Penn - all interview spots full at this time
I send hand-written thank you notes. I don't expect it to impact my ranking, and if I didn't send any I don't think it would impact my ranking. However, it is what I consider good manners, so I do send them. I send them because I'm genuinely thankful for the time taken and the opportunity, and this is the way I was taught to say thank you. If it isn't something you consider doing important, maybe just don't do it? I don't think it would affect you either way.
Are you a current applicant or applying in the future? As a current applicant you would contact programs to let them know about your ties to the region. For ppl getting interviews based on region. Any advice on how to make yourself more competitive for a specific region?
What do you mean? For those of us getting interviews based on region, I would think by definition that means having significant ties to the region. If you mean how do you get interviews in regionally biased places when you have no ties to the area (i.e. Texas, California), probably away rotations and letters of interest.

As a future applicant, if possible list different current and permanent addresses (ie, use your parents address as your permanent) which will get you through more geographic filters if you went somewhere else for med school. If you have no ties to a region at all an away can help get a foot in the door.
So you think living in a region or having your perm address be in that region is helpful?
I'm a future applicant. I'm trying to basically match in around a 2 hour area of the DMV. 4-5 hours maybe too.
its been slow around these parts
Has anyone heard from Penn State Hershey, either way? I emailed and heard nothing back and see here that nobody has posted an interview.
Edit: I see a couple in the Google spreadsheet from mid-Oct, my bad.
May I ask where? Can't seem to find it. If you could post the link it would be greatly appreciated
Seriously, how are they going to rank us after the interview? or how important is the interview unless you are a weirdo?
Curious about the process too. Are we ranked before interviews and then shifted based on interview? Any insight about the process would be helpful.
Sometimes I think we should just throw all the apps up in the air and rank them as they fall...I’m wondering about the post-interview ranking process, too. Aside from the outstanding applicants and/or applicants who are just a perfect fit for the program, I cannot imagine how the rest of the applicants - accomplished on paper and perfectly nice in person - will be ranked. Which is to say, I appreciate the difficulty of the job.
Do not underestimate how much can be gleaned from the brief interview. I always screen out a few psychopaths each year via interview (im sure others are missed). Here are the things we cat get from your interview: your interpersonal and communication skills, your commitment and interest in psychiatry and working with the mentally ill, whether you would be a good fit for the program, how much you actually know about the program and your level of interest coming here, and whether you have leadership potential. The interview also provides a chance for a more in depth review of your application and for certain applicants a chance to explain any deficiencies and highlight any strengths. So far my IVs have been super chill. Just couple of my interviewers took some notes after my responses but other than that they all tried to sell the program and know little bit more about me. I started to wonder what will come into a play when the time comes for ranking? They are just super-nice to everyone.
There are some programs that are known for coddling their residents. And there are a lot of applicants that seem to want surrogate mothers/fathers in the program directors. there are those programs out there, but such applicants would not be a good fit for large unwieldy departments where that level of support does not exist. conversely there are people who would feel suffocated and annoyed at being at programs where there's all that coddling and hand holding. Hopefully no program expects beginning residents to work independently - ideally there should be a gradation in supervision so interns receive a lot of supervision and senior residents largely fly solo with more targeted input to hone their skills.Hi Splik, What do you mean by handholding and parenting? Ability to work independently?
I believe that it means that you may or may not receive an interview depending on whether there are cancellations.Ok. This is driving me crazy, so I guess I'll just ask here and stop speculating...
One program has placed me on "hold" and another two have placed me on "waitlist"... what the hell does this mean? Is there a realistic chance of being called for an interview?
Hello! I have an interview at Case Western Reserve University Hospitals on 12/15 that I would like change it with 12/01, 12/6 or 12/08. Does anybody have an iv on these dates and is willing to change?

Congrats on the interview invites! Are you an US-IMG?I have 3. ( gone to 1) plus some waitlists. (Only applied at 70)
My friend with almost identical stats (same school, both step scores within <5 pts. He has 8, but he applied to more and he did not exclude NYC). He and I are both also waiting for cs scores.
Thank you for the congrats. Instead of focusing on there being only three, I'm just trying to make them the best 3. And yes, I am an IMG. (More specifically a US-Big3 Caribbean ms4 non-traditional)Congrats on the interview invites! Are you an US-IMG?
