MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
That is great! I guess I just have to keep waiting. I am getting nervous it's been so long! What program are you leaning towards and why?
Don't be afraid to email and check in with them about application status, its ok to do it if you feel you've been waiting too long.
I am leaning towards Emory, mainly because tuition wise with my scholarship, it's the most affordable option. Also higher ranked. I got REAL so I can work and keep building experience while I'm there. I also just feel ready to move out of the DC area, I've been here my whole life and I think it's time for a change. ATL's cost of living isn't bad at all. And the weather is great too, I hate the cold lol. My only major concern with Emory was that I felt I'd be missing out on the DC jobs and opportunities, which are more appealing to me than Atlanta's. I heard people mention USAID and that's where I dream to work. But I can always come back to DC over the summer and try to get some cool global health internships/practicum experience, or just come back after graduating. I'm willing to sacrifice the whole DC location aspect mainly bc I know I'll probably be happy with a job in Atlanta too!

They haven't even sent out all acceptances yet but all funding has been awarded? Guess I won't wait too eagerly for a possible acceptance this week or next then if I already know it will be with no scholarship. :/

I am guessing that it's all funding for all the decisions have been made - there is no way that there is zero funding for all MPH-65 applicants

Just to be on the positive side- maybe the mean that all the funding has already been allocated to accepted students but not all accepted students have been made aware of their acceptance and therefore their aid

For appealing for more money, is it better to do sooner or later? I was thinking about holding back until a couple of weeks before Decision Day so schools have a better idea of what their scholarship awards already look like and might be more amenable to my requests. But I'm also seeing folks doing this process earlier and now I'm unsure. Any thoughts on this?

Love this post, I appreciate all the advice you're giving! However, I would disagree with the first point. People with an MPH from Emory and Hopkins work all over the world. Yes, it's easier to find jobs local to that area, but it's not like you're in a binding contract to "stay" in that city post-graduation, and it's definitely possible to find a job elsewhere. Emory posts a report with where all their alumni end up working and while a lot do stay in the Atlanta area, there's also quite a few all over the US. Plus fed government agencies have offices all over the country, so if someone wanted to, they could still work for the CDC in DC or NY if they don't wanna stay in Atlanta. You don't have to turn down good schools solely off the basis that you don't wanna live in that location after graduation. Sorry just my two cents haha, I really appreciate your input!
thank you so much for this reply!! i’m trying to decide if i should go to UW because the west coast is where i’d like to settle down or go to Emory because of how drawn i am to the program but i don’t want to pay all that tuition if i’m not planning on staying there after graduation. i read the original post and started to freak out because i was leaning towards Emory so it’s nice to know that i can still take advantage of all the school has to offer without feeling like it’s only worth it if i stayed in Atlanta

Hadn't thought about it that way, I really hope you're right!

Hello everyone! Congrats on your acceptances and best of luck to those who are still waiting to hear back. I have a few acceptances under my belt and I was wondering how individuals are deciding which programs fit them best. For example, if you are a few years out of undergrad with work experience, would you still consider a program like Columbia (2 years with no experience required) or value JHU’s 11 month MPH or Harvard’s 18 month program over that? I have not heard back from mailman nor TH Chan but am weighing the 11 mo mph against 2 year programs I have been admitted to. Thanks in advanced for any insight!

I feel you! This was my dilemma with GW. At the end of the day, these are all big name schools that are highly ranked and recognized all around the US, so just go to whichever program best suits your needs. Location is only one factor, not the total end game!

the thought of waiting another week for columbia..😳
I just sent Columbia an email. Honestly, even if I get accepted I'm not sure if I'd consider them because of their lack of communication during this whole application process (unless they give a full scholarship or something lol)! I applied well before the priority deadline and have not heard anything... complete silence. Even if it is a rejection, shouldn't they let me know since I applied early?

Also, I recall that someone on here said that Emory has sent out all scholarships? I'm disappointed... I applied early to be considered for scholarships but did not receive anything from Emory yet. I will most likely not be attending Emory since other schools have given me more money. :/

You might want to check your "spam folder" just in case. 😎 Maybe even your email system is pissed off about them.

Waitlisted at HSPH for SM-80 epi. :/ Probably gonna be a no for me even if I get off the waitlist since it'll be unlikely I receive any aid

Just FYI the waitlist letter says: "If you choose to stay on the Wait List, we will let you know how things look by late May. Since the list is not ranked, the Committee will reconvene in May to make its final selections if space becomes available"

Thanks this is helpful! It seems like they are just a little behind on the confirmation process.
I decided to check my spam just now since Pitt sent scholarship info and it went there, and there was an email from Tulane sent yesterday evening with a registration for the portal! I was admitted!

Update: just received this. Ugh if its rolling and it went for review in November shouldn't I have something by now...

Its crazy that Columbia is holding off on my decision until they receive my winter grades. Maybe that will increase my chances of getting in if I do really well in the term?

Won't expect a decision until late March/Early April for Fall.

late May?! lol that's interesting... in the 2020 group i saw some people got off the waitlist around april 8, which is cutting it close to the april 15 deadline, but at least it's before lol

Need grad school advice please!

I got accepted into Columbia's MPH in the Sociomedical Sciences department & Oxford's MSc in International health and tropical medicine and need to pick one.

For context, I've done Sociology from the Uni of Edinburgh, and am now a health editor in India. I want to study public health, specifically women's health and look at the structural inequalities in healthcare.

I'm still waiting on my funding and scholarships but for now:

Columbia is more expensive (big con) but I am excited with the course content and can dabble in many courses, and NYC is a more dynamic vibrant city. Plus I want to experience the US education system and hope to work there for at least 1 year.

Oxford has more prestige in my home country (India) where I want to come back, is 1 year shorter and cheaper. But I have done the UK system and the course content seems more rigid and slightly dated.

Has anyone done either of the courses? Any advice on what factors I should focus on?

TLDR: Just got exciting offers but am confused between Oxford and Columbia

Hey everybody. I know it must have been posted on this forum before but theres 114 pages now soooo I can't find it. Can anyone give me advice on appealing for more money? Has anyone been successful or unsuccessful? Any help with this would be incredible, I have to do it but I am so scared! Thank you so much

I think each department gets a certain portion. Within each department, qualified applicants get a certain percentage. This is why after an applicant is accepted and awarded a certain amount, there wont be any more extra funding to give out. That must be why they said all funding is awarded.

That is my interpretation of how they handle things at HSPH.

Yeah, I am getting annoyed about this too. Especially since the whole false acceptance scandal. My application got sent to review on December 21. I really do hope we hear back by this week.

i think that’s definitely a good thing! hopefully the long wait will all be worth it 🙂

So just to confirm... has anyone heard back from Columbia about fin aid?

Also, let me know if anyone is attending ASW events this week 🙂
Nope, I haven't heard anything from them yet about aid but I just got accepted last week.

And yes! I'm attending nearly all of the events haha. Which ones are you planning on attending?

Woohooo I got into USC!! Got my acceptance email on Feb 5th. Still waiting to hear from Columbia, though :/
Has anyone heard from the SMS department specifically? I've emailed the associate director, and she responded, "the admissions process is ongoing and will continue through April. I expect you should receive notification within the next couple of weeks." I hope it's not a rejection.

I am also still waiting for financial aid info. I got accepted 1/20 and this wait seems neverending.
Same here, accepted 1/20 and still waiting. Only a very small number of people have posted about already receiving financial aid, so I think most of us are still waiting.

May I ask which track you applied to?
