NSU-COM Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Group may refer to the fact that (when I interviewed) there are two faculty interviewing each student. It is not so bad so try not to get too worked up over it. I think the calmer, more-professional you behave, the better you will come off. Be ready to roll with anything med school may throw at you because we run into things that we don't like or would like to improve and we just have to roll with it. Good luck everyone!

interviews last year were all one student and two faculty as far as i know. my interview was only about 15 minutes long, nova was by far the shortest interview of all the schools i interviewed.

i dont think there are many group interviews for medical school, meaning a couple faculty and 3-10 students all answering questions at once. i know some other graduate programs that do this but have never heard of a med school doing it
(besides u. of cinci which has a modified group thing they do. its a little bizzare)

Touro-CA did group student interviews it was 4 students vs. 3 interviewers. Nova was 1 student vs 3 interviewers for me.

For those who have interviews.... How quickly did Nova contact you after receiving your application?

I wanted to post here so everyone is not freaking out, what I meant by a group interview is that its you with 3 faculty members that will interview you, at least that is how all of us had it on the 27th.

Just couple of pointers:

1. know about healthcare and have a opinion, everyone in our interview session was asked this question.

2. The interviewers were extremely friendly and they even laughed at one point when I said that I was a nervous talker.

3. If you have any questions, pm me or leave a message on the boards.

Good luck to all of you giving a interview, the school is absolutely amazing 🙂

I was also in on the 27th interviews. I just want to reinforce what djd2187 has said. The interviewers I had were very supportive. I never felt like I was being grilled. Just relax before you go in and you will be fine.

The Healthcare reform question I think is meant to see that you are keeping up with current events relevant to the field and that you have an articulate and intelligent opinion. I got the feeling that “I support healthcare reform, Wahoo Obama!” would not be a satisfactory response. You should be able to provide relevant support of your opinion. What that opinion is doesn’t really matter.

I was very impressed with NSU when I interviewed there. The curriculum appears to be solid, getting students involved with real patients within the first few weeks of classes. The school also has a close relationship with Kaplan providing extra review lectures several times a year for the COMLEX. Medical school facilities on campus are nice, clean, and nearby one another.

A fun fact, the movie “Caddy Shack” was filmed on the NSU golf course on campus. Graduate housing is right on the course.

Oh! One more thing. The admissions office said that we will know if we are accepted within two weeks of the interview. Fast turnaround!

I submitted my secondary on Friday and received a interview notice on Sunday, but this was really early in the cycle and I just had the interview on the 27th.

Is the secondary available online or do they mail it to me? Can I access it now or will they contact me first?

They will contact you first and then you will have to register to get access to the secondary.

Hello peepz

In the email, it says the interview will be held at Terry Building. Does this building have a flippin address? I checked on google maps - negative results. I am using GPS to get there and it would be quite useful.

On another note, I am wondering if you guys could share with me why you would choose NSU over other schools?

For me - it is the nice hospitals we get to chill in 3rd and 4th year and the nice weather.

I found out that the Mayo Clinic has a hospital in Jacksonville. I know that NSU is not affiliated with it but does the school have any type of opportunities with them, directly or indirectly, for some of kind of experience there (electives, etc.)??

Terry Building is 3200 South University Drive, Davie, FL 33328.

Oh and I chose NSU because I wanted to be in a bigger city. I lived in Cincinnati for 6 years for college and after and I really wanted something different. I was so impressed by how happy the students were when I was there. As I learned and got to know more people there, I learned that they really were as happy as they seemed that day. I got into 5 other schools and am so happy I chose NSU. I can't imagine being somewhere else. I do feel like in general they care about their students and want you to do well. It has also been super easy to meet people. It does seem like an open community ready to welcome you in! Haha yea that sounds cheesy but it is great. Good luck and email me with any questions you may have!

I did a group interview for my current job, which was not an enjoyable experience. Speaking in front of people was the issue, however, I walked out that day feeling like the management knew nothing more about me because of the limited amount of questions and constrained time allotted to answering each. Maybe the interview at Nova will be executed better, but I am a little bummed to hear it's not one-on-one.

I had two interviewers last year. It was by far the most laid back and conversational interview I had. The one on one interviews at other schools wound up being much more stressful and less conversational.

They friggin gave lemonade and cookies at my nova interview.

"Did you say cookies.... were they delicious cookies?" (Dr. Cookie monster D.O.)

When does NSU give the first acceptance? Is it after October 15th or whatever like the MD schools?

Does anyone know what the acceptance deposit is for this school? I was having trouble finding it on their website.

So..quick secondary question: It asks for a D.O I've been acquainted with, as well as their "...Institution and date of graduation and where they earned their osteopathic degree". Wouldn't their institution and "where they earned their degree" be the same? Are they asking if they're currently part of an academic institution, or what?

First one is $950 by mid-December and the next is $1050 by mid-March. That may change but thats what it was for us.

Yeah, I dont see what else "institution" could mean for a DO except their school. But, in my case, for institution I put US Army since he is in the military. Then listed the school that granted the degree. I guess just leave it blank if there is nothing you could put.

I put down the company/group they're working for... I don't think it's a huge deal.

You can do an elective rotation anywhere in anything you want. You just need to contact the particular program and set it up.

This is the link to the Mayo clerkship.

On a side note...Nova does offer 3rd year rotations in Jacksonville, Orlando and Tampa.

if you get accepted and pay the deposit, and then get accepted to another school do you get your deposit back? And how long do they give you after an acceptance to decide? Does anyone know if there are single mothers at NOVA

Thanks

at almost every school it is a non-refundable deposit. the deposit goes towards your tuition the next year. when you get an acceptance letter it will clearly state this. the AACOMAS book gives soft deadlines for how long you have to turn it in by but ultimately its up to the school. once again this will be explained when you start receiving acceptance letters at each school.

here's some OMT for you guys!

Is it true that Nova accepts over two thirds of the applicants they interview? Also with regards to wait listing students, do you they do this students who interview early or just outright reject students that they do not want?

Two-thirds has been the statistic for years past, but who knows what it will be this time around.

" 2102 applied, 481 interviewed, 366 were accepted, 228 enrolled"

I guess the Comfort Suites gets really busy with potential Nova grad students who are in town for interviews. Until the hotel's shuttle driver asked me which program I was interviewing for, I forgot that med-students are not the only one's who have to go through this process.

This is the school information page from AACOM:

http://www.aacom.org/resources/bookstore/cib/Documents/cib2010/2010-nsu-com.pdf

(Index for all schools at http://www.aacom.org/people/colleges/Pages/default.aspx)

According to that page, deposit is $2000, non-refundable, and is due according to the AACOMAS traffic guidelines as follows:

Applicants will be requested to submit necessary matriculation documents, including a deposit, according to the following AACOMAS traffic guideline schedule:
• Those accepted prior to November 15 will have until December 14
• Those accepted between November 15 and January 14 will have 30 days
• Those accepted between January 15 and June 14 will have 14 days
• Those accepted after June 15 may be asked for an immediate deposit
• Earliest acceptance date:
• Latest acceptance date: Until class is filled
• Maximum time for applicant to accept offer: 30 days

I scheduled my interview today for the second week of Oct... can't wait!

Congrats to all who got interviews!! That's fantastic! Does anyone want any additional information or meet-up when you come? I thought it would have been great to meet M1s and M2s when I came.

Thanks for the video Link....I was meaning to show it to Eric!! Does Bailey do that?

I just got a DVD from NOVA on how to interview how awesome is that? And not all schools keep your deposit I have applied to a few that return all of it or a portion of it.

Class of 2014 I just don't know where yet😕😕

I'm planning on driving down (2 hours) the afternoon before w/ my "significant other" - well as significant as she can be for a month and a half - pricelining a hotel (got oceanview Hilton last time for $50), and relaxing that night. We might go downtown for a couple hours earlier in the evening just to chill and grab some food. She plays professional golf so she'll probably hit a course around there to practice while I'm interviewing.

i havent heard a peep from nova and they were one of the first schools i sent my secondary to. i have called several times and they are still waiting on my lor's to "upload". anyone else having issues with this bogging down their application?

I've heard the same thing from Western.

I wonder if that's just a line they feed us 😛

yes bailey is VERY good at OMT. especially when i wake up in the morning and he's hungry

I have an interview but my LOR's haven't been downloaded by NSU - although I did get a confirmation from VirtualEvals that my letters were in. I think the whole VE-school interface is slow. They're probably waiting for your LOR's before they make a decision.

anyone interviewing on 10/1?

holy crap - i figured out who ilikefood is!!!!!

also for applicants - there's about 10-15 people that take 10 min naps between classes. these are 3 of them!

Finshed my interview at Nova yesterday. The school is now my number 1 choice and I am hoping to hear a decision in a couple of weeks. I hope it isnt any longer than about 2 weeks, because some say 2 weeks but a lady in admissions said it should be about a month.

I really hope not, because LECOM-Erie wants a deposit by October 1st, which really made me mad because I thought they followed the traffic guidelines. And supposedly they wont budge on that.

By the way....Nova is friggin' amazing!

I completely agree. Yesterday's interview day was very impressive. The only disappointment I walked away with was not being able to see the rest of Nova's campus due to an afternoon storm, but I got to see everything that really mattered.

Best of luck to everyone else who has upcoming interviews at this school!

You won't spend a lot of time outside of HPD. As long as you saw that you should have the info you need! Let me know if there is anything you need or if anyone is still in town.
