I am having a hard time deciding between the two,
NYCOM:
- Driving distance from home (although too long of a drive, will need to find a place)
- Seems like they match quite well & has a great reputation in region
- Family in the area so would be easier to adapt

NSU
- Better facilities
- Better research opportunities? We were told they were building a research center
- I liked the location/people a lot more (I doubt I'll care about the weather after a couple of months)
- No family or friends

I know it depends on the individual but does attending a school in a particular state dramatically increase your chances of residency in that state? Will it be harder to return to the northeast if I go to NSU?

Also, is it possible to declare in-state residency after first year?

The tuition in both schools as well as their match lists are similar.

If you are student in the school or had a similar situation, I would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks!

How much do you like your friends and family?

Both good schools, but Nova has better affiliations and of course, weather

Well I like them but my education comes first. NYCOM would be a comfortable choice but I like NSU more (can't say weather didn't have an influence).

I would be hesitant to go with NSU if it drastically affected my chances at a residency in the northeast

The research center is very nice but still fairly new (not well established yet opportunties questionable at this point) and the hospital won't be ready either. NYIT will be better for northeast residency NSU will be better for south Florida. Also location wise NSU is by an airport (gets loud outside inside it OK) and is indavie which sucks (short drive to las olas and Miami is about the same distance as NYIT to NYC and new York is far superior.

Facilities at Nova are very good but NYIT is fine. I say NYIT due to potential mandatory attendance at nova. And old westbury> Davie

Being from the NSU area and having strongly considered attending this fall, it's definitely a great school and South Florida has its perks. But it sounds like you'll have more opportunities to end up in the northeast if you go to NYIT. NSU is well connected in South Florida but the Broward County health system isn't the best (been through it in more ways than one - as a patient, volunteer, and visitor). Also, I'm sure NYIT is expensive, but so is Nova. And that entire student area is as well. So unless you really think you'd be unhappy at NYIT, I would probably choose that one. In the end, I decided not to attend NSU for more personal reasons and from experiences in that area. Wish you the best of luck in this decision though!

I went to Nova, my wife went to NYCOM (6yr program.) I have much more of a love affair with my school than she does. I matched surgery out of med school in Brooklyn and then switched to EM in the Bronx. Plenty of friends in high quality ACGME and AOA northeast residencies from Nova... but you may never want to leave.

why is new york 'far superior'?

NY and MIA are on complete opposite ends of the spectrum. Not comparable at all really

Thank you for the messages! I also noticed that NYCOM has a 4 week elective option in 3rd year while NSU has electives in 4th year.

If I become interested in a specialty, Am I right in assuming that using the electives to rotate in the specialty in my third year at NYCOM prior to applying to residencies would give me an advantage when applying to residencies as compared to having electives in fourth year at NSU? This would be a major plus point for NYCOM then..
