Okay this thread needed to be started 😀 If anyone has any questions about the application or school don't hesitate to ask!!

For any 2017ers if you have any questions about the super long supplemental app don't be afraid to ask. I think they do it so they don't have to interview applicants, but it doesn't make it any less annoying.

Orcagirl, I will totally take you up on that.

There were six essay questions last year for out of state students. I think maybe seven for in state. It's not the supplemental you want to put off.

Agreed! They are lengthy too. 250 words (not characters!). Definitely will proof read or share mine from last year with those that would like the help!

I know they have changed one of their essay questions (no more "what are you passionate about outside of vet med") but would be more than happy to share the others!

Good luck!! I feel like NCSU is under represented on here so we need some more future wolf-packers!!!

That was one of my favorite questions. I got to write about reading and poetry. It was so much fun. (I minored in creative writing with an emphasis in poetry).

And we definitely need more future wolf-packers. There were a few of us last year, but not too many.

SO TRUE! I had all my supplemental essays in a single document. I had a section for each school. Then I put the question (for reference later) and then my essay. I typed them out when I was on the computer, but if I was spending the day at work or on campus I printed them out to bullet point my thoughts. It really helped me to figure out what I wanted to say. The worst part of the whole application cycle was that some supplemental essay questions were similar to one another but couldn't be answered the exact same (copy and paste and reword).

Also, that way you don't type everything in online and then lose it all when you're done. But I'm sure Emiloo could tell you more about that, right?

 ohhhh wow that would suck big time! Don't think I was a member yet to witness that one 😉

Nah I actually brought it up for the first time a few weeks ago on the c/o 2017 thread I think. I got on a roll and just started typing and my essays were AWESOME. My boyfriend's computer is weird and sometimes when you hit backspace, it will put the internet browser back a page. Yeah... I went to proof read them all, took out a comma, and there went the page. I lost my shiz and called up my BF irrationally screaming at him ! 😎
I couldn't even remember anything I wrote. I half arsed them all after that and obviously didn't make a very good impression 😳

Oy. Glad you posted that. I got so used to checking the character count on my PS that I didn't pay attention and assumed they were 250 characters. I spent a good while thinking "Holy crap! Its difficult to say anything of substance with such a strict limit!!!!!!" :smack:

Hey! I am VERY interested in NC State. Any current students willing to proof read essays? I have some rough drafts I would love some feedback on. Let me know!!

Thanks so much 🙂

Are you looking for content feedback, grammar, a little of both? Send me a pm with what you're looking for and I'll give you my email. I haven't started yet, but I did have to write them last year to get in.

Just chiming in to say I'm also totally willing to read personal statements, essays, answer questions, whatever. I'm also c/o 2016, but spent four years as an undergrad at NC State first, so I know the area.

I think NC State is my number 1 right now 🙂! This supplemental is not fun though..

Trilt, can you tell me something about the area? How far is it from the ocean?

Thanks 🙂

Where my family lives on the coast is a 2.5hr drive - but most people who don't have a particular place to head to for the beach will go to Wilmington, which is just a teeny bit over two hours. Or a bit less if you speed...

Did you have any particular questions about the area? I'd suggest a perusal through the Raleigh responses on this thread, then if you have anything else you're curious about, ask away. 🙂

I liked the supplemental application! NC State doesn't interview, so it was really the only place I could elaborate and sell different parts of my application... I couldn't imagine being only evaluated on what's in VMCAS.

I will definitely proof read! Can provide some insight on grammar, but would mostly provide feedback on whether you've answered the question, relative to NCSU, and overall content 😀

YAY! We're going to the beach tomorrow and it should be 2ish hours! Its a straight shot on I-40E from Raleigh (Wilmington)

GOOD LUCK NCSU APPLICANTS!

I'm applying to NC State! It's one of my top three schools 🙂 The vet campus looks AWESOME! Could you current students tell us OOSers a little more about it? All I really have is pictures and I'd like to get first-hand opinions!

Also, are any of you involved in the LA portion of the school? I'd really love to hear about that as well!

I wish I had more information, but our classes don't even start until tomorrow. I love the open feel of the building. The large animal hospital and the teaching animal unit (TAU) are right on the veterinary campus. There's a chance to apply for residency after your first year, which makes tuition fairly nice. Not really sure about too much more right now. I'm not large animal focused, but if you have any specific questions I can see if I can find answers.

That's so good to know about claiming residency! Another reason I'm excited to apply here! I don't have any specific questions currently, but if I think of any I'll be sure to ask.

Good luck on your first day!!

Thanks. Good luck with your applications. I hope to see you in the NCSU class of 2017!

Still time to start this supplemental 🙂 Gooo NCSU!

Hope that anatomy lab is fun.

I'm confused about this supplemental references page.

These are people who are not writing recommendation letters, but who will speak highly of us? 😕 How many additional references should we have?
We definitely need more than zero, right? I'm kind of freaking out! :barf:

I wouldn't stress too much. Personally there was a veterinarian, who I wasn't able to get to write a letter of recommendation (she was on her bicycle traveling across the country all summer long). I put her down because I knew she would give me a good recommendation if I needed it. Maybe if you worked with vets that would write you a good letter, but you aren't having them write one for one reason or another, you can put them down.

I put every vet I worked with that didn't write me a recommendation... these are like people who knew me for two days or so on really short shadowing experiences. I'm pretty sure they didn't contact them or anything.

Don't freak! I put one of the vets who did write me an eLOR, but wasn't one of the eLORS I was having NCSU actually count. When in doubt, call the admissions office. Everyone is incredibly nice and helpful and will most certainly point you in the right direction (and alleviate concerns!).

Okay, I'm not freaking out any more. I found a couple who will work perfectly.

thanks for the advice

I am a current fourth year at NCSU. Unfortunately clinics have me a bit too busy to proof read essays and whatnot, but I will happily try to field any general questions. I am an IS student who went to NCSU for undergrad, with interests in Small Animal and Small Exotic/Companion Avian Medicine. My plans right now are to enter private practice after graduation (pending successful survival of the NAVLE 😛 ), but that could change. I don't know much about the large animal clinical services, but I can say TAU (Teaching Animal Unit, large animal intro stuff) is a great resource for even us large animal challenged folk! I also love Raleigh, but I am a bit partial!

One of the supplemental questions asks, "Explain how you think you can contribute to the specific needs of veterinary medicine in the state of NC?"

Any suggestions-- applying OOS so don't know much about NC's needs.

Thanks!

That one was a tough one for me, too, as I plan to specialize and am pretty sure I'll end up out of NC because of the itty-bittyness of the field I want to end up in in academia. I started with a short sentence that mentioned vet care for pets, food animals (NC has huge swine and poultry industries) and research (big research triangle here), to show that I recognized the diversity of what vets do in the state.

Afterwards, I talked about spreading the programs that I would work to develop, being involved with the AVMA on national issues (which impact each state) and also how, as a professor, I would be impacting students that would be the researchers and clinicians the state needs.

Not sure if that's helpful? Your answer kind of really depends on your interests.

I did something really similar to Trilt. As I'm really interested in research, I took the North Carolina is one of the best places in the world for biomedical research (especially private industry) route.

It's also kinda ironic, because from what I'm hearing the private practice market in NC is pretty well saturated and many new grads go out of state for jobs.

I talked about how I realize swine and poultry (specifically turkey) are a large part of the industry in NC, but also I realized the threat of rabies in the state. There's more wildlife and at the time I was reading about dogs over here being euthanized because of exposure and not having vaccines. I really want to focus on general small animal practice with a large emphasis on client education. And I found a way to say just that. It sounded much better than this though.

bumpity bump.
this thread is especially dear to my heart since I will start my classes with ya'll.

So....I emailed the school to verify that all of my transcripts and GRE scores had arrived. Felt like an idiot when I saw on the response email that all of them had arrived *except* my NCSU transcript....:smack:

Go figure that's the one I'd forget about.

On the bright side, you can get it sent as a pdf really quickly!

For the alternative eligibility, do you have to specify which gpa is below the requirement? The question doesn't specifically ask you to do that. Anybody know? My transcripts are insane. I get different values every time I try to calculate cumulative or pre-req. :scared:

From NCSU's statistical data for the class of 2015:
(emphasis mine)

Pointers
1. Diversify veterinary experience.
2. Don’t leave categories blank (animal, extracurricular, honors).
3. Provide good detail. Avoid “Other duties as assigned” and “Same as above.”
4. Know the LOR writers. Choose references carefully. Specific examples.
5. Write personal statement like a cover letter. Avoid the “I love animals” angle. Include professional area of interest - Must match experience.
6. Meet all deadlines.
7. Include all activities (HS, College, and Post).
8. Explain rationale to committee when appropriate.
9. Don’t rely on Student Doctor Network for accurate information.
10. Carefully review “subjective review” criteria.
