MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i heard back from penn last tuesday! 🙂 it was a little over 2 weeks after my interview
I applied on Jan 13 and I still haven't heard anything from them... I didn't even know there was an interview. I emailed the administrative coordinator 5 days ago as well, and have not gotten a response. Congratulations on your acceptance! 🙂

Any HSPS 65HM still waiting? My feeling is telling me that I will get waitlisted at this point...

Someone who did not get accepted recently told me that HSPH sends out rejections first, so if we haven't heard then it might be a good thing. It's just a theory at this point, but helps me get through the day; kinda like therapy.

But I def saw some hm65 acceptance already and I think they release in batches so Idk if they gonna have a second acceptance batch... Bro, I feel you hard.

anyone hear back from GWU that applied before the priority date? i havent heard back and i think my application went under review on 1/27 when I applied 1/15... i am so eager to hear back (hopefully with good news.. i am 0-3 so far 😕)
I am in the same boat, my app was verified on 1/10. I had emailed asking for a status update and they responded a week later that they are working on it! I keep on getting psyched out by the hella recruitment e-mails about applying for the next cohort 😆

thank you so much!! I've seen that interviews are still happening for some other schools and I'm sure for upenn too- this cycle has been a bit longer than most. hopefully you hear back this week (and good news from Yale too!)

Since we are all getting closer to committing to our choice of school, is there a website or app to look for roommates? Need legit ones and not fall for some shady deal. I have checked out apartments.com and some others but looking to see if I can cut down costs.

I think roomies searching has been going on separately within different school groups. Have you been connecting with your school groups(Facebook/groupme/WhatsApp/discord🤯🤯)?

does anyone know what tulane's mph acceptance rate actually is?

i have a 2.8 gpa but its halfway thru the last semester of college and I have all As this semester so far (and I am pretty sure its gonna stay that way).. does anyone think i have a shot or is in the same boat?
Hey! sophas verified my gpa as a 2.8 and I was admitted to the MPH & TM! I also had a strong upward trend, but to my understanding, at least the tropmed dept, puts a lot of emphasis on LORs and your SOP. Good luck <3

UNC and Emory have rerouted me to my second choices- honestly that kind of closes the cycle for me! Unless something substantial changes- I'm going to Tulane!!!! With my interests, it was already kind of a first choice to me- I'm so thrilled to focus my MPH on tropmed!!!

That being said, if anyone is thinking about or decides to commit to Tulane, DM me! I'd love to connect ☺️

Accepted to BU and CUNY today. Cannot fully process this but so grateful and hoping y’all get into your dream school w/ funding! Y’all deserve it all just keep manifesting it!!
congrats! what concentration?

Hey! Just wanted to reach out too and tell you that there is definitely hope for you! I had a similar GPA (my stats are on page 52), but I truly feel like public health is a field that sees you as more than just a number. I went into this application cycle hoping and praying for just ONE school and really can’t believe I’ve gotten so much more than I expected. Just remember that you’re going to end up exactly where you were meant to end up. Keep your head up 😊

Anyone considering UMD, especially for Epi? Was hoping there is a Facebook or GroupMe!!

I am really struggling here (still) between the whole UNC with loans and rent vs. UMD part time with probably no loans and living at home. I might be the most indecisive person to ever exist and that April deadline is coming on so fast lol.

Has anyone heard back from Yale or Brown. I applied 12/15 and still nothing. Not sure if this is a good sign or bad sign? My anxiety is getting me.

**Interviewed with UPenn and met with Admissions Director. Didn't find UPenn the right fit for me and didnt really appreciate Admission Directors approach/comments on a few things. Everything was going well up until I talked about how my parents immigrated here from Turkey and the Admissions Director response was "so you're a refugee". I replied "no I was born here and my parents are immigrants not refugees". She proceeded to attack me throughout the interview and didnt even ask me any questions proceeding that. At one point, when I asked her if she could introduce herself because she hadn't earlier she just dove straight into questions her response was "I'm the admissions director, I am the boss around here". I wouldn't go to that school if they gave me a full ride. Good luck everyone!

Can I ask my minorities a question? How should we deal with the white savior BS of the public health field? Speaking as first gen Mexican American who is the first in his family to go to college let alone grad school
I don’t know the answer but as a WOC working at a white PH org... I hope grad school isn’t like this lol

It pretty lame. Dont even get me started on the Latinx crap. Im a mexican too. Citizen even. It is so rare to see representation for us that I get excited when I see a Mexican doing great things in public health.
I am also the first to go to college let alone grad school
What I do personally is ignore it. You get so much **** for bringing up your viewpoint that its not worth the fight since you wont change their mind 'They know better than us'. For example, the 'latinx' is 100% anglicizing our language but when I have brought it up I get the mob saying the crazy gender norms and stuff. Spanish uses gender. So does, French, Italian, Portugese, etc.
EDIT: the latinx thing. only 3% of hispanics have even heard of it. Try and say that to a hispanic person and they wont know what you are on about.

I'm still waiting for GWU as well and I applied around the same time as you! I'm sure you're really nervous. Are you still waiting for more schools? Good luck!!! On your call with them, you should take the opportunity to express that you really want to go to GWU and the reasons why; keep it short, like an elevator pitch. Ask them more about your program and if they can give you any tips for improving a future application (if you would be interested in applying again next cycle) 🙂

I see what you’re saying! I think my main thing with the anti Latinx people are that they’re seeking to invalidate trans experiences which isn’t right at all. Latino/Latina/Latine work better in Spanish tho

I have to interview for UPenn, but someone else posted in here that they got accepted into the general program that I also applied to without one. When I went to schedule my interview, I had to find a date like 2 weeks out because the calendar was booked. Hope your decision or request to interview is coming soon! The cycle is definitely still ongoing!!

Extremely unfortunate.

When do you think we will hear back? The email said early March so this week or next week?

Wait, wtf...she sounds pretty ignorant...How does someone in her position even not know the difference between a refugee and immigrant, let alone just assume you are a refugee?! I have my interview next week...and she's supposed to be on my interview to, eek!

WOW, I'm appalled by what she said. I also interviewed with UPenn but had the Associate Director and another faculty member as interviewers. I can say that they were nothing but polite, helpful, and friendly. Sounds like the Director needs to check herself. Again, so sorry to hear about your experience!

Looking for advice: I am trying to decide between BU, GW, and Emory. With the scholarships, I received the schools are all within a few thousand dollars of each other, so that's not really a deciding factor I can use.
My thoughts so far on how to decide & positives and negatives:
Emory: Lower COL, higher-ranked program, dream school (never thought I would get in), more research and internship opportunities, far from home, more quantitative, school is more science-focused (highly ranked in other health science grad programs as well), CDC opportunities.
GW: more expensive COL, close to home, very specific major I am interested in, less quantitative more qualitative, not interested in being involved in policy or politics so that might limit my internships there
BU: more expensive COL, closer to home, great university overall

Please let me know if anyone has any other insight or thoughts I am not considering for these schools? Or if you are trying to decide between any of these schools what are your deciding factors/ thoughts on the programs? If you committed to one of these programs why did you choose it?

Duke awarded me 15% off tuition and a $7,500 field work grant! I don't think it's enough to make me go there (I prefer MPH over MSGH) but I reallyyyy need Emory to release financial aid info🙃🙃🙃
edit: so I read my letter and my final semester would be completely free under this grant.... ugh now i'm actually considering going there

Thanks for the info! Honestly I don't really care about an admissions to Penn anymore bc of MPHWH's experience, and because I've already gotten accepted to schools I like a lot more, but I still have anxiety about not hearing back from the rest of my schools.

You seem like you already know your answer 🙂

anyone have thoughts on nyu vs BU? i got more funding at BU (double) but I could live at home for nyu and would have to get an apartment for BU/
If you're trying to figure out how housing plays into it, assume that you'd pay about $1000/month in Boston to live with 2-3 roommates (source: I lived in Boston for 4 years). Over 2 school years, that's like $20,000-$24,000 just on rent. Not to mention food, T rides, and all that other fun stuff that comes with being in Boston. Is NYU an extra $20k-$24k more than BU?

It sounds like you grew up in NYC - Boston is a very different city, and perhaps it's worth exploring a new city! I really loved it. I live in DC now and probably won't move back to Boston, but I have very fond memories and several friends who still live there. Boston and NYC are both terrific public health cities, so I don't think you can go wrong with that aspect of it.
