That is a staggering stat. Should have been mentioned and underscored in "Asians at disadvantage?" thread and other URM-oriented threads.

Even this is an over-estimate. It includes many who self-identified who were actually North African and "other."

Really? Where do you estimate the true number to be? For as much as people complain about URMs in admissions, I can't imagine the already small number to be even smaller.

As one screens thousands of applications over several years, you begin to notice that self-identification dramatically over-estimates the number that would generally be recognized as African-American.

So what happens to people such as North Africans who identify as African Americans but who really arent for admission purposes? Are they viewed unfavorably for the preception of being "disingenous or dishonest" and if so is it a significant negative to their application?

It is hard to know which applicants are actually disingenuous, but like other ambiguous data, there is the likelihood that individual examiners may presume the worst.

Well even if you presume they are not disingenous and that this was more just an honest mistake on their part, would it still have a negative impact on their application? I guess my question is even if they dont presume the worst, can the effect still be negative? AS an example when someone sends an update letter to a school that doesnt want updates its perceived as "you can't follow instructions", could their be a similar effect for someone who incorrectly lists the group to identify themselves with even if the mistake is honest?

I know how much we are generalizing here so if the best you can say is itll vary by individual evaluator that's fine, I'm just wondering if there's any general trend/observation you can make about this in your years of experience.

I can say that the effect is more likely to be negative than positive.

503 MCAT which is probably why I am not getting any interviews I think 🙁 3.7 Masters science gpa, undergrad gpa wasn't the greatest (due to medical reasons which I explained in my app)

Sorry for being unprofessional, it's just this "URM, ORM, XYZRM" topic gets brought up everywhere, and it devolves posts into pedantry and semantics virtually without fail.

At what point do you figure out the self-identification was wrong? During the interview? Secondaries?

Sorry! You're right. On the thread topic, it sure seems like there are a very large number of good to very strong applicants who are not having a lot of luck. Very discouraging to hear about but obviously much worse to live through after working so hard towards the goal. An increasing concern of mine is that schools are so inundated that a decent percentage of apps are not getting even the initial review they deserve, and that the concept of "donations" has now expanded well beyond the idea of applying to schools one has no shot at (on the front end). Of course, perhaps this is the same lament every year and I just don't know that.
 
and now after this brief intermission, let's get back to our regularly scheduled program of "interview-less"

those are only MD. DO I have applied to 11 but I am wondering if I should add more (are we allowed to add more after we submitted the application? their deadlines are in February and seeing as I have been getting rejections/no news I might as well add more - what do you guys think?)

That conversation was entirely relevant and informational. No need to apologize. Some people are on edge, I suppose. Saying things like that is counterproductive to the optimistic nature this thread is supposed to have.

it truly boggles my mind how many american premeds lament the fact that they are not black or latin@ in a country rife with structural racism that actively works against those groups so that barely any even reach the point where they have all the components necessary to apply to medical school under their belt. sorry the cycle has been looking bleak for you so far, but try to not use minorities as a scapegoat for your own personal shortcomings. it's honestly disgusting and totally ignores/belittles the struggle that URMs endure during the application cycle as well. what makes you think it's all cupcakes and rainbows for URMs? i thought this thread was about solidarity, not solidarity just for non-URMs.
 
I know a good amount of us are September/Late August completers. I think something to keep in mind in this regard is that it's not been that long since we were done. Heck I see people getting IIs who were down in July.

Not to be pessimistic, but at this point, I don't think it matters when you were complete. All applications have probably been reviewed by this point at the vast majority of schools.

I know at least at UVM and VCU that probably isn't the case, they are so far behind. But I am sure at the rest of the schools you are correct!
 
I was complete in mid-July to mid-August and I have received four interview invites between late December and yesterday. If you haven't been rejected or put on hold, I firmly believe that you are still in the running. I know others who are in a similar boat. So, from my own experience and that which I know of from my friends, I deem the "no interview by Thanksgiving = no interview at all" rule shenanigans. Whether or not these interviews will translate into an acceptance is another story, but I remain cautiously hopeful.

We all have to eat our humble pie and accept that for whatever reason, we were not the first choice of the medical schools. Why is that? I have absolutely no idea. But you know what they call someone who gets accepted in February, March, or April? A medical student.
 
Addendum to my above comment: although I firmly believe that interviews will continue to be doled out until March or so, I also believe that this is an appropriate time to think about Plan B. I myself will be starting as a scribe in April if I don't get in anywhere, and if I do get in I have a job for the summer. No harm, no foul. So for me, the worst case scenario is that I don't get in anywhere, spend two months with some intense clinical experience, and reapply on June 1, 2016.
 
I know I posted this before in another thread, but does anyone know if Quinnipiac and University of Vermont sends "application complete" emails? Just want to be sure as my application to another school fell through the cracks and they marked me complete two months later.

I did not receive "application complete" emails and the portal for Vermont indicates that I am currently under review. I can't find the portal for Quinnipiac. The same thing happened to me...I was marked complete in October for a school that I submitted the secondary to in July.

Quinnipiac doesn't. I got an II at Quinnipiac and I just checked the communication tab. No "complete" email.

thanks for letting me know. Vermont says the same thing for me. I am just paranoid now because the same thing happened to my friend, even though she submitted in July. She was marked complete NOW, and she called the school(can't remember what school it is) and they told her it was an error made by the secretary but there's nothing they can do about it and all interview slots are filled.

Similar thing happened to me at one of my state schools.. I completed the secondary in July and was marked complete in November
 
A single pre-II rejection was the only thing that happened to me this week. Silence from still ~25 schools. Starting to feel like the only "active" week for me will be the last week of March. 🙁

I'm already six years out from undergrad so the thought of a second application cycle makes me feel rather nauseous.

Im six years out, with this being my third cycle. imagine that pain! but I completely understand where you are coming from - this really bites.

I got nothing this week either, but neither did anyone else according to the threads I troll. Jefferson and Temple are due for some IIs some time this month and I just hope I'm part of it.

No news from Jefferson. I sent in an update and didn't get a rejection so that's a start! I suspect we will see lots of IIs from them in the week or two.
