**Official 2025 PERIO PASS/Interviews/Match/Non-Match/Information**

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congratulations on everyone that matched, and best of luck to those that will be reapplying next cycle!

For this cycle, there are no post match positions available. Perio is becoming a very competitive specialty, and there are more and more applicants every year.

hey guys....hope a lot of you matched with the programs of your choice! I was not as lucky 😉 am looking to find out who matched perio in Oklahoma and West Virginia...any leads please hit me up!

Happy Thanksgiving, friends.

I didn't match into Perio this year. I received 5 interviews from the 10 schools I applied to around the East Coast. Bc I wanted to stay in the area. However, no dice. I am planning on reapplying. Should I apply to a GPR/AEGD program or work in Private practice?

- There aren't very many programs left this cycle, and they arent very good except nyu lagone.

- As for private practice, I have two different uncles with very productive offices that I could work at.

Thank you so much for the help!

GPR or AEGD will improve your application and would give you another individual to obtain a reference letter from in an academic setting.

I would work in private practice and make money. The fact you received 5 interviews tells me you are more than qualified, but your interviewing skills probably need work. How do you think the interviews went?

Hi everyone! I received an email from one of the periodontics programs saying they would include me in their rank list for the match.

Should I expect similar emails from all the programs that plan to rank me, or is it not common for schools to notify applicants? I’m worried that programs that haven’t sent an email might not be ranking me. Could it be that this one school just reached out as a courtesy?

Happy Thanksgiving, friends.

Hi,

Sorry to hear you were not accepted. I agree with customx that you have are qualified given the 5 invitations you received, and might have a better chance next cycle.

I'm curious: you stated that a perio program emailed you about being in their rank list for match, did you decline to rank this program?

Not gonna lie, this thread’s been quieter than a Sunday morning clinic, but let’s change that!

At this time, it seems like most people have either matched into a perio residency or committed to a back up plan. I wanted to open the discussion for those that will apply (or re-apply) next cycle. Unfortunately, this thread has not been active like the other specialty threads, so I wanted to change that.

Are there any questions from future applicants about perio? Questions about schools? What should someone look for in a program? Chances of being admitted? Anyone is welcome to ask or give advice (even lurkers can jump in).

I’m planning to apply this cycle to the following programs: UCLA, UCSF, West LA VA, and USC. What are the overall thoughts about these programs? I graduated from NYU in 2023 and have been in practice for a little over a year now. I’m looking for more complexity in cases and greater challenges in dentistry.
To strengthen my application, I’ll be doing an externship at UCSF and am in contact with the above programs to visit if time permits. My CV and personal statement are done, and I have secured recommendation letters from:
1. A faculty member at one of these programs whom I’ve worked with in private practice

2. A private practice periodontist

3. A prosthodontist from NYU who is highly involved in academics and teaching

For some additional background, I completed both my undergrad and master’s on a full scholarship, earning awards totaling over $80K and presenting at multiple conferences. My dental school GPA was 3.58, placing me around the top 50% of my class.

Would love to hear your thoughts!

Hello I am a rising D3 potentially interested in applying to perio residency. I was wondering what the stats are of those applying or who have applied to know if I would be a competitive applicant

I also did not see a thread for the 2026 year yet to follow

Feel free to start one and link this one. A group of us (incoming perio residents) are working on a doc with contact info and other resources to make this process easier. Best of luck to you. It is a great specialty

Hi everyone, I’m a second time applicant after unfortunately having no interviews last year. Just wondering if anyone had any tips on applications or securing interviews that they could share. Appreciate it’s a very competitive field but any advice would really help!

Hello everyone! Hope you are doing great. I'm an internationally trained dentist with a mostly clinical Master's and PhD in Oral Med. Today, I've been working as a Research fellow in the US since 2023 and looking forward to coming back to clinic. I'm applying for perio residencies this cycle, and it would be nice to have an idea about what kind of questions they're asking during the interviews. I appreciate any advice you may have for a first-time applicant. All the best to you!

I felt like questions that I had during my interview really just boiled down to them trying to figure out my reason of why I wanted to do Perio. I have been graduated for a couple years now and took a lot of CE and place implants but actually they asked a lot about my situation to figure out if I was doing perio for the right reasons.

So apart from the big question of "Why Perio" they had also asked me
1. Why after 3-4 years why I would want to come back to do Perio
2. Asked about my previous work experience
3. (I have a decent amount of CE) - If I had all the CE that I had and place implants already why would I even want to come back to Perio?

So again they're really just trying to find out if you're a good fit for the program. If you have the right reasons of going into Perio, and if you're generally a person they can get along with in my opinion. Also as well I think as a person that has been out for a while, are you still mentorable and moldable.

Last thing, and I think almost everyone should but I think externships really does help a ton. I only externed to my first choice, and got accepted. But honestly I felt like the number of interviews I would have had would have been even more because if they can put a name to a face and they really like you I feel like it can one of the strongest boosts in applying.

I personally talked to someone from UCLA Perio they told me... it was pretty bad. Very minimal experience, though I did heard you get paid quite a bit as a resident but as an experience they wouldn't recommend it. I heard LA VA is okay. Generally I didn't even look at the other california schools because they were quite expensive for me. I only applied to schools that were low cost or free because I'm cheap.

Any low/affordable programs do you recommend? University of Rochester has a fairly good perio program, $200K for 3 yeras.

I had applied to LSU, South Carolina, all the texas schools, UAB, Nebraska, UNC, Rochester, LA-VA, Virginia, Washington was slightly expensive but the program had so much prestige had to still apply there as well.

University of Rochester is a paid program funded by GME if you went to school in the United States or Canada. Otherwise, yes, you would pay out of pocket tuition if you’re an international student…

GME Stipends:

If trained in Canada and USA:

If trained internationally:
