MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If you're trying to figure out how housing plays into it, assume that you'd pay about $1000/month in Boston to live with 2-3 roommates (source: I lived in Boston for 4 years). Over 2 school years, that's like $20,000-$24,000 just on rent. Not to mention food, T rides, and all that other fun stuff that comes with being in Boston. Is NYU an extra $20k-$24k more than BU?

It sounds like you grew up in NYC - Boston is a very different city, and perhaps it's worth exploring a new city! I really loved it. I live in DC now and probably won't move back to Boston, but I have very fond memories and several friends who still live there. Boston and NYC are both terrific public health cities, so I don't think you can go wrong with that aspect of it.
hi! can I pm you?

Hey! I reached out to admissions the other day about waitlist procedures and they said that when spots open up the department will review all applicants on the waitlist and choose best applicant. Hope that helps! Good luck 🙂
Very helpful thanks. Did they give any hints as to how long the waitlist is and usually what percentage of students on the waitlist get admitted? Also are they really releasing decisions May 15? Seems so late....

Extremely unfortunate.

When do you think we will hear back? The email said early March so this week or next week?
I hope this week. As I said earlier I emailed Mary Keefe about 11 days ago and she said my application was in the final stages of review and I should expect a response in 7-10 days, so I was hoping to hear back today.

WOW, I'm appalled by what she said. I also interviewed with UPenn but had the Associate Director and another faculty member as interviewers. I can say that they were nothing but polite, helpful, and friendly. Sounds like the Director needs to check herself. Again, so sorry to hear about your experience!
Thank you Pwny. I only had the AD in the interview, I was told two faculty members would join but it was just her. Given that individuals have implicit biases, I felt that it was unfair to have one person attest to your strengths, background, and credentials to determine a decision. But it is what it is. The program wasn't the right fit for me anyways, for the capstone and field work they place you based on the skills they think you need not the research topic youre interested in.

Thanks for the info! Honestly I don't really care about an admissions to Penn anymore bc of MPHWH's experience, and because I've already gotten accepted to schools I like a lot more, but I still have anxiety about not hearing back from the rest of my schools.
Hi mphapplicant99, congratulations on your acceptances and hang in there I am sure you will hear back from the rest of the schools soon enough. Also, please dont let my experience affect your decision to attend UPenn. Look into the program and the faculty and hopefully you will find the right program for you!

I'm still waiting for GWU as well and I applied around the same time as you! I'm sure you're really nervous. Are you still waiting for more schools? Good luck!!! On your call with them, you should take the opportunity to express that you really want to go to GWU and the reasons why; keep it short, like an elevator pitch. Ask them more about your program and if they can give you any tips for improving a future application (if you would be interested in applying again next cycle) 🙂
yes! i am still waiting on a bunch of schools i like panicked and mass applied to like 20 schools hahaha but thats great advice, i will for sure tell them about how i want to go to GWU, if you want i can let u know what they say if anything i said applied to you🙂

Best of luck! They would be lucky to have you!

Can I ask my minorities a question? How should we deal with the white savior BS of the public health field? Speaking as first gen Mexican American who is the first in his family to go to college let alone grad school
Hi! I am also a minority, but always identified with the white community. I’m not sure what your age range is, but I’m on the older end of most applicants (30s), and this was never discussed in my prior professional careers (attorney and adjunct professor). Ironically, I was very much a part of movement from 2014-2018 where I also led diversity trainings to corporations and schools districts pro-Bono. This may make me sound really old, but what is the “white savior” complex or ideas you’ve encountered? Truly interested and learning since a lot of the work I did seems a bit outdated now. Would love to hear yours, and any other BIPOC’s experiences, particularly in the Public Health field.

(I also spent my first years working as an attorney at large corporate law firm before #MeToo so I have stories for days about young women in traditionally male dominated environments).

Congrats on your accomplishments! My mom was a first generation for college and graduate school as well and it definitely was NOT easy. It’s very easy to take college and graduated programs for granted when you are not the first trailblazer in your family. You’re amazing - as are all First Gens!

I feel like we were in the Yale limbo game together lol-- crossing my fingers for good news from Yale for you! 🙂

Mary said yesterday that they are diligently working to get the decisions out this week. Hang tight. Hope good news is on the way for those who are waiting.

Does anyone know the COA for GWU? I saw in the health policy class that the program usually takes 5 semesters to complete so I’m not sure what the cost of the program will end up being.

My program would also be 5 semesters and the tuition cost looks to be around $82,000.

For GW:

Look at it by credit, not semester. It’s 45 credits to get the degree and something like $1800 per credit, but that cost increases slightly each year. 45 x $1800 is about $81,000. Factor in tuition increases and you’re looking at probably more like $85,000.

if someone has an $8,000 scholarship, for example, they would decide how to divide it up over the semesters and it would lower the cost of each credit.

Anyone interested in GW health policy- this Friday 3/12 at 12pm ET there is a prospective students panel with current students (such as myself). Check your emails for the link or DM me.

Did anyone else sign up for the Columbia Virtual Tour today at 12:30 PM ET and received a confirmation email with a link that is *not* clickable? 🙄

That's amazing. I'm terrified of making any move right now. 😓😭Ugh 🤣🤣🤣🤣
What were your considerations in turning it down?
I had a really hard time declining Yale's offer, it was the last one I turned down. I really love the community and overall vibe I got from Yale, as well as the financial aid package I received. I ultimately went with HSPH because it is a better fit for my research interests and offers better networking opportunities in my field.

I know it's a tough decision, I wish you the best and know you'll do great wherever you end up going!

I'm in the same boat, I'm 99% sure I'm going to accept Columbia but I don't want to decline any offers until I'm sure of my decision. I also almost feel bad declining schools LOL

I was rejected from Yale last week on 3/4, so I honestly think it’s a good sign for those still waiting for a Yale decision lol! Wishing Bulldog dreamers luck with Yale 🤗

Got rejected for MPH-45 SBS track. I am blessed with other options and I know for a fact that whatever happens, there is always good in it, and everything happens for a reason.
I'm soooo glad you've got a result. Now it'll be easier to make your decision and it will be a good one.
I'm still waiting.

Berkeley just awarded me a $6,000 Wallace Center Traineeship Award. 😭 I do love Berkeley and the professor I aimed to work with.
