So basically they'll consider all the 57 again if a slot opens up. I guessing in reality there probably is a ranked list behind the scenes since it seems hard to believe they would re-review all the applications, but if they tell applicants there's a rank, it would encourage people to drop off. As it is they'll lose some of the waiting list to people enrolling at other schools.
Actually, they really don't rank it. They work to make each class diverse and compatible, not to mention fields of experience/interest and background. I doubt they review every aspect of everyone in the wait pool, but they sort it based on who will fulfill what deficiency is created by whoever didnt accept. IE if someone with lots of experience and interest in pathology who came from a research background, an applicant in the pool with similar experiences/interests may be more likely to be pulled. Honestly, the waiting pool is large enough, it doesnt matter if people drop off it. I was surprised at how familiar the adcoms were with the accepted & waitlisted applicants; they could recall details of experience, PSs, etc.
