Official: Johns Hopkins Class of 2007 Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yo people, I got some questions.

Are many of you bringing a car? I am gonna bring one (I'm buying it tomorrow!!! woooohoooo!), and I guess the best option is to get a parking spot in the garage??? Does anyone know of any other options.

About Reed...I remember taking a tour of the suites, and I remember something of a kitchen kinda thing in there. Does it have an actual stove and stuff like that. I can't for the life of me remember what was in the kitchen, and everytime I remember to think about this stuff the housing office is usually closed, so I can't call em. And oh yeah, I'm living in 5A3...or at least I think that's what was scribbled on my paperwork.

When are you all planning on heading down to Balitmore. I think the papers said something about stuff beginning on the 26th. I may be mistaken though cause I didn't look at it that closely yet.

And to Rapid, since I know he wanted to know something about all of us... I am kind of off-the-wall at times, random, and I find humor in just about everything. I probably smile too much too... I think I remember someone describing me once by saying nothing but: "he smiles a lot" 😛 Ehh, let me see...I am really into sports. Are there any rowers or raquetball players out there (I just saw that the gym in Reed has raquetball court(s))? Or can I find a running buddy? What else, hmmm. I love things that scare me, and I really really like pierogies. And that's about it for now cause I don't want to reveal all. I'll wait for the camping trip for that. 😉 I would have written this stuff before but I was scared for my life at the computer I used on vacation.

Hope everyone is doing well.

Oh no! I'm DEFINITELY going to have to switch rooms now!

Just kidding... I think I'm going to not switch out and hope that the helicopters won't keep me awake at nights or at least develop heavy sleeping skills.

The homework packet was a little unexpected, but at least it lets us know what to expect.

The camping trip sounds fun... I don't know about this whole ice breaker stuff.. never was a fan of them.. I guess its because i'm embarassed of my cheesiness.

Chooch: I'm definitely bringing a car, at least then I'll get to see the city and DC. I'm just trying to figure out if its cheaper to buy one here and send it over or to get one over there.

Hmm ... will have to investigate possibility of HW prank. Am too lazy to look up letter right now and see if from actual faculty member ...

Sapphire, welcome--haven't seen you around before (I bet this has something to do with your being in Europe). Where did you go/what were you doing? 🙂

Chooch--I play racquetball badly, and I, too, will be seeking a running buddy ... As I recall from my host's kitchen, they had a fridge and a small oven/range. I don't think they could be considered efficiencies without some sort of cooking appliance.

We're moving up in July. Planning for the 24th right now, but possibly earlier if the mortgage company can get our financing done soon. Did anyone meet the cop in our class from Chicago? She's very cool and moving around the same time. Is anyone else going to get there early? We should try to have a get-together.

Sapphire - hey! I was thinking about whether the homework was a prank or not, too. People have said it is in the past, but it's interesting because it does have the first year coordinator's signature, and the packet doesn't seem overwhelming enough to be a prank - you know what I mean? I was imagining this giant packet full of problems, but this packet is mostly review. Though it DOES tell us to read 170 pp...

I am definitely bringing a car. I'm not buying a new one, but I'll be driving my car across country, loaded down with my stuff. I'm going to pay for parking at Reed. My hosts at revisit actually said that they were charged for parking for the first couple months, and then the school just stopped charging them for some reason, so they had free parking at the hospital! Hopefully that happens again this year. 😀

I wasn't planning on heading to Baltimore much sooner than the start of orientation, on that Thursday. Is anyone doing that pre-orientation thing that starts on Tuesday?

I think I'm going to the pre-orientation thing. I am already pretty close to Baltimore, and I'm not doing a damn thing all summer...so I really don't have a reason not to. 🙂 I am jealous of you though Rapid, I've wanted to drive across the country for a long time, never really got around to doing it though. Oh well, maybe next year.

No, I don't think it would screw up your chances at all. The writing score isn't very important in itself anyway. In fact, I have heard admissions officers talk about the writing score and how worthless they think it is. I would say in most cases, if the writing score is on the low side, and the adcom is worried about it, they would just pull out your personal statement and essays to check em out to make sure. So make sure they are some sweet pieces of writing. And also, I would say that your verbal score on the MCAT would help counteract some bad feelings about the writing score....and seeing that you have a 37, I think you probably have a perrrrfectly fine verbal score.

All in all, don't worry about, and apply where you wanna be. Don't count any schools out by trying to predict where you will get in, especially with your numbers, cause ya just never know.

The overall point: the writing section is dumb and everyone knows it. 😛

hey guys!

vw- ...i was in europe for about 3 weeks and toured france, italy, and spain..was amazing...🙂 yea, i guess im pretty new to the hopkins threads...chooch and I go way back though..😉 we both interviewed at hopkins on the same day..🙂

anyways, yea so im living in 9-B-2 in reed..are any of my suitemates writing on this forum???🙂

im still debating whether i should bring up a car or not..im gonna wanna go to nyc quite often to visit friends, so im wondering if thats enough of a reason to bring up a car...parking in reed is what, like 100 a month or so?

iamhere: I didn't do too hot on my writing section, I got the average, but I'm a decent writer and that showed on my personal statement. I don't think Hopkins or any other school is going to go "Well.. he/she was very impressive in the interview and his/her extracurriculars are stellar, but.. that writing score... I don't know... I think we might have to let this one go..." I think most schools are looking for a good overall candidate and someone who fits in with what they are looking for and it's that second part that makes medical school admissions seem very random at times. Don't worry too much about scores and try to apply to schools that you think you'd fit well at.

iamhere, I got an N and I actually had very similar numbers to yours. I was a little worried about this last year too, as I started out really wanting to go to Hopkins and not sure if the writing score would significantly hurt my chances. But trust me, you have NOTHING to worry about - at all of my interviews, even at top 10s, I was never once asked about it.

Best of luck - if you don't end up getting into your first choice, it will not be because of your writing score. 😉

Sapphire - I'll be across the hall. Be sure to come say hi! 🙂

Hmm...I was just thinking that the 12th floor is rather a long way up, especially if the ghetto elevators in Reed Hall just happen to stop working....This is not good....

Hey Chooch--I'm looking for a racquetball buddy. We should play. And I interviewed at Hopkins a few weeks before you I think.

Now we need a bunch of people to have weekly Ultimate Frisbee games, and I will be a happy camper.

Looking forward to meeting all of you at the orientation weekend.

Has anybody starting filling out the registration packet yet? One of the things it tells us to submit is an ID Request form but I swear there isn't one in there. Anybody know what they're talking about?

Rapid- Isn't that a great packet . . . tons of fun. I took it to work and filled it out over the course of a week or two when I got bored.
The ID request form is a little card. It's probably a 4 by 6 card. Hope you find it.

Is anyone doing that pre-orientation orientation Baltimore community thing?

Thanks, Phaedrus - I found it. It was still stuck in the envelope - good thing I didn't throw it away!

I don't think I'm going to end up doing that pre-orientation thing. I probably won't be able to leave here until the 24th of August and I will need all that time in order to make it to Baltimore by the 28th. But I would be interested in whether or not others are planning on doing it.

Ahh, just got back from a nice little vacation at the beach. You gotta love the ghetto Jersey shore. 😎

Yeah, about all these registration materials... Ehh, I don't know where to start. I am working myself up to actually going through it all. Blehhh.

And Phaedrus, it's on for racquetball. 🙂 I love it...haven't really played in awhile because none of my friends in college played too much, but I'm ready to get back into it.

Would anyone like to run the Baltimore marathon this fall (Oct. 28)? I was planning on doing Philly in November, but Baltimore sounds cool.

Bedtime... 😛

I'm probably going to do the pre-orientation thing. Will already be there anyway ...

Chooch, I would love to run a marathon, but doing it this year is out of the question for me. I don't even know where to begin on training for one ... I will cheer for anyone in our class who does run it, though. 😀

Sapphire, your trip sounds great. I did some traveling in those areas a few years ago and would love to go back.

Yo VW, we can still run though. We need to find some cool routes, cause I'm prolly gonna be doing a lot of running and I need to find out where to go. But yeah, come out and root for us (I'm sure I'll rope someone else into running it....hopefully). I will have to wear some kind of crazy body graffiti during the race so you can pick me out easily. 😛

What up bluejays (or whatever our mascot is),

Haven't been on SDN since I was going nuts applying exactly a year ago. This is Bruce, proud member of JHU class of 2007!!!

I met a bunch of you at revisit; I was one of the prospectives who go into one of the improv acts at the first year show🙄 I was the especially lame one...

Don't got much time right now; finishing up THIS WEEK 🙂clap: ) at NIH. Gotta get a manuscript done before I go though. Then it's chill time on my own before chill time begins with you guys... Lookin' fo'ward to it y'all! I'll write more soon once I'm de-NIH'd...

Anyone wanna get some kinda b-ball thing started in the fall???...

BTW, I'm thinkin of starting a rap group of Hopkins students... "Hip-Hopkins". Any suggestions???

Hee hee ... you were fine. I was the one sinking in my seat when one of the first years started yelling, "There's a girl here who DOES improv!" During the tour and liver rounds, I had met two of the JHU improv players, and thinking it was harmless, discussed my own improv days ... barely squeaked out of THAT one ...

Hi folks,
Congrats on getting into Hopkins Med. I'm applying this year (for 2004 admittance) to a bunch of schools, but I've been at Hopkins (undergrad and grad ) for the past 5 years, so I know a lot about Hopkins and Baltimore. Feel free to ask about neighborhoods, good restarants/bars, how to deal with Hopkins stuff in general, etc. Congrats again.

Bruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuce! (Sorry, I couldn't resist - won't happen again 😉 ) Hey, how's it going? I met you. We had the same hosts at Revisit. 🙂

 Me too!!! It just so happened that my hosts were basically in CHARGE of that skit. They weren't just looking for me, they were screaming my name! "Where's Matt?! Get Matt down here!!" I don't know HOW I got out of that one!!!

Did someone say Racquetball?!? Oh well I won't be as cool as y'all in the med program I'll just be a lowly grad student at the hospital...

XCanadian - sweet! What are you going to be studying/researching?

Greenie - since you are offering... I hate to study at home. Actually I hate to study at all but I tend to be able to focus better at bookstore and/or coffee shop type places. Can you recommend a couple near the hospital, like in Fells Point or Canton? I know about the Barnes and Noble at the Harbor but are there others? Thanks!

Yeah, there are a lot of coffee shop-type places in and around Fells Point. Cooper's is popular for pub-like dinners, but they usually don't mind if you hang around to study. There is Annie's book shop that has small tables, but there is this really weird woman who works there that you may not want to deal with. Many other places offer a good environment to study in, but you'll have to watch out b/c the nightlife is pretty big down there and things might get too loud.

I live in Charles Village and there are a handful of coffee shops where students study. MSE library has its own place that is pretty busy and not too quiet.

Even at JHMI the School of Nursing has a lounge that lots of students go to for coffee and talking.

Hope that helps.

Whew, that WAS close! About the only thing I had going for me at the time was the fact that they apparently didn't remember my name.

Immunology. I'm gonna try and become smarter than you JHUmed people at something, although maybe I should try something like underwater basket weaving. I'm sure none of you have tried it.

I'll be the one trailing behind y'all with green eyes of envy. But congrats to y'all who made it in. I dont' know any of you but I'm happy for ya.

Hi Kids!

Two things from a now-full-of-experience-second-year 🙂

GO TO THE ORIENTATION WEEKEND!!!!! It is the best and most fun way to meet and hang out with your classmates for a weekend - you get to hang out with some of the more charming second years, too 😉

The problem set is, in fact, real. It took me until an October meeting with Dr. Berg himself for me to believe that, but he confirmed that it isn't a prank. I heard that one year the upperclassmen made the first years turn in their answers on the first day and THAT was a prank, but the Molecules and Cells course directors really do send out the problem set. That said, don't stress over it at all. You will have to do some problems like that in the first few weeks, but they never ask for your answers 🙂

Y'all sound like loads of fun, can't wait to welcome you here in August!

  Nice - The age-old mystery is finally solved! Thanks, Dawn. 🙂 Maybe I should actually do those, just to make sure I'm where I need to be. And everyone raves about the orientation weekend, so I'll definitely be there.

Greenie - thanks a lot for the recommendations. I will be sure to check those out. 🙂 Any chance of seeing you at Hopkins Med next year or are you Baltimored out?

XCanadian-

That's right, Racquetball!!!

Who else is in?

Aww, that would be so sweet if we could get a group of people together to play racquetball! Looks like we're already on our way. 😀

Rapid Decomposition:
Well, I'm applying to HopkinsMed but after two degrees from Johnny Hop it may be time to ship out of Baltimore!!!

I hope all of you enjoy Baltimore. It's a great city if you get out there and explore. It definitely grows on you! Good luck.

Whoo-hoo! Do I hear a league forming?

Greetings ALL

I havent written anything on this thread before, matter of fact I havent visited SDN in a while.
Anyways I honestly dont remember my interview date, but I was there in revisit, im also gonna be staying in Reed i think my room assignment contract thingy said something about 5a-something ('sup Chooch), but my smart As$ signed and returned both copies without making a copy for myself ( I am sooo hopkins material).

Anyways, I heard alot of the out-of-towners are interested in visiting DC. All the people that are getting to Baltimore early, If you wanna do any DC tour kinda getogether, we can definitely organize something.let me know, I know about every hole in every wall in DC.

I havent even looked at the problem set yet, you guys will probably see me trying to figure them out in the camp or Sept 1st.

I really cant wait for school to start, Im very excited about the hopkins experience, hope to see yall in the weekend retreat!!

Bump!

What's up Amiroz! I'm not sure if I met you at Revisit or not but welcome all the same.

DC sounds awesome. I won't be in Baltimore much before orientation, but if you guys end up going after school starts I'd be game.

So!! About a month and a half left of summer - anyone getting nervous?

thanx RD

Yeah we can definitely do sthg after school starts. I'll be coming down to DC every month or so to check on the fam so Im definitely game.

Nervous? I dont know I'm just bored of being bored you know what I mean? I planned this to be a year off and a relaxed summer but it turned out to be a boring year and an unbearably boring summer.

Does anyone know if it will do us any good to buy the book mentioned in the curriculum letter (Biochemistry)? I dont think I will particularly need it to figure out the the review piece, but If it is the recommended text in the first block then its worth the $$

I cant remember the list of books they recommended in the orientation packet, but I can tell you that last year the recommended text for the biochemistry block is "Biochemistry" by Jeremy Berg, (one of our very own faculty who will be doing some of the lectures), Tymoczko, and Stryer. We used the 5th edition last year so I'm assuming everything will be the same for you guys this year.

If you guys want, I can give you guys a detailed list of all recommended books we used last year for the first year courses.

Keep in mind that this list IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE every year, so let the buyer beware.

Congratulations to you all, and I'll be meeting some of you when school starts up. 😀

I was wondering that. I've had so many people tell me not to buy the required books, though, as usually your notes are all you need ... Berg is an awfully familiar name--I'm wondering if my undergrad biochem book is an older edition of the same thing. I would check, but alas, I packed my text books last week ...

Any 2nd years out there? Do we buy the book?

Oh, and I would totally be up for a DC trip.

Thats a hard question to answer. From a strictly utilitarian perspective, its only necessary to buy a few of the books (especially in anatomy).

For biochem, you could go either way. I like to buy at least one recommended text for each course section so I can get an in-depth source to clear up confusion from time to time. I also plan to keep the books as references for later use.

Buying the textbooks is not 100% necessary to pass the courses--that much is for sure. The detailed notes they give you in class are enough to pass.

Thanx Gradient

The book they recommended on the review package was Berg's 5th edition so I guess it will be benficial to buy it and start on it now (im officialy One Benjamin Less rich). I think I will need it since biochem wasnt exactly my cup of tea when I took it in undergrad about a hundred years ago.

Im a lil nervous about what we'll be expected to know when classes start, Naturally none will start from scratch but did you guys feel the speed of the courses was overwhelmingly based on the fact that wer'e expected to already know the stuff or be very familiar with it. Was there any "beyond ordinary" whinning coming from the non-trads?

just nervous🙁

Miroz

Yo Miroz-

I wouldn't worry too much about the pace. The first year is a lot slower than the second and I'm pretty sure they start from the beginning in almost everything. They do this for the those that have been out of school for a while, and for stupid philosophy majors like myself. When the second year starts, everyone is pretty much on an equal footing. Plus, there are five different discussion groups that you can go to based upon your current knowledge level in whatever we are studying at the moment.

So don't be nervous. (Easy for me to say, but in actuality I am freaking out 😱 😀-- philosophy . . . what in the crap was I thinking?!)

But some people that are actually students might like to opine as well, because they would know better than me.

VW - I think some of the older editions of the book list Stryer as the primary author. I have the 4th edition (an ugly red book) which has five out of the six chapters the letter told us to read. And since I just took Biochem last semester I think I'm going to skip the pre-reading. 😀 I will do the biophysics problems one of these days though, and I gotta refresh my memory on amino acid structures too.

Amiroz - I agree with Phaedrus. I don't think the pace is going to be too difficult for anyone to handle. In fact my hosts at Revisit said it starts out kind of easy, just to make sure that non-trads and others like me who majored in something totally unuseful (in medical school, anyway) are more or less on the same page with the hardcore scientists of the class.

Howdy everyone....??am writing to you all from Taiwan. It's kinda strange using the chinese version of internet explorer, but I just wanted to pop in and see what's up. Anyways, haven't even looked at the review packet cause I am doing too much sightseeing and shopping. I am going out again soon, so see you guys later...

Anyone freaking out about the promissory note? My FA paperwork arrived yesterday ...

hey guys and gals,

stryer 4th edition was completely fine for me last year. i don't even think i cracked it open at all... don't go and start buying random books just yet, wait 'till you can see them first-hand (in the bookstore), and see if they suit you... then buy them second-hand from the second years!

i'm one of those people who bought a total of 3 or 4 books last year (anatomy stuff and maybe random small review books)... i think the notes they give out are FANTASTIC, and if i didn't understand something, i asked a friend to explain it...

they only test you on the material they present in lecture, if you study the notes well, you will do very well in class...

take care y'all, don't worry about a thing. they expect you not to know anything in the beginning, and they build everything from scratch...!

have a good day,
swaroop

Hey Swaroop

That was indeed a very comforting post. Thanx

Question for the 2nd years.

When touring the campus and stuff, I noticed ATM machines somewhere in the hospital building. RIght now Im trying to open an account in a bank that has a branch close to the campus and if possible ATM machines on campus. Can you guys recommend me a bank? I think it was bank of America whose machine i saw, Im not sure. Howabout a bank with a nearby branch?

I know I could have just called the campus main line and asked or gone online or 411-ed the investigation but with you helpful ppl around, I have an excuse to be lazy 🙂

Thanx
Miroz

hey miroz!

so you're right-- there's a bank of america ATM w/in the hospital, and a branch just across the street (next to the CVS and med bookstore). it is really convenient!

okay, i may not check sdn for a while, but if any of y'all have any questions, email me at [email protected]

take care,

Hopkins is kind of strange in this respect--we dont have the white coat ceremony until after the first year.
