MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Omg. Your brilliant stats! Best of luck to you. You got a full scholarship from Emory. 🙂
Rejected by UWashington for Health Services and Policy! Just in case people were looking for when their decisions were coming out. I'm more of an East Coast than a West Coast person anyway 😉 Congrats to anyone who was recently admitted

Any of you strongly against roommates? There’s just something about living with a complete stranger that doesn’t sit well with me.
I live alone now and love it, but with moving to a city far away from my family where I don’t know anyone, I’m not sure living with roommates is a bad idea for me. Plus COA where I’m probably going to end up is insane so I’m not sure I can even afford to live alone

At first i wanted to live alone - i shared an apt w six people once. but living alone in a completely new city, I think it would be nice to have a roommate i’d be down for a 2 bedroom situation but not more. i think roommates can be good if it’s just a good roommate it can just be risky a stranger

Personally, I'm fine with house/flat-mates just not ROOMmates haha. But my biggest recommendation for anyone moving to a new city for grad school is to check out the Facebook housing groups for that city! I'm pretty familiar with the NYC and DC ones, and I know there are always so much better deals than you would find on Streeteasy, Zillow, etc. but the FB listings are generally less suspicious than Craigslist ones. Especially recommend checking out all the university housing FB groups in that city (even if you are a Columbia student, for example, moving to NYC, join the NYU one!) - the university groups also feel a bit safer since it's mostly other students in their 20s!

I can feel all your fingers frantically refreshing your Harvard's portals every 1/1000 secs. This could be a public health issue. 🤣

After we are through with the app process and start the program, perhaps we all can do an intervention on tendonitis in hand for mph applicants. For now, perhaps we can get a softball to queeze, to exercise our hands to strengthen our grip 🤣

Btw, congrats to those who got accepted to Harvard.

Congratulations
Accepted to Harvard MPH 45 Global Health....wow. I'm speechless. This better not be a Columbia mistake! Thank you all SO much for your kind words of support. I agree with some of the comments people made about being nervous for the outcomes of other....I feel very connected to your acceptances as well!
!!! This is amazing!!!

My dream is to have a one bedroom apartment to myself! I’ve spent the last few years living in some of the most expensive places in the country so I’ve always had to have roommates. I’ve had mostly good experiences but I would love to have a space of my own.

Plus I want to start fostering rescue cats again so a 1b1b would be optimal for that 🙂

And just saw my financial aid — received a 25% scholarship for Harvard based on merit and need!
Congrats!! How did you access your financial aid info? Was the offer in your email/decision letter?

I'm not opposed to roommates. I wouldn't mind living with 1-2 other people as long as we have separate bedrooms/bathrooms at least and respect eachother's privacy. Ideally I would hope they're grad students at the same school, even if they're not public health students (though I would prefer fellow MPHers!). I agree with others that as an introvert in a whole new city, it's good to have someone with you, at least in the same age range with common interests. One requirement for a future roommate would be that they have to like south asian food lol AND BE VERY COVID CONSCIOUS!!!! That's kinda my biggest concern rn haha

They gave us this address. They told us that the director advised people to reach out if they have waited too long.

Thanks again for your advice, I finally emailed Mary Keefe and she said I should hear back in 7-10 days! So nervous.

It weirds me out to think these decisions, made by 2 or 3 strangers, have such enormous implications for our lives and our futures. Even beyond our education and career paths, so many people meet their spouses or lifelong friends in grad school 😳 Hopefully we all end up where we belong!

Updating because today I got accepted to UW (health services) and received $21K scholarships/grants from GW!

Still no word from Harvard 🙃

Hi everyone! Just putting this here for data and so anyone applying to these schools can ask questions in the future! Good luck to us all!

1.25 years postgrad as lead researcher running all anesthesia-related research at a large hospital. 40 hours patient interaction/week, experience with the IRB side of research, 1 publication, and a third place prize from presenting at an international Anesthesia conference.

Anyone having luck by refreshing the Harvard portal every second???🤣 Good luck to everyone and congrats to those who have heard! (still waiting to hear Harvard-65)

Did anyone who applied to Harvard MPH-45 Health & Social Behavior hear back?? 😳

hi all, i've been lurking on this thread but finally am posting. my plan is to get my mph before medical school and i'm wondering what matters more to med schools, program ranking or program name. for example if I got into emory (ranked 5) and northwestern (ranked 30) where would I be better off in preparation for medical school. please share any thoughts/commentary, i appreciate you all 🙂

Getting really really worried about Harvard. Praying that they're still sending out acceptances for the SM 80 in Epidemiology.
Nobody has posted on here yet that they heard back from Harvard SM80. Why worry? Have you heard anyone else getting decisions for SM80?

following!

Hey, I am glad that you took the advice to contact her. I really want to see you get accepted. You got this.

Has anyone been to the 1-on-1 Admissions Q&A with Mary Keefe (director of admissions) or Office Hours with Becca Melnick at Yale? I'm tempted to register for one and ask about the status of my application. Any suggestions/past experience with that? Appreciated!

I believe with MPH, you mostly get what you put into it. Emory and Northwestern are both good schools, in long run I think it matters more what you accomplish while in school and what you do with the degree that matters the most to admission committees.
Go where is the cheapest and try not to add to that medical school debt as much as possible.

While living alone someday sounds nice, I've pretty much accepted that for the cities I'm looking at, I'm going to need roommates to make it more affordable/need less loans. I'm also quite introverted so sharing a room is out of the question for me as I need alone time otherwise I get wildly irritable and overall unpleasant to be around. Also moving to a new city, I think it will be nice to maybe have someone to explore a bit with! I've lived with random roommates before and barring any true "roommates from hell" I think it's fairly easy to be courteous and respectful, make small talk every once in a while or maybe watch a movie together, but still do your own thing for the most part. My current roommate and I barely knew each other when we moved in together and now we're good friends and have been living together for almost two years!

Seems like no more new posts about Harvard. So probably they’ve sent all admissions? Still haven’t heard anything yet. So nervous.

I just searched "Harvard" and scrolled down to that one SM Epidemiology acceptance: harvard • thegradcafe.com

Really really really hoping there's still a chance for me and us all!
Thanks! I think someone just posted on there they got into a 45 credit program there. Looks like more decisions will come out hopefully! Best of luck 🙂

I did one with Becca. She's pretty easygoing. Go ahead and schedule one with her if you have more questions than just checking the status. 🙂

I don't think so. They probably just started sending things out. We can give them some time.

Most of us had to interview! For me, it was a conversation with two interviewers that lasted less than 30 minutes. I came away from it with mixed feelings even though it was fairly casual, but I ended up getting accepted!
I have an interview next week! What type of questions do they ask?

LOL I just emailed. If it affects how they view me then I'm not sure what to say. I think it's reasonable if I paid a processing fee and spent my time on the application to ask for an update. I was not really concerned but a school I was accepted to said I need to give them my denial or acceptance by early April and I want to ensure I have an ample amount of time to make that decision since I will likely be moving to a completely different state in the next 6 months.

I had a one on one meeting with Mary Keefe! She was super kind and patient and let me ask all kinds of questions - we spoke for about half an hour. I met with her on a Monday and received my decision on a Wednesday 🙂
