Hello everyone,
I was taken off the waitlist about 4 weeks ago and not recieved any important mail from nycom yet. I got the deposit letter and email setup (ofcourse!!), but still no word of tuition, fin aid, immunization, not even a welcome packet of some sort. Whenever I call I get an answering machine, no matter what department it is.

I will be driving there today, but since I can't make appointments by phone, I wonder if anyone will be available to help.

I would appreciate any info from you guys as well.

Enjoy the remaining summer days!

From the class of 2010 I know of at least 5 students in the Rego Park/ Forest Hills area. there is probably much more than that in the area and in all of Queens. We commute against rush hour traffic and have some options on the route we take to school which is nice. As was said by others you should know your personality: are you a commuter or not?

The restaurants/bars in Forest Hills do make me wish I was back in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. 🙁 After all I am a gourmand. I cry every night I settle on T-Bone, Tower Diner, or the gourmet restaurant Applebees.

UJ's > T-Bone 🙂

Oh yeah, and did you check out the new Chinese Bakery that opened on QBlvd? $.80 for a roast pork bun...I think I can live off of those

PS: Someone get me off the waitlist please!!!!! /beg 😍

I just got pulled off the waitlist!!!! YEEEEEEHAWWWWW!!!!! 😍👍😍

Glad to see people are getting off from the waitlist. Congrats!!!

A get together in the area..... awesome idea.

Even if its just to come out one evening and chat. I would love to put faces to names and get to know my classmates before it all begins.

I already moved to Glen Cove and Plasticman recommended visiting this small beach in Sea Cliff. I go there almost every evening with my dog, it's really beautiful and quite. She gets to run around without a leash and I get to unwind and get exciting about August 20th.

Anyone wanna join me there for a get together??? PM Me!

I live in Fresh Meadows, Queens and it's really not a bad commute to NYCOM. About 25 minutes on average. Personally, I feel that any trip under 30 minutes is cake and anything under 45 minutes isn't too bad.

On the other hand, I'm used to spending on average about 3 hours a day total commuting from my first job that I had right out of college so 25 minutes a day isn't too bad.

If you really hate driving, get a place close to the school but if you want to save a little bit on rent/live closer to manhattan, most places in the north half of queens aren't a bad idea.

I'd definitely recommend against brooklyn though especially with the new "mandatory class time" we're going to be having.

Last year it was nice to only have to go 2 days a week if you wanted to. Going 5 days a week is going to suck in terms of commuting.

Another thing to keep in mind is that when you start rotations 3rd and 4th year, a lot of them are in the Bronx, Queens, and Brooklyn so living in a place like Queens will actually possibly shorten your commute during 3rd and 4th year.

Hey guys, so my boyfriend came across this article recently and for those of you who haven't had the privilege of reading it should really take a look, not only will it make you feel a little better about starting school but it'll give you something to smile about when you're in the situation.

Hope you enjoy it 🙂

is there a boardwalk there? i was recommended a really crappy "beach" by a waitress at a local diner.

Did anyone else see the orientation schedule up on the webboard now? Seems like we have the first orientation day, then classes start but there are other orientation-y type events going on that week. Why not just have the orientation last a couple days before going into classes? Oh well, still really excited for it.

Hey HunterGatherer...

One person's crappy beach is another's very awesome beach. Yes there is a boardwalk. I like it in the evening when there are few people and I get to take my dog off the leash.

If you guys know any other cool spots in the Glen Cove vicinity let's hear them. 🙂 🙂

quit yer whinin' ;-)

you will have full on total combat med school from day two. get ready for total Kumar-ation in fundamentals. wear protective goggles.

hey, you've got it easy first year. we second years start a week earlier, have an hour or so of updated "orientation" and jump right in. in fact, we have an exam on your orientation day.

i was just on the webboard, and i couldn't see to find anything about an orientation schedule - just the letter. where did you find it?

**nevermind, found it

Welcome to the NYCOM family serencavalier, jp104, and supersash. Can't wait to meet you all in about a month.

We're always at the Wild Fig for food - not expensive and pretty good food IMO. Their smoothies are great in the summer!

I like Downtown Cafe, right on the corner of cedar swamp and school st. On mon/tues/wed they have a special where you get a pasta dish, salad, and dessert for $10.75. On the weekends they frequently have live bands or djs...

Louie's in Port Washington has good happy hour specials from 5-7 during the week... Google it for directions....

The movie theater on School st. has $4 movies on Tuesdays, but not all day, so call to find out which ones.

ooh ditto for the downtown cafe!

i've been dying to go to the barefoot peddler too, it looks like a cute bar, and i love the beachy name 🙂 its right on glen cove rd, closer to NYCOM.

Barefoot is good too. A little on the expensive side, but a great place if you want to run into a certain dean and/or path professor....

hey while were on the topic of drinking...are there drug tests at nycom in the first 2 years...

I was just joking. Dr. fischer does a poll each year with the clickers asking if you ever tried certain controlled substances. No comments on the results. :meanie:

If you are going to do research in some hospitals there may be drug screens. I had to go through a drug screen as a volunteer at NY Presbyterian. The person in charge of my drug screen laughed when she told me "you have no idea how many just don't know when to lie." You still have to pee in cup though.

for the immunizations, is there a specific form that NYCOM sends that needs to be filled out? i think i'm up to date..but would like to make an appt. sooner rather than later..

Anyone else get a bill in the mail? It is the third one they sent me. Do we need a physical before school starts? Many other med schools require it.

just got one today, except this one finally showed my loans.

The one before that showed my loans as well. Are we supposed to do anything with it or if we have student loans we just ignore it?

i believe we just ignore it (anyone from c/o 2010 know for sure?). i also found out today that the remainder of our loans that aren't used towards tuition comes back to us in a refund check to use for other things. i was going to use it for books, but the fin aid woman told me we don't get the check at least two weeks after classes start. so i'll prob just use some other source of money for my books.

if you're not rich and are paying with loans, ignore it. when loans come in they automatically pay it out of them and then give you the remainder as living cost money.

if you are rich and are paying out of pocket, pay it.

I got one too, and the tuition is higher than the bill we got before??

I think you are right. I am confused😕😕😕. I'll call later in the week to find out.

Two first years currently seeking a third roomate to share a 3 bedroom house in Glen Cove, right off of Cedar Swamp Rd., about half a mile (or less) from the train station, Island Fitness, various dining options, and less than 10 minutes from NYCOM. Large kitchen with refrigerator, stove, dishwasher. Living room with fireplace. 1 Full Bath, 1 Car garage with driveway parking, Washer & Dryer, Storage in basement. Private entrance with porch & use of yard (I plan on acquiring a BBQ). Choose from a room with a ceiling fan or a slightly larger room. Rent is $600/month + utilities. Male or female is irrelevant. Non-smokers only. PM me or toss me an e-mail: [email protected]

The higher balance on your bill is because of the recent inclusion of your med insurance (50%) and 100% of your dental insurance.

Hey everyone, I'm in the class of 2011 too...but some of you have mentioned being able to access the NYCOM orientation schedule and other things and I can't do it. I tried to use my nyit connect username and password but this is not working. Is there a different username/password set we must use? Advice?? Thanks

So if we don't need the insurance, and we can't hand in the waiver until orientation, do we still have to pay it and then get refunded for it later?

Is anyone else having problems setting up email and accessing web-board? I am so confused. I am using the generic username and password from NYCOM for the class of 2011 and get an error msg stating that the board can't accept new usres? Any advice???? I am dying to get my hands on the orientation schedule. Thanks

I didn't try setting up my e-mail, but I was able to access the web board. Make sure you are not using caps for the password. It is case sensative.

To set up your e-mail account:
1. Go to the website that is at the bottom of your bill.
2. Click on NYIT Username and Password (on the right side)
3. A new page will open and on the right side, you're going to enter your Student ID (which is on your bill - right below the perforated edge) and your last name, I believe.
4. Then you'll be prompted through the rest.

As for the webboard, how to access that is in one of our letters at home (I don't want to plaster the username and password on SDN). The handbook is on the side left under Orientation Handbook 2011 or something. The schedule and everything is there.

Anyone know anything about eating in the neighborhood? Specifically, are there any kosher options or will I be making meals at home and surviving on hostess cakes for my fixes?

Also, are there any effective travel option out of Queens other than the LIE? I can see that becoming a big hassle now that Ive gotta do the trip 5 days a week...

Anyway, see you all in a month or so. Enjoy whats left of your summers.

Ben's Deli is Kosher and is about half a mile from NYCOM on the corner of Glencove Road and Northern Boulevard in the Wheatly Plaze behind the Starbucks. Lunch will cost you about $10 and everything there is delicious!

You can take the grand central/northern state parkway.

NSP -> Post Rd. Exit. Using post road avoids all the glen cove rd lights and traffic and takes you through the woods and lands you right between NYIT and Post. Sweet shortcut for trafficky times.

Aside from Ben's there are a number of bagel stores in the area which are kosher as well. I've never been a big Ben's fan. The food is overpriced and always makes me sick. I do remember though I was there last year getting lunch when the person behind me ordered a "ham and swiss" and the guys laughed at him and were like, "ok, that was funny, so what do you really want". The kid was really confused and the guys thought he was kidding. Absolutely hysterical.

The LIE shouldn't be too bad in the mornings but in the evening I'd definitely suggest the northern state parkway.

By the way, for some reason, glen cove road always seems to be fast in the mornings and slower in the afternoon. I don't like taking the post ave. exit in the morning but it's great coming home from school. In the mornings I always seem to get caught behind school buses and it seems to take forever. But post road is a great option.

Also, the northern state is under construction now. I hope it gets finished before school starts because I hate driving on those rickety road surfaces and it's causing a bunch of traffic at off hours.

Hmm, that would be a good question to ask the NYCOM Office of Student Services. The Handbooks says the waiver must be on file 2 weeks after the onset of this academic year. There is a good chance you will be given a credit on your student account once you hand in the waiver. Def. check with NYCOM.

i'm pretty sure i'm still covered under my parents dental and health insurance. but can we just wait until orientation to figure out this insurance stuff? i'll be back on LI to pick up my enrollment form or whatever i need. but i don't see the urgency in this now....right? 😕 haha

HAHAHAHA- Now I finally know who you are!!! It was me and my friend and he ordered Ham and Swiss- it was a jewish holiday that day too, right? I remember the line was insane!

on the orientation day they walk you through the forms for waiver etc.

don't sweat it. just make sure you've applied for your loans and gotten your immunization form in and show up on time for orientation, and the rest will be taken care of or explained to you or walked through with you.

they will have you fill out what you need. no worries.

and again, as for money. if you're paying out of pocket, pay. if not, don't sweat the bills you're getting. it'll be fine.
