Official 2015-2016 Pulm/CCM Fellowship Application Cycle

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I haven't gotten any interview invites yet. It's been 2 days, so I assume all hope is lost. I will be signing up for one of these amazing primary care jobs that I've been getting emails about for over a year. Primary care in Eastern Montana sounds pretty good, right??? LOL

Once you match, those recruiting emails/phone calls will be different .... will be for pulm/ccm position (and the offers will be double what you're getting right now, with fewer hours of work) .... however, be careful ... as with any job, you will work for that income

Good luck to all who are applying. I might see some of you on the interview trails :ninja:

Hey guys
folks, who already received interview, do you mind sharing your credentials / publications here on this forum, so that rest can have some idea.

Thanks

Sure.
US grad. At a program on the east coast. Not chief. Pretty good USMLE scores. 3 publications from college and medical school- pretty high impact factor journals but not related to pulm at all. Everything I'm working on now is ongoing. Very surprised by my interview invite; no relation to the program at all. Relieved to get an invite but this really isn't meant to make anyone else nervous. It's still so early.

Hey quick question.

I am an IMG from a small community program. I only applied to 10 programs around my area for personal reasons.
Wondering my competitiveness or chances at all since I am limited geographically.
Average Step Scores. Not chief.
I am first author on 2 peer reviewed manuscripts w Pubmed IDs that have nothing to do with PCCM.
Currently writing a case series.
Presented at ATS, CHEST, ACP (all poster presentations). Posters at a few other medicine meetings.
I have a few good letters (I hope at least).
Some ongoing research, nothing spectacular.

Wondering about programs I applied to in Houston (Baylor, UT), Galveston, Shreveport, New Orleans (Tulane/LSU), Mobile, and Jackson.
Looking for clinical program with some research if possible.
If anyone has any info about them (competitiveness/criticism) it would be greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't count on Baylor as an IMG, but I can't speak for the rest...

Forgot to add I have greencard.
Do not need a visa.

Thanks again.

Just got my second invite - University of Arizona. Yes, at 11:49pm EST - count that however you want! 🙂

Just finished submitting everything, so I can officially join the application cycle party! Awesome to see some of you already collecting the invites!

Did anyone apply to Geisinger? Did anyone else receive an acknowledgement of being overwhelmed by number of applications and receive a questionnaire asking more about you similar to the previous year?

Yes, I got the same email. Do you mind telling me your credentials?

Hi guys, I received email from Geisinger too, asking me to respond to the questions. I have no idea what this means, Did thy send this all the applicants or only for those shortlisted?

Probably they don't want to spend time on reading those personnel statements I guess.

Thank you everyone in this thread again (it has been helpful)
So I did a quick search about whether when programs say 3 letters, should we include a fourth one anyway since there is no wording such as "at least" or "maximum" prior to it?
Results came from jdh71:

ERAS gives you the option to add four letter to the application you send. Just add all four of your letters. Programs that only want three will just download the first three letters so make sure your IM PD letter is the first you attach and that number two and three are letter you either know to be good or think will be.

The previous year, you had mentioned this however for a similar question:
If they are asking for three letters INCLUDING PD letter, then unless my math is off, that means THREE letters total.

I know this may be over the top but to relieve my anxiety, I am thinking doing what you had mentioned in the first part that makes more sense? Thanks!

Hm interesting point. I would like to know the answer as well. I attached 4 letters to every program (most programs did say at least 3 letters with some exceptions). My PD letter is listed as last on the assignment report. Does this mean for the programs that only download 3 letters, they will not see my PD letter??

Breathe. They'll figure it out.

Unless programs strictly tell you ONLY 3 letters, send 4 if they're worth sending.

I don't think the program will not download a 4th letter, they might choose to review only 3 in which case the program directors is a separate marked letter and will be reviewed. IMHO.

I agree with CritiPulm.
I dont think we have control on making sure PD's letter remains in first 3 letter , that programs download. If you go to assignment report, which shows all documents assigned to program, my 4 letters are listed alphabetically, I assigned my PD's letter last, but it shows there as first. Program may see the same order.
IMHO.

Quick Q: Had spelling mistake in my PS, edited it and the file tracking changed from available to updated with the new date. How will the program know about this update? and will they have the old and the new one if they got the updated one?

Thanks. Mine are listed alphabetically too. I'm sure this will not be the dumbest thing I stress out about during this app season.

There is no way you can find that out. Till last year there was a way to find out if program downloaded your application or not. This year that feature is gone. So, if the program already had downloaded your application, they already have your old version, and, when they come back to download more applications, they will see that yo have updated your PS. Depends on program whether want to download your PS again or not. If any program has not downloaded your application yet , for whatever reason, you are good, they will get your updated PS.
I would say, dont worry about it at all, just chill.

I think they can it says " (PD)" next to PD's letter. Any program will look at the PD's letter while reviewing the application. I think this is not a big deal

Got my first rejection from Tulane University coz of visa status.
They stated that they are unable to interview me due to my H1B status even though I mentioned in the application that I will accept to J1.
My understanding is that I can change visa status from H1B to J1 if needed in case the program doesn't support, but not to offer interview just because I am on H1 visa now.

can some one shine some light on this please. Thanks in advance

Some programs explicitly state that they don't accept those currently on H1B, even though they agree to switch to J1. Some replied the same when I enquired about the possibility to switch. I don't see an obvious reasoning for this - J1 for fellowship requires a brand new visa and a "statement of need". It shouldn't matter at all for the program, but it does.

Quiet morning too after a very long weekend.
I think for IMGs we have to wait at least 2 weeks before anticipating anything

Confirmation from Baylor that they received my application, Finally! :poke:

I also got that confirmation... after my interview invite, which I thought was pretty awesome. 🙂

You got a interview from Wash U but rejected by Tulane.

Did you apply for their critical care only program? They haven't sent out their pulmonary & cc interviews offers yet.

He is just summarizing the list up there! Not listing all his interviews/rejections.

similar situation for me today, pretty excited for my first interview invites (Maryland, Wake Forrest, Baylor Houston)!! If anyone happens to have gone to medical school or residency at any of these locations and has some insight, would love to hear it (esp Baylor as I'm more familiar with the midwest/east coast locales...)

Hey, are these interviews (WashU, Baylor, Wake Forest) for P/CCM or just CCM?

thank you
francisco
