It was totally fine, and he's been employed for a couple years now at a top consulting firm and it didn't ruin his life.

While, it may not look great on you to do something like this, if you write a good message to the program about it (e.g., other program is a better fit for your career goals, better choice financially, etc.), then they have no choice but to understand. It's possible it could burn a bridge with that school so keep that in mind but realistically, I doubt anyone would remember or honestly care that much, or even know outside of the admissions committee. If they're that petty, do you really want to be connected to them later? Just my thoughts!

I just got into Hopkins MHS program! Does anyone know if there's a big difference between MPH and MHS?

The MHS is if you have a specific area of interest and want to go more towards the route of an academic research career. Here's a breakdown from JHU's website:

i've asked and dont really get a response

It doesn't hurt to ask! I inquired about my UIC application because it had been about two months and I hadn't heard anything. Just a few days later someone was in contact + then an acceptance!

Did you just contact the admissions office by email?

I don't know for certain, but I received the MTS from my department and I still received the email. So I am hoping that it would be in addition to it. I can reach out and ask!

Has anyone received financial aid or scholarship awards from Tulane yet? I submitted the addendum the day they finally finished site construction, but I haven't heard anything in almost two weeks.
I was notified i got a 12k scholarship for my first year in my acceptance letter!

i agree with this. You could just ghost them and they would never know what school you went too.

Wait, I just found out about the Gibson portal
So I tried to enter and it just gives me a message telling me to log out when I'm done with services that require authorization, there's nowhere else to click. I've tried different browsers and everything- anyone else having this problem?

YES!!! Gibson has never worked for me and I got accepted almost 2 months ago!

Also for anyone still waiting to hear from BU, my personal URL with my acceptance actually has a "23" after my name if that helps anyone!

Got an email from HSPH titled - "Greetings from ODI". I thought it was decision 🙄 What a torture!!I
I applied to HSPH in the MPH 65 program for health policy and DIDN'T get an email from the ODI office today AHHHH!! I hope it's not a bad sign?!?!!? (I am an international student of racialized background)

I just declined my seat. I feel like those of you who got in should try to negotiate for more with your scholarship. It's ridiculous they cost almost as much as BU and give way less.
Yeah it’s definitely a crumb compared to what the cost is.. I’m just waiting on Emory’s offer and BU’s acceptance (hopefully) so I can ask them to make a counter offer if not then I’ll be declining too! 😅

Has anyone gotten a scholarship and financial aid information from Columbia or know how frequently they distribute funds? I got 30% BU and 75% MTS Hopkins but GW nothing hoping Columbia is generous. Also, does Hopkins give more than the 75% second year once you accept? I got an email from them last week from [email protected] about finalizing your financial application by March 15 for optimal consideration (does that mean that there's more scholarships than just the 75% off the second year? And do you have to accept admissions to be considered for that?)

Deciding between Hopkins and Columbia MHA right now.

I would email the admissions office.
