NYCOM Class of 2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
yup i just wrote on the event wall about the preunion

haha ill be working until the 15th cause i need to make as much money as possible... just in case 😀

The orientation schedule and security/parking info are posted in the Class of 2012 webboard. 😉

When are they going to post the book list on the webboard?

From what I read from the previous class threads, it's probably going to be posted early August.

When are they going to post the book list on the webboard?

it looks NYCOM is starting to get their act together for the coming school year, because they finally emailed the second years yesterday about our schedule for the coming year. not that they told us what it is - they teased us just enough by telling us they will be posting it this week, maybe, probably, hopefully. but dont worry too much about the book list when u see it - its huge! u wont need most of the books listed for more than a few pages of reading here or there and some of the books will never even be opened.

haha yeah i heard it was like around 25+ books :scared:

sooo I used my student ID to setup my email account and NYIT Connect and I was looking through the financial aid stuff and I found out by clicking on Financial Aid by Year that I got a NYCOM grant of $475. So there is a little genorosity! lol. Anyways I think it's for people who borrowed a Stafford loan through NYCOM.

oh eugene... you probably can find out if you're stafford loan has been "approved" or at least shown that you have accepted the loan for NYCOM to take. I know you've been worried so I thought I point that out to you. 😀

Log on to NYIT Connect --> Click on NYITConnect Students Menu --> Under Financial Aid Information click on Financial Aid Status By Year --> Then select 2008 and click submit --> Then it should say your anticipated aid and whether you have accepted it or not.

Any news on when us 1st years will get our schedules? The orientation schedule doesn't say much.

yep i did that. thanks!

is anyone else having problems logging onto the webboard? i used the the username and password that the director of student life mailed to us, but i keep getting a message saying that the website is not accepting new users...is there any other way to get the info posted there? I already set up my nycom email account, but they haven't emailed the info there. I'm worried I'll miss important info, like reading assignments (if there are any and i really hope there aren't!!!). PLEASE HELP!!!

Maybe you can call Admissions or even IT...?
PM me if that doesn't work, I can send you the stuff that's on there.
No worries though, there aren't any reading assignments, and the stuff on there is not ridiculously useful.

Is anyone else getting only a Stafford subsidized this year? Apparently, each year, you're not allowed to get subsidized and unsubsidized from different lenders. So basically I'm going to have to pick a lender now for the next 4 years because I'll be taking out unsubsidized next year and to have a different lender from year to year might be annoying. Any advice?

i just logged into the webboard, it should be no problem. ill PM you the username and password ... you have caps lock on?

aaaand don't worry about anything to do with med school right now. there will be absolutely no reading assignment whatsoever. enjoy the summer! The only forms that are posted right now are the waiver and the enrollment health insurance forms. You really don't need that either because they will have it ready on the 1st day of orientation and that's where it's done anyways. Posting the form now will just save you a minute in filling out the form ahead of time. The orientation schedule is up to, but it's not much you need to know. The handbook, fyi, is on the student resources page at the NYCOM site:

Yeah just borrow from NYCOM. I got both Stafford loans and they gave me a grant from borrowing from them. I hope you already applied for it, otherwise do it NOW. They might not have your funds ready if you apply too late and I think it's really late if you haven't done so. good luck! :luck:

I'm not sure if I'm going to help you here, but from my understanding all Stafford loans that you take out will be BOTH subsidized and unsubsidized. I am going through SallieMae (aka. the NYCOM lender) and 85% is subsidized and 15% is unsubsidized. If you are going to be taking out extra loans, such as the GRAD plus loan, I believe that is all unsubsidized. Secondly, my opinion would be to stick with one lender that you like for the next four years, it may save you some stress down the road. I personally chose NYCOM as the lender, because I feel that, if anything, they'd have an invested interest in helping us through any problems that might arise with our loans.

well said sliz 👍

MAJOR CORRECTION:

In a past post I said that it was 85% subsidized...I completely got this wrong. It is much worse. THE CORRECTION: Of the total amount of loans you take from NYCOM (aka Sallie Mae) $8500 is subsidized, so of the total Stafford you would be taking out for tuition (about 42,000) it comes out to be about 19% is subsidized, and 81% is unsubsidized. As for the GRAD Plus loan, 100% of that is unsubsidized.

Sorry for the misinformation above. I must have heard 85% instead of 8500, so I basically just found out today that I will be paying alot more interest than expected. But i did see the new Batman movie, so all-in-all a good day.

haha i just realized you put 85% subsidized. i wish!

it's a good thing though that they increased the aggregate limit of the stafford loans; otherwise, we'd all have to take out Grad Plus loans towards our 4th year which is at 8.5%

tdk can really make you forget about everything. what a great movie

Thanks, flyintiger and slizfoshiz. I was also looking at other lenders besides NYCOM, though. Yeah, (for unsub) I get the grant and no default fee with NYCOM, but places like Citi were offering benefits like interest rate reductions and paying your 6 final payments if all the others were paid on time... But because the market is as it is right now, I don't know if those benefits are going to stay. Basically, I'm wondering if no fees < down the line benefits and if so, who did people choose?
I thought I was done with this lender junk when I decided not to take out an unsubsidized! Damn it!

Would the other half of the Health Insurance come from out of pocket?

Would the other half of the Health Insurance come from out of pocket?

The other half of your health insurance bill is on the other half of your tuition bill.

So in your case, whenever your GRAD plus loans disburse... unless they give it all to you during the fall? I don't know enough to tell you, but basically the time you pay the 2nd half of tuition is when you pay the other half of your health insurance.

The GRAD Plus loans are given to you bi-yearly, so whatever you requested for GRAD Plus, you will get half in Sept. and the other half in Jan.

i'm not sure how many of you are in this predicament, but i never received a financial aid award letter. when i logged into the NYIT Connect, i realized that my address was incorrectly listed. it was correct on my master promissary note, but incorrect at NYIT/NYCOM.

in that case, call or email financial aid and they can get you your information. i find that calling early in the morning is much more successful than calling after lunch.

i never got a letter either, but my info comes up on NYIT Connect as 'accepted' and on Open Net (Sallie Mae?) whatever that website is through nycom financial aid page also says my loans went through but i never got a physical letter and my address is spot on.

dont worry imo. build strength young padawan for the orientation imo

Quick question for those who are good at math... so the stafford loan alone won't cover the tuition, is it like someone else mentioned that we are 1000$ short? I don't know if it is worth it to take the extra $1000 from GradPlus. I do have some savings and will probably cover my first two years living expenses.

Alright to switch it up a bit...

I want to know about GYM-ness. I know that NYCOM has a gym and that some people use it, but I only got to see it once. So my question, to anyone that knows, is whether students use the NYCOM gym or get memberships elsewhere, and what are peoples opinion on doing either?...Also, for those from LI, what membership gyms are close to nycom that are nice to go too?

From talking to people during my interview, it seems like most people have memberships to other gyms like Planet Fitness in Glen Cove which is like 20 bucks a month (but 10 bucks a month for nycom students so it's about $120 or so per year). Although, I don't know if there's an initiation fee.

I'm planning to go to the YMCA in Glen Cove because I'm a swimmer and need a pool lol. Also, it's 2 miles from my apt. It's $290 per year plus the $75 intiation fee. So it's about $30/month if you include the fee otherwise it's $24/month. (Oh I forgot that $290 is for students 18-22 so I barely made it otherwise its $575 per year ick!!!)

There's another one called Equinox in Roslyn which is f***ing expensive. wowow. I think it's about $150/month and I forgot if there's an initiation fee or not. Regardless, it's damn expensive. I rather buy my own elliptical and weight set.

I don't think it's worth it. The interest will add up and it's 8.5%. If you can, you should work out a way to split the money you have for your 2nd year living expenses and put it in a 9 month of 1 year CD. That way you can accumlate some interest rather paying up interest.

has anyone seen the newish basketball & tennis courts by the parking lot? maybe i didn't see them when i interviewed during that BLIZZARD in december, but they look new and nice.

is there another gym somewhere else on the NYIT campus?

FlyingTiger, YMCA has a gym along with the pool right? I also swim.

i used to swim & play water polo. perhaps now is the time to revive my long lost love.

congrats to all!!! EVERYONE!!! see you guys there in like... < 3 weeks 🙁

Do we need to manually pay the tuition by ourselves or the school will automatically charge from the financial aid? NYCOM keeps sending me bills...it's really annoying. 🙁

if you have stafford, grad plus, or any federal loans, it should be automatically taking care of. Yeah hearing from the classes before, they've been sent numerous bills. Don't worry 🙂

I got pulled off a waitlist but had already secured a room in glencove. It is 11 X 11 with decent closet space. The rent is 500, which is solid for Glen Cove. The best part? You will be living with three other first years at NYCOM, who are all cool and laid back. 10 minute drive away from school. The house is sweet, with brand new kitchen appliances, a deck, and a big back yard. The room is available immediately, but the rent fro August is already paid. PM me if you are interested.

heyy so i just wanted to remind anyone that decides they dont want to go to nycom to give them a call and give up the seat...its so hard to get the wait list moving this year and every call makes a really big difference...thanks so much and congrats to everyone wherever ur going! 😀😀:hardy:😀😀

The schedule for 1st year so far has been:
Monday OMM lab 8am-10am(A1) or 10am-noon(A2) and 9am-noon Anatomy lab (B1 and B2)

Tuesday lectures from 8am-5pm. 1 hour break at noon. sometimes starts at 9am.occassionally ends at 2pm or 3pm.

Wednesday OMM lab 8am-10am(B1) or 10am-noon(B2) and 9am-noon Anatomy lab (A1 and A2)

Thursday same as Tuesday

Friday 8am-noon. sometimes start at 9am

this is the general schedule. DPR is usually 9am-noon on one Tuesday or Thursday approxiamately every 3 weeks.

class is split up into 4 equal groups: A1, B1, A2, B2. Includes all students: DPC(case based learning), lecture, and emigre.

Exams are every 4-7 weeks. and you usually get 1 review day followed by 2 study days without classes before each exam.

I've met people commuting from Brooklyn, Queens, and Whitestone. Try to get to class early on days with attendance in case there is traffic since you will have to retake the class in the summer if you miss it or are more than 10-15 minutes late.

I'm unsure of how often the DPC students meet.

:luck:

There ya go! 🙂 We'll find out more soon.

Thanks FlyingTiger, ....not too bad, very do-able.

FYI, that is from the 2010 first year class, not the 2011. The 2011 was somewhat more rigorous now that you have more tests (we only had 1 per system). For fundamentals they pretty much had class 8-5 m-f. They'd have to fill you in on more details.

yeah I was just posting that to give a semi-feel for it. seems like they cranked it up a bit.

DESPERATELY SEEKING ROOMMATE! I was accepted at another school and decided to go there instead. I have a really nice room in a 3 bedroom 2 bath apt in Glen Cove. $575 a month. heat, water and 2 awesome roommates included. message me for details. Thanks

Hello Class of 2012,

I am a 3rd year and wanted to post a few things for sale. Not sure if your booklist has been made available yet but some of these are required texts and others I found very useful throughout my 1st 2 years at NYCOM.

1) Histology- A Text and Atlas. 5th Edition by Michael Ross & Wojciech Pawlina (ISBN: 0781750563) Good Condition; Slight watermarks of 1st few pages but doesn't affect ability to read text. $45.00

2) Grant's Dissector. 13th Edition by Patrick W. Tank (ISBN: 0781758483)
Excellent Condition; No cadaver juice because this book was never taken into Anatomy Lab. $10.00

3) Microcards- Review for Medical Students. 2nd Edition by Sanjiv Harpavat & Sahar Nissim (ISBN: 0781769248) Good Condition; Neat highlighting on some cards. $20.00

4) Netter's Anatomy Flash Cards by John T. Hansen (ISBN: 1929007086) Excellent Condition. $25.00

*** Buy all 4 items together for a total of $90.00! ***

I am doing most of my rotations in Brooklyn and LI so PM me if interested and we can arrange a meeting time/place. Thanks!

what all are we getting at orientation? i feel like its just a bunch of speakers. Do we need to bring anything? do we need to dress up? do we register for classes then? and when do we get our money from financial aid? (as in we took out more loans than needed for tuition this semester and we need the left over money for living expenses.)

also once classes begin, can we wear regular street clothes to class? i remember reading something somewhere about no street clothes but i cant remember what that pertains too...

i guess thats more than just questions about orientation.....

thanks ppl!

From what I have gathered from all these previous posts and talking to other upperclassmen, it does not seem like orientation is anything of a big deal. It's only a one day long event where we get to wait on long lines to get pictures taken, to get parking passes, to get our paperwork and other clerical stuff dealt with. I honestly don't think you need to dress up, that is unless you want to look nice and spiffy for your nycom ID. I have no idea about the Fin Aid stuff, maybe call the Fin Aid office to answer your questions? As far as bringing stuff, I would suggest to bring yourself, a pen, notebook, a sweater (apparently the lecture halls can get really cold), and forms that you need to take care of (such as insurance waver forms and parking pass forms). I don't think there is an option as to what classes we take first year. We all have to take the same classes which start with fundamentals. So I dont think you need to worry about registering for classes like you did for undergrad.

From what others have told me, there is no dress code at NYCOM, that is you don't need to dress all fancy during class. A tee shirt and jeans will do just fine. You do need scrubs for anatomy and will need the apporate clothes for OMM class (that is all written in the handbook that is on our class of 2012 webboard page)

Dress comfortably, but wear something you'd want to be photographed in. Conservative is probably best but you don't need to wear a suit or anything. For example, I wore khakis and a polo last year. You will be taking your photo id picture that day.

Your financial aid should be ok first day of class but disbursements take a while to come through. I believe it took a week or so when we started last year.

You don't need to bring anything except for your driver's license and car registration if I remember correctly. You will need them to fill out the paper work for the parking sticker.

Bring reading material in case you guys have a cluster**** of an orientation like we did. We waited about 5 hours in line to take photos. On the flip side, it makes for a great social bonding session

If I remember correctly, lunch is served the first day so you don't need to bring food. Bring some cash just in case you need to go to the cafeteria to pick up food.

You can wear pretty much anything you want to class the first day 🙂 A lot of us regularly go to class in jeans/tshirts. You really won't want to wear shorts in the lecture halls though. It gets REALLY cold in there. Bring a sweatshirt with you to class when you start lectures.

Just a tip for the first years and parking, you don't need the "required" bumper sticker on your car to use the nycom parking lot. I haven't put that thing on my car and haven't gotten a ticket yet. I don't use other parking lots, so im assuming the NYIT police checks for it out there.

Book list is on the webboard for those who are interested lol

:scared:

oh and dont buy any of it!
