Judd

at my financial aid presentation, the # they gave was somewhere between $100-120k (but i didn't save the sheet, so i don't remember what it was exactly)

Suppose August rolls around and you've sent in your deposit to Case, put a few dollars down on an apartment in Cleveland and its just a few days before class. THEN, MSSM calls and they want you. What would you do?

Judd

good question. For now i'm saying that if i get in before august, i'll have a hard time deciding, but it i get in in august and I'm already settled in cleveland, i dont think i'd uproot myself.

Just talked with financial office and they said that we should get our financial award letter by april 15.

Dont know if the case students go through the same financial aid office as cclcm, but I received an email from cclcm today stating that our fin aid packages will be shipped today.

On another note...are you Case kids going to accept your fellow cclcm first years to your extra curriculars? I feel like the 32 people down the street will be very secluded. Ive been wondering how they are going to work that out...

ours probably won't be shipped today because there are a lot more of us...although, they could ship the first batch i suppose. the lady in the finaid office just told me they would start putting them together end of march/april, and would be working on them pretty much all month.

Thanks for the matchlist, Kashue. I've been looking for that for a few weeks now to no avail.

Kashue, I liked WSU and hated MCO. I just didn't feel right at MCO at all. On the other hand, WSU was really great. But it comes down to where I thought I would have the best opportunities after graduation. I think certain institutions open doors for you, and others will present nothing but an uphill battle depending on what you want to go into.

At WSU, something like 80% of the class does primary care. That's quite a hurdle if you end up wanting to do something esle. That said, I'm CONVINCED that the clinical education at Wright State would have been as good as (and quite frankly, I suspect better than) that education at Case. The irony is that Wright State may very well make me a better doctor. BUT, it won't necessarily permit me to be the the kind of doctor I want to be (I have no idea what that is yet).

Look, Buffalo is, in my opinion, a solid school. The clinical education there is probably great. When I shadowed at our County Internal Medicine clinic I met two residents who went to Buffalo. And quite frankly they seemed just as qualified (if not more qualified) as the Case, UC, UMass and OSU grads. And why shouldn't they be. All these schools offer solid clinical educations. But the reality is that some of them open more doors to more competitive fields that others do. That's just a fact.

You'll need to study the match list at Buffalo closely to decide for yourself.

To answer your question: Yes, I'd take out an extra 160k in loans to attend Case over a free ride at WSU. I think the extra opportunities are worth that much. Whether that holds for Buffalo, I'm not sure I know. It is a very difficult decision.

I know one think I WOULD do: after I got my package from Case I'd ask for more free money in light of the free ride to your state school. Let them see how much more they can throw your way.

Judd

Let me add this: If I KNEW I wanted to go into primary care, I think I would go to Wright State if they gave me the money.

If I KNEW I was going to primary care, I would be headed towards Drew/UCLA this very moment.

FYI for anyone interested in apts at Case.
Check out "The Triangle".
It is right next to the University Hospital and the SOM.
It has a covered garage which is nice in the winter.
Case charges $65 a month for parking in an assigned lot which is further away than the Triangle. so I saved the $65 plus had a covered garage. can you say SNOW.
This year rent was $669 for a studio, which included heat, AC, and water. and it is walking distance to everywhere.
The only draw back to a studio is no dishwasher,
The one and two BR have dishwashers.

Yes, I have lived in the triange. Very convenient and nice. But if you are too lazy, you might find youself eating at the McDonalds located at the base of the building more than you ought to. That's not good for anything.

Judd

Well,

The Triangle is at the base of little Italy. So, you could have both if you wanted to (of course, there is precious little "regular" fair in Little Italy - most of it is expensive save Mama Santa's, the "best" or "worst" pizza in Cleveland depending on who you ask).

The triangle is more modern than Waldorf, and I think a bit more expensive. Wladorf rooms are, from my experience, larger. Certainly the studio at Waldorf Towers is very very large. The studio at the Triangle is kinda small. There's no getting around that. But, as I said it is more modern.

Waldorf is safer. It's located on Overlook road, which, as you might have guessed, overlooks Little Italy, Case and University Circle. It is in a residential neighborhood. It has some indoor and some outdoor parking, which is fairly convenient. The Triangle is located on Euclid Avenue at the edge of University Circle. It's a 60 second walk to the hospitals. BUT, it is no stranger to crime. My wife's car was broken into (more than once) while parked in the triangle garage (could have been an inside job - no idea).

Finally, the reviews of these two buildings posted on ApartmentRatings.com suggest that Waldorf is better liked. I was happy at both buildings, but there are some less than flattering reviews of the Triangle.

For me, if I were choosing today, i would pick Waldorf Towers even though the rooms are older. It's better for riding bikes, it's safer, and its a lot closer to Coventry, which is a pretty great place to grab some chinese, cd's or whatever.

How bout that information regarding CCLCM? Looks like a 15 or so might come off the waitlist. If I get in, I'll have another look. I'm not holding my breath. Good luck to all those on the bubble (I have reason to believe that I am NOT on the bubble).

funny, my cousin just interviewed there, i think she might have gotten in?

this is really bizarre...every time i see this thread, it alternates between 7 pages and 9 pages...are a bunch of ppl phantom editing or something?
plus exmike--
don't listen to what those other ppl say...there seems to be an sdn bias against case simply because it's in cleveland. remember how all those schools bragged about their organ/systems based approach? that was developed at case...not to mention the fact that several of the ppl responsible for developing the world famous u of rochester double helix curriculum are now at case.

hey guys,

maybe this belongs on the financial aid board, but----

does anybody know what's up with the NeedAccess.org application and what the implications are for the actual award that comes from it? And also, say FAFSA decides your efc is more than you actually could afford (e.g. you have a job now, but wont, obviously, next year. how are you going to come up with the cash that's computed in the unmet need?)---can you just borrow the money even though they say you should have it somewhere else ? For examle, are you required to drain all your savings the first year of med school, or can you keep that $ where it is and just rake up some more debt?

Any insight at all would be much appreciated.

hobs

bump.
Same question here. I should probably look in the finaid forum.
Stupid job. my efc was 20something k. And I ain't got it.

I think it's assumed that you borrow the "parental contribution" figure, as well as the EFC.

SoulFlare, definately convince her to go! Case dental school is re-organizing/improving their program in various areas. I am going there because I like the direction that the dental school is going. You can check these links to find out more:

http://www.cwru.edu/pubaff/univcomm/dent-sim.htm

http://www.cwru.edu/pubaff/univcomm/2003/12-03/dentname.htm

http://www.cwru.edu/pubaff/univcomm/2003/12-03/patientcare.htm

They have also indicated in their dental school's publication that one perk of being a Case dental alumni is that 'all children and siblings of dental alums - will be invited to interview regardless of other evaluating factors' (I don't know if other schools have it policy as well but it is good that they try to get Case students recognized there.)

I also like where Case is situated, located adjacent to a picturesque lagoon....can't wait to get there!

Spit my pop out all over my keyboard when I read this. Just like the movies.

Judd

This is what that reminded me of... My how my mind wonders about.

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale, a tale of a fateful trip, That started from this tropic port, aboard this tiny ship. The mate was a mighty sailin' man, the Skipper brave and sure. Five passengers set sail that day for a three hour tour. A three hour tour.

The weather started getting rough, the tiny ship was tossed. If not for the courage of the fearless crew, the Minnow would be lost. The Minnow would be lost. The ship set ground on the shore of this uncharted desert isle,
with Gilligan, the Skipper too, the Millionaire
and his wife, the movie star, the Professor
and Mary Ann, here on Gilligan's Isle.

Do you guys remember if Case had a note-taking service?

I guess when I went for the interview in December all the junk were covered either by a sheet of ice, or snow!

Is it really this bad??? Maybe I've just walked around there for 30 min. and thought a lagoon is cool. Maybe I will have the same feeling when I get use to looking at it.😀

No no, I'm kidding you (well, I really did spit all over the keyboard); it's not that bad. The lagoon is kinda filthy and not that safe. However the museums are nice and it all looks great in the spring and summer. Actually the circle is quite nice.

I'm just being funny.

i believe that ALL of the notes for coursework is online. I sat in on a class while i was there, and most people were following along on their laptops with notes that had been posted on the web, by the professor.

Just out of curiosity. is everyone here intending on getting loans/financial aid to finance the $36,000 + living expenses to attend Case Western? Is it crazy to take on 200k + in loans?

$37,200 next year...
I'm very nervous about the debt, but then again I will be in huge debt no matter where I go--state schools included. I'm going to pay for school with loans and hopefully grants. I plan to specialize however, and perhaps the hospital where I end up will assume my debt as a "signing bonus." The way I see it, this is the most important investment I will ever make. People buy houses for $200,000 + every day, and the return is a fraction of what a medical school education offers--so I don't feel badly about spending that in order to go to case.

ps...you're from texas? long way from cleveland. what made you decide to apply here?

I saw a lot of Freecell and Solitaire being played...

Just got waitlisted. I'm not going to keep my waitlist spot, because I got into UMass, and that's good enough for me. Best of luck to all of you, Case seemed like a great school!

Judd, or anyone else in the know...when is orientation?

I actually do not know. I lost all my interview materials (don't ask), and we have received precious little from Case about anything. I guess we will get more with the financial aid packages.

Why did you withdraw your app from OSU? Did we already have this conversation?

The only thing I have is on the acceptance agreement receipt. It said school started in Aug and "we will be sending you more information including the exact starting date later in the year in one of our mailings."

Basically, OSU sent me an "ultimatum." I was on the "hold/alternate pool" list, and they emailed asking me to fill out a form. The form was a "yes I want to remain on the hold list" or "no. withdrawal my application" type deal. I figured that 1. I probably wouldn't hear from them before May 15th, at which time I would have to withdrawal anyway or 2. I would hear from them and I would withdrawal by May 15th because I really don't want to go there. I figured it would be easier to withdrawal now and not have to worry about 11th hour catastrophes (Case: "you are holding an acceptance from another school...therefor we withdrawal ours!" OSU: "we never received your withdrawal forms...must have been lost in the mail...sorry buddy. try again next year.")

I think that class starts first week of August. They did last year.

how big a deal is this? worth it for family to make the trip? even if they just attended graduation two and a half months earlier?

I thought that Case's white coat was great. They had a good guest speaker and the formality was very good. I know those who went through it really liked it. Also, the food was pretty decent.

I haven't gotten my finaid package, although I think we should begin receiving them this month

Wondering if the dental guys like me will see you in orientation? We have our orientations in July 27-30 and White coat ceremony sometime during this period.
