Anyone else still waiting on fall tuition payment?
Yes, I am a first year PA student. A couple of days ago they asked me to submit a summer EVF so they can process the payment to the school. I had already submitted that, but it must've been lost somehow!

I just got word from my financial advisor that the NHSC just sent payment for my Summer and Fall quarters. But it did take a along time..

Does the NHSC program have access to IRS information / the typical financial info we provide on the FAFSA when making their decision? I'm not sure if those things can be seen from the credit checks they do? Sorry, asking as an intended applicant for next year, so still pretty new to everything, thanks for your patience!

The NHSC is a federal program so I’m sure they have access to the information once you provide your SSN, but I don’t think it’s used to determine decisions (unless those factors negatively impact your credit).

To my understanding, the only financial impact that’s considered in the selection process is your credit and if your an applicant from a disadvantaged background. I hope that brings clarity to your situation.

Thank you for your reply. I have taken a look at the disadvantaged portion of the website so I have a better general idea of what this categorization entails.

My parents are looking into purchasing an apt in the year i apply for this program. They do not have any other piece of property. Although you did say they can probably see all this info if they do a background check with my social security number and those within my family, I wonder if this piece of info would have any bearing on the program's decision (perhaps negatively, as it might make me not considered to be "economically disadvantaged")?

Credit reports do not report assets (at least directly). Further, they look at YOUR credit report, not your parents. Much of the disadvantaged status revolves around the past -- the present may have little to none bearing on it. If you can simply check off at least a box from their list you can be considered disadvantaged as long as your school signs off on it.

Hello!
I was recently just accepted to dental school and am very interested in applying for this scholarship. Was hoping someone had some advice on what to do you to gain some valuable experience to be competitive for this scholarship, it would be much appreciated! I am thinking of maybe volunteering at a federally funded clinic but that’s just one idea. Thanks!

That’s a tough question.... you want a lot of leadership and volunteer experience when you apply. I had to list a couple leadership roles and name various organizations that I volunteered for. But even then it’s kinda a toss up on whether or not you get it. There are posts from earlier this year from applicants that have spent years volunteering and have been clinic coordinators for different charity clinics and they still didn’t get accepted. I can tell you what my application looked like but I can’t give you the exact recipe that will guarantee you an acceptance.

Can someone explain how this round system works. I saw previous posts about round 1 finalist then round 2 finalist and round 3 finalist. Can someone explain this? And do all finalists get the scholarship?

Does anyone know when we get ORC? I have received my January stipend but for some reason I though that ORC would be coming along with it.

I got my ORC like back in November, i would check with your school that they submitted a claim for the ORC and then call the NHSC to see whats going on with your repayment.

When I called the headquarter, they said we only get ORC once an academic year.

Does anyone know if we continue to receive our stipend over the summer while not taking classes?

I have a question for reapplicants... how much of your essays has changed from the year before? I havent done much of anything different from my gap year into now my D1 year? the only thing I can think of changing is getting a LOR from a dental school professor but thats about it. is this bad?

Hi all, I’m interested in applying to this program but I know its very competitive. Has anyone ever gotten it with a lower gpa? I am considered financially disadvantaged but idk if that even matter? Also, do you need a letter of rec from a doctor you shadowed or is faculty only ok? Thank you!

I guess it depends on what the GPA is, but if I remember correctly it is pretty low on their scoring methodology. The disadvantaged portion might even more to them than the GPA! They want to know you're committed to staying there after your service is over. If you look at the program handbook I believe they tell you exactly what their priorities are in ranking students.

You need two letters. One from academic faculty (who can speak to your character and desire to serve) and one from someone intimately familiar with your service to the underserved population (supervisor, community service leader, etc.).

Hi again everyone haha
I was wondering why the NHSC checks your credit score? Also, foes it matter if it’s good credit or bad credit? Thank you I couldn’t find anything about that part in the guidebook!

Hi everyone!
i just saw that the scholarship also checks for your credit score? Does it matter if you have a good or bad score? Why do they do that? thank you so much I couldn’t find anything about it in the guide book!
They're checking for red flags likely, not the score itself. Red flags such as defaults and collections.

Is there a thread for 2021-22? I am a current med school applicant and am really interested in this program. I have been accepted too a few schools but my reading of the eligibility requirements, it is unclear to me whether I can apply to the program as an applicant who will have "planned to enroll" in a medical school by April 30 but is not "currently enrolled."

Yes, you absolutely can apply as long as you have been accepted.

Does anyone know the essay prompts from last year?
I'll attach the questions below, but honestly, I would suggest waiting until the application opens to start the essays simply because they changed the questions last year and may or may not change them again. So it could end up wasting your time writing them in advance, if they do in fact change them again. The advice I have been giving people is to really use this time to finalize their resume/CV and secure two recommendation letters. You will get to a part in the application where you will not be able to move forward unless your recommenders have already submitted, so that is going to be super important to ensure as you do not want that to hold you up. You will also have to submit something proving you are a US citizen (ex: passport, birth certificate) and I know those things sometimes take time to retrieve or obtain, so that would be wise to start working on, too!

1. The mission of the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) is to build healthy communities by supporting qualified health care providers dedicated to working in areas of the United States with limited access to care. With this mission, we know that patients often need health care providers to better understand them as a whole. This is particularly important among underserved populations receiving care. Please tell us what does patient-centered care means to you and provide an example.

2.NHSC clinicians provide care to underserved communities in urban and rural areas with limited resources. Please provide an example of when you have proposed an innovative solution to a challenging problem where you had limited resources.
3. Describe an experience in which you have contributed to the well-being of an underserved community and the impact/result of your contribution.

Hello,

I am looking to apply to NHSC scholarship for 2021-2022. I am wondering, since the scholarship acceptance does not come until September (after the health profession school year starts), if you pay tuition out of pocket, does the NHSC reimburse you?

Appreciate in advance!

Hello! They will pay your tuition directly to the school, and then issue you a once-a-year payment called an ORC (Other Reasonable Cost) directly to you. It is basically used to cover all other approved fees that are listed in your cost of attendance. At that point, you can return any loans you have taken out to clear your balance and not owe anything. I hope this answers your question!

Oh okay. But what if instead of paying by student loans, I paid the tuition out of pocket? Then if I receive the NHSC scholarship would they directly reimburse me? Maybe this is more a question I should directly ask the NHSC, but thank you for your input!

Your reimbursement would technically be the ORC, but it would only be for things outside of tuition. They do not make any other direct payments to students besides the stipend, but I would definitely call them to confirm!

As the other poster said, the NHSC only pays students stipend and ORC directly. However, in this case the school would refund you. You pay the school tuition directly, then if you get the scholarship NHSC pays the tuition on your behalf. At that point, the school would refund you the tuition you originally paid them.

Thank you very much! I guess my next question is, do people even get the scholarship who are only going into their M1 year? it seems pretty obvious to me that even if you had done a good bit of work for/with underserved communities, people get MORE of these experiences particularly in a medical setting, in med school. I guess I am just grappling with uncertainty as to whether it's worth it to apply for the M1 year. If anyone has had success or not with this, I would really appreciate your input!

It's definitely worth applying to. I am a D1 and received the scholarship. Just speak to any/all of your past experiences in working with underserved communities.

When do you guys think the application is going to open for this cycle?

For anyone applying this year, here's a great opportunity to learn more about the scholarship from current scholars! 🙂

When do you all think the application for this cycle will be open? I'm surprised it hasn't opened yet because last year I think it opened on March 10th

Is this similar to dental schools where the earlier you apple the better or does it not matter as long as you submit before the deadline

It is not. They will not begin reviewing applications until after the deadline, so there is no incentive to rushing to submit early.

Are the questions the same again this year? I can't see them unless I submit requests for LOR and I haven't gotten that far yet. Figured I would write my essays in the meantime.

yes, they are!

Do they reach out to the people that write our letters of recommendation?

If I am entering dental school this fall, is it possible to apply now and specify that I would only like a 3-year scholarship? Or should I wait until next year?

Yes, you can apply now and I highly encourage you to simply because if you are selected, you can opt to get all 4 years covered. 🙂

Hi everyone! I have a question, I am starting dental school this July and I still have my letters of recommendations in interfolio, can I use the same letters I used for dental schools ? Thank you!!
