MSU-COM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
They do admissions on a rolling basis and read applications in order (as I'm sure you know). So, no worries. I put mine in Sept. 15th and didn't get accepted until today. So, you have time... I about gave up myself. Good Luck!!

They actually don't read applications in order... I was complete Sept 6th and have heard nothing yet... :/ they review based on how competitive you are. So sure it helps if you are early, because you have more chances to be reviewed but really its all about how competitive you are.

I completely agree. However, they look at (or read) them in order... you may not get accepted or rejected in order, due to competitiveness.

So, they are still looking at you! Good Luck!

However, my fiance is trying to find a college close by one of the MSU sites that has photochemistry... And thoughts??

I would be surprised if MSU doesn't have a division for that.. If not, look into Wayne State (near Macomb and DMC) or University of Michigan (sort of near DMC).

Random thoughts after reading recent posts:

Applications are supposedly up a fair amount this year.

Schedule tours at Macomb and DMC if you're interested, they're more than happy to show you around.

Quick summary of the three (I'm at East Lansing), you decide what's your ideal:

EL: Medium sized college town + Lansing, huge campus and its facilities, big class (~200 people), good bench research opportunities available, slightly more extracurriculars available than the other campuses, Fee hall is an old building (new one on the way...)

DMC: Urban area and lots of cool stuff to do in Detroit despite the negative press it gets, brand new facilities, smaller class (~50 people), abundance of excellent hospitals nearby

Macomb: Community-style area with free parking on campus, smaller class (~50 people), seems like it would be a good campus to live near if you have a family, new facilities

In my mind it comes down to personal preferences for the area where you want to live. You will get a great education regardless of the site you choose.

Thanks so much that's exactly what I was looking for. I am planning on visiting but since I live in Columbus and am going to school / have two jobs its hard for me to find the time to drive up...I'll probably just end up visiting Detroit and E. Lansing.

Thanks so much!😀

I've heard many people refer to Macomb as a place for students with families, but I think it would be perfect for young singles as well. Most people who choose the DMC will live in the suburbs anyway, so I figure you could just live a few minutes away from the macomb campus AND Detroit without having to park and walk around the DMC at night! For example, I live in Troy, which is 15-20 minutes to both places (I'm north of the DMC and south of macomb). I'm currently a grad student at Wayne State SOM and I park in the same lot as a lot of the MSUCOM DMC students. Two of my friend's cars were stolen out of that lot, I'm constantly followed by people asking for money, and a lot of my friends feel they have to call security to escort them to their car when studying past dark! In my opinion, macomb offers a safe and very nice learning environment but you can live close enough for the night-life of the D!!

I'm not trying to scare anyone away from the DMC. In fact, I was accepted to WSU so I'll be about 100 ft from the DMC students for the next 4 years. Just wanted to give an outlook from someone who is currently going to school at the same place as the DMC students! I apologize if I've offended anyone! PS: the DMC facilities are really nice!

Ok, I need some advice. I was accepted to Wayne's SOM and I'm planning on attending. I still haven't heard back from MSUCOM but I can't decide if I should withdraw my application or not. Obviously, if I'm not planning to go to MSU, I don't want to take someone's spot (if I'm accepted) but I'm paranoid that something will fall through with Wayne (miss a deadline or something) and MSUCOM is my 2nd choice. Am I being too paranoid? Advice please!

I think there is a misconception about the DMC. It is located in the heart of tons of great hospitals, but as students I believe we do not have opportunities at those hospitals yet because there is a partnership with WSUSOM. The first two years will be spent in the classroom and the 3rd and 4th years will be spent in the hospitals that are part of the base hospitals for MSUCOM and none of the hospitals downtown are part of the base hospital system. You can elect to do rotations at the other hospitals but that requires a bit of paperwork and is quite a hassle from what I heard. Maybe things will change for the incoming class tho..

So in your opinion, would you recommend the main campus?

PS Has anyone else noticed that whoever picks up the phone in admissions is SUPER rude? I've called like 3 times over the course of a while and seriously every time she gives me 'tude. It almost makes me not want to go....

It really depends on the person. I went to Wayne State for undergrad so I have been in the area for the past couple years, and I am looking for a change of scenery. Don't get me wrong, the DMC campus is absolutely beautiful, everything is brand new inside. Personally, I am looking for that Big Ten College Environment which I didn't get at Wayne which is why I am leaning toward East Lansing, even though I do live about 10 minutes from the DMC.

I never had that problem. They have been super nice to me!!

If you've been accepted to another medical school and you plan on attending that school, it is generally requested that you withdraw your applications from other schools. There are other students who have not yet been accepted to any schools who are competing for a position you might be offered, even if you have no plan on attending.

As for deadlines, I think you are being a bit paranoid. Wayne will make it very clear what they need from you and when they need it. You've made it through the tough part of the application process, the tail end should be easy.

In other words, if you've already been accepted to your top choice, don't be greedy 🙂

Hi Everyone!

Does MSU COM let you claim in-state tuition after one year? I know most med schools don't, just wondering if maybe MSU was an exception.

This is my top choice school, but the only thing that is causing me to hesitate from putting down my deposit here is the 70K tuition per year for oos.

if it helps, I lived in MI for 8 years when I was a kid...and I probably want to end up in MI for practice.

Do you think it's cause you've called so many times? Just kidding!!! 😛 There's no excuse for being so rude. Though I've heard of places that are rude on purpose to see how you respond, and then they'll make a note of it in your app. So continue to be extremely nice!

Hmmm maybe they just hate me for some reason. Every time I've called she's snapped at me.

I agree with whites--it's really not fair to hold your spot "just in case" if you really have no intention of going there. Think about if you were still waiting for an acceptance--I'm sure that's what you would hope everyone else did so you had as much of a chance to get in as possible.

Also, don't worry about Wayne. If they accept you, that means they really do want you at their school. They're not going to do anything that will trip you up and somehow land you med school-less

:slap:Wow...guess which one I am! But seriously, complete honesty...I like it! I will write an email this weekend so I won't be in the running for Wednesday's acceptances. I thought I was being paranoid, but wanted to hear it from someone else! Good luck to everyone!

Hi there,

As I know, MSUCOM is not an exception. The school will not let you change your resident status once you matriculate the program. You can however move to MI to live one year prior to matriculate. But not everyone does so.

So, it's your choice to pay 70K to attend MSUCOM or look for another school. Good luck!

MSU has a scholarship that you can apply for that is specific to OOS students. http://com.msu.edu/ss/scholarships.html The scholarship is the MSUCOM Non-Resident Student Scholarship. According to the website, the application due date is Sept 1st. It should cut down the cost of tuition for you.

I actually had to request an application deadline postponement. It was initially August 6th and it got postponed to Aug 20th. Did I ruin my chance?

Anyways, I sent in my stuff and the only thing I've gotten from them is the 3 copies of an invitation to check out the campus.

They do interviews right? How long after turning in your app did y'all get invited?

I had to as well. I heard they are very understanding about this, considering how extensive it is and their evaluation forms... I had to postpone because of those.

Also, they don't interview.

Hey everyone, I got waitlisted on Oct 13. Any idea what it means to be waitlisted somewhat early, while others haven't heard anything back yet or when waitlistees might get an acceptance email?

I don't think this hurts your chances. I had to postpone mine due to a letter of eval taking longer than expected. I got mine postponed from Sept. 14 to Oct. 14 but finally finished the secondary on Oct. 6. I heard back a week later on Oct 13 with my acceptance so I don't think it should ruin anything.

MSUCOM does not conduct interviews like other medical schools. They generally get a sense of the type of person you are through your primary and secondary applications, however in some cases they will invite you in for any additional questions for an hr interview.

Hey all Class of 2015 classmates! We have a facebook page started so we can start networking and talking about the upcoming year! It's a great tool for planning visits to sites, finding roommates, asking questions etc.! The link is below so join if you are an accepted member of the class of 2015!...and congrats!

Does anyone know if there is any specific way, or whether or not I even have to, schedule a date to go and tour MaComb or the DMC campuses. I know they have schedule to visit the main campus, but not sure on the others.

Unfortunately I know exactly what you mean. However, I think there are two different receptionists that work in the admissions office, one being the super rude one that you mentioned and the other one is actually very sweet and always helpful. In fact, the first time I called the person that answered the phone was very rude and I ended up cutting the conversion short in fear of negatively impacting my application. But later the same day I, hesitantly, decided to call back to set up an appointment with an admissions counseler and the receptionist that answered the phone this time was very nice and went out of her way to help me out.

What bothers me is that on the msucom website it says that if any applicant is rude to the msucom employees over the phone a note will be made in the applicants file which I'm sure will make getting accepted much harder if not impossible. However, msucom is doing nothing about making sure that their employees aren't being rude to potential students. I understand it may get a bit frustrating having to answer similar questions to applicants all day but a little professional courtesy should be part of the job requirement.

That being said, I have visited the EL and DMC campuses many time and everyone is always very nice and willing to answer any questions you may have. I wouldn't let one person deter you from an otherwise amazing school.

I agree with you completely--that's why it pissed me off so much. I wasn't even calling for an "annoying" reason, I had a legitimate question and was super polite on the phone but she had an attitude with me right away. It happened again a few weeks later when I called after I was accepted to ask about a form I didn't understand, and she kept cutting me off and talking to me like I was an idiot. I'm really not easily offended but it really left me sour after I got off the phone. I wish there was some way I could find out who that lady was and say something--it's really not fair and I think that kind of attitude would really deter people from going to MSUCOM, especially if they had the option to decide between a few schools. I think admissions offices sometimes forget that it is partially their job to recruit US--especially the lucky ones who get into many schools (which unfortunately will probably not be me...but still!).

Anyway it obviously pissed me off--I'm not one to get mad about stuff like that but it's like, this whole process is stressful and inhumane as it is, even when admissions offices are super nice and helpful, we don't need some grumpy lady treating medical school applicants like they're trying to get into kindergarten.

Let me get this straight:
So once your secondary is in they pile it with all the other secondaries and they only review the most competitive each week in that stack. Meaning that if you're never competitive enough compared to the others in the stack that they are reviewing that week then you will never even be looked at...and you won't even receive a rejection letter? As opposed to you were competitive enough, they looked at it...and then they rejected you?

Basically I'm just trying to figure out if I will get a letter, regardless of acceptance or rejection....the thought of sending in that secondary and not even being looked at and then not even getting a rejection letter is kind of unsettling. Help?

I agree. During the summer, I called about an application question and was rudely cut short and told I had to make an appointment with one of their advisors for the question (even though it was ONE question about a due date). I'm not sure if this is standard procedure for MSUCOM administration, but if it is, many applicants could be easily turned off to this school. Especially at MSUCOM, where there is no interview. Students are not able to see the school/meet students before being accepted.

Yes, there is no guarantee that your application will ever get reviewed. I'm not sure if maybe at the very end of the cycle, as in when classes basically start, if they send out a rejection letter to everyone then if they were not reviewed. But I do know that you may not be reviewed at all based on competitiveness and that is stated on their website or in application materials, something along those lines.

Can anyone who applied early and still waiting to hear back post or PM their stats to me? Just curious the kind of applicant that is put on wait. My friend who was accepted applied the beginning of this month and heard back exactly a week later.

That's really tough. And judging from the previous comments, calling to ask about your file does not seem like the route to go. So this is it. I really just have to wait throughout the entire cycle for a letter, if that. brutal.

From our class meeting today:

As of today there are 96 offers of admission for class of 2015. There have been 3100 applications so far, 2/3s of whom are in-state.

Last year it took around 480 (I don't remember the exact number) offers for the class to fill to capacity. Sit tight if you haven't heard anything yet. Good luck tomorrow.

My last evaluation was mailed out yesterday in state, how amazing would it be if I heard back tomorrow?

Haha, one can dream....*sigh

Do you mean there are 96 offers left to give, or they have given out 96 offers?

It was an e-mail that came around noon. At least there's a lot more waitlist movement at MSUCOM than at some of the other schools, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. 😱

ya ull be fine, and im just curious but when were u complete, becuz everyone is scaring me with the whole, if ur not reviewed within a week, u wont be reviewed at all

I hope that is not true because this would have been my week to be reviewed.

High or low waitlist? High = guaranteed spot for next year.

Wait, what? They tell you which waitlist you are on?

Now I'm curious - do you have any stats about acceptance rates for high vs. low waitlist?

Given out, there are many more to send out.

Not true, though if you're competitive - you have a good shot at being accepted within a week.

Wait, what? They tell you which waitlist you are on?

Now I'm curious - do you have any stats about acceptance rates for high vs. low waitlist?

"high" waitlist is guaranteed acceptance for c/o 2015 or 2016. So 100% acceptance if you will. This list is fairly short.

"low" waitlist, tbh I haven't heard of anyone getting off this since there is a relatively low amount of people who turn down MSUCOM. I won't make a guess on the percentage but I assume it's low near zero.
