Negotiation is over group. BE AWARE!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
But, to get back to the original topic, for those of you not enrolled yet, some schools maintain publicly-accessible class websites with your name/picture on it, FYI. This thread reminded me of the awful picture I had taken of me during orientation and I was the only person not really smiling because I thought it was supposed to be a more "professional " photo.

Quit screwing up my stereotypes, EG. 😉

If this is leading to some cognitive dissonance for you, you can subtype me if it would make you feel more comfortable. (Don't mind me, just trying to convince myself that I'm actually learning something in my Psychology of Stereotyping and Prejudice class."

Curbstomping, I dunno, nyan. Manhating feminazi? Heck YES. I got a 99% in my women's studies class last quarter. This fact frightened my mother.

Anywho since I'm derailing this whole thing...I guess I don't really know what to think of these groups. One of my profs this quarter is a vet and she warned us of this several weeks ago. It's scary stuff to think about, no doubt, but we need to stick to our guns when it comes for standing up for ourselves and our future careers.

In response to this and a post on the first page about Oklahoma's vet school: Is it really that bad? I had no idea you guys had groups like this positioning themselves against you. I figured vet students, of all people, would be left alone.

Meh.

The kind of people these AR movements attract are not exactly paramilitary.

Generally they're about 140lbs, soaking wet, and have severe exercise allergies due to soy narcosis.

Equally, looking at their 1995 website, I don't think they're exactly 'tech-saavy' either. My gmail account is probably safe.

But, if you see anyone shuffling towards you, straining under the weight of a TV harness playing PETA slaughterhouse videos, walk away leisurely for your life.

"Animal rights terrorism
Activists have used increasingly dangerous tactics on researchers whose goal is to save lives."

They may not be paramilitary types, but they are nuts and they often use explosives. Luckily, they don't usually come after people, or their bombs don't work. I'm not interested in doing research on animals personally, but if I were going to work with any animals (especially primates), I would be aware of the potential to run into them and attract their attention.

Guess you missed the 2 firebombings in 2008 in Santa Cruz - one blew up a researcher's car and the other set fire to a different researcher's house.

Guess you missed these, too; oh, yeah, and guess you missed the ones at Oxford University in England (that guy got caught and is appealing his 10year prison sentence):

Guess you missed this: "The Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors U.S. domestic extremism, has described SHAC's modus operandi as "frankly terroristic tactics similar to those of anti-abortion extremists," and in 2005 an official with the FBI's counterterrorism division referred to SHAC's activities in the United States as domestic terrorist threats.[5] In 2009 and 2010, 13 members of SHAC, including Avery, James, and Dellemagne, were jailed for between 15 months and eleven years on charges of conspiracy to blackmail or harm HLS and its suppliers.[6]"

And these: http://www.adl.org/NR/exeres/FE4F29...1A2-02CD-43AF-8147-649E26813571,frameless.htm

And these: the incineration of the millions of dollars in property in Vail, Colorado, and Seattle, Washington, by AR activists.

Not exactly the Manhattan Project there.

Molotov cocktails and ... a box of razor blades?

👍

I just laughed out loud. At work. Had to think up a quick lie to convince my boss that I was definitely working and not perusing SDN.

Very much worth it though. Well done!

You would think. Thing is, vet med encompasses a lot of "controversial fields" like animals used for food and research, among other things. It can also include terminal surgeries, purpose-bred animals that are essentially bred to be euthanized for teaching purposes and stuff of that nature. I don't think those sorts of groups are particular about who exactly they target in these things, since in their minds most of the world is "targetable" in their actions - consuming meat, doing research, using animals for some for or another, etc.

We started having the lockdown thing after some members of another (non-violent) organization apparently came in the school to snoop around. It was right around the whole terminal surgery thing with the Pickens. It made things a mess for a few weeks, so they decided to make all the doors ID only.
