Official Johns Hopkins Med Class of 2006 thread..

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Poor Sonic! I'm sorry you're sick, that is really no fun. Hope you're better soon. Lolly, I'm moving into an apartment on N. Charles Street, and my lease starts this Friday...no Reed Hall for me, but I'm certain that I'll be there hanging out often. Justin, did you find an apartment yet? The first 6 chapters in Stryer are not a problem, if you've taken Biochem it's really just a review. (I say this in a hopeful tone, since I am still on page 11, and now Stryer is packed in a box that says "BOOKS - HEAVY!!")

I soon will probably have a posting hiatus, unless I walk down to the Enoch Pratt Free Library to get online for a week or so.

Sonic, I still don't know your real name, so I'll just knock on the door of apartment 4A sometime early next week with a bowl of chicken soup and say "Are you Sonic?" Then we can continue the party planning from where it left off before your illness. Have any of you met Dean Herlong yet? I hear he's just fabulous, it's his office that you've been talking to about the party, right Sonic?

I wanted to get my phone number before I moved, but blasted Verizon is taking its sweet old time delivering the phone. I ordered my phone and my biochem book on the same day, and that books been here over a week! I'm sure I'll be able to find those of you already in Baltimore once I get there.

-Dawn

Hi all

ok, im starting to get really excited!! glad to hear though Dawn (9/16) that i still have another week. havent looked at a calendar for a little while.

im in Reed in suite 9B-4. Jessica is also in my suite so you can visit both of us at once!! (Paulette and April, the two other suitemates, havent been posting have they??)

feel better sonic!

Liana

p.s. welcome justin! good luck with the biochem book. having never taken biochem, im slowly making my way through the book and it doesnt seem too bad so far. you should be able to get through it pretty easily.

Thanks everyone...
... I think I'm getting better, although I'm seeing a doctor at Hopkins tomorrow. The professor whose lab I'm doing my first rotation in, Anirvan Ghosh, showed up at my door this afternoon carrying two big shopping bags containing milk, juice, fruit, and soup -- stuff I've needed, since I haven't been able to cook for myself while I've been sick.... I was so touched by his kindness. Back in my undergrad school, no professor would show up with that kind of thoughtfulness... It really blew me away!

...Liana - I know one of your other suite-mates, April. I think she must be posting here as well because totally out of the blue she sent me an email asking me about Baltimore. She said she was living in Reed. I assumed she got my contact info from the board... or maybe not. Also, how did you figure out the names of everyone else? In 4A, two of us are first years, and two are second years. I've met both the second-years and they're both cool guys. I haven't met the other first year. I wonder how you can find that info out. Did you call the Reed Hall office?

Well, after a long, long time away from sdn and a long summer vacation away from a computer...I have returned. Hopefully, at least some of the old, old school sdners will remember me.

When I logged in today after traveling for the last 3 months, I couldn't believe the changes - the new format, but I trully have felt welcomed back by this tread and can't wait to join you all in a week in and a half. Wow I can't believe it is less than two weeks before I start school again.

And speaking of moving in nylee I am going to be one of your roommates in 10D - 10D2 to be exact. I have already met another one of our roommates and glad that I will be living with another sdner. We will definitely have to talk soon.

I am glad to see all of the other familiar names - even if some of them have changed a few times since I was here last.

I am definitely down with the pool party and I think that labor day would be a great time to have it. We can hang onto summer for at least one more day.

Well, for now that is enough of the nicities - now down to business. Since you all seem to be filled with so much information, I had a few logistical questions that I need answers to as I am getting ready.
1. I know that the rabbit ears question about the tv reception was asked before, but I don't think that there was a clear answer. So does anyone know if you can get ok tv reception with a good antenna in reed hall?
2. Are the room in reed hall equipped with ethernet access?
3. How many phone lines are there in a reed suite?
4. I am going to buy a new PDA in the next week, does anyone know if Hopkins recommends a certain operating system, amt of memory, etc. Are they using any of this technology on the floor?

Thanks. As usual, even after a long time away, I feel right a home here!

Welcome back, DSMD!!

I'll try answering some of your questions because I've been in Reed Hall since mid June and I've been hanging out with some of the second years....

1. I know that the rabbit ears question about the tv reception was asked before, but I don't think that there was a clear answer. So does anyone know if you can get ok tv reception with a good antenna in reed hall?

You can get reception of several channels making a nice rabbit-ears antenna using cooking aluminum foil. My roommate's had done that last year and their TV is still in my suite for anyone who wants to get an idea... but I don't know if any of those channels are really worth it.

If not, the West wing of Reed hall (first floor) has a common lounge area equipped with a big TV and VCR. Even movies are available to be borrowed from the Reed hall office or security post. I haven't borrowed them myself, so I really don't know the details.

I was at the first year lecture hall area yesterday and I saw that there's a medical student lounge. This is separate from the doctors and med student lounge (which comes with a nice fancy bigscreen TV and VCR and cable etc), but this one is a pretty big tv set with a vcr. So if you're really in the mood to watch something i guess you could always come to the lounge and watch it. It's in Woods Basic Science building (WBSB).

2. Are the room in reed hall equipped with ethernet access?

Yeah... all the rooms come with ethernet access, and for some peculiar reason most of the file swapping software don't seem to work properly here, on the hopkins network -- especially kazaa, to which I've been addicted in the past couple of months. Some other gnutella clients work OK. the ethernet access is great, very fast, and best of all --- its free. (as an undergrad i had to pay extra for ethernet access)

3. How many phone lines are there in a reed suite?

Each suite has four rooms -- four phone lines. Some come with the phone jack, others do not. Either way, when you come in, you'll see that there's already a really old, centrex phone installed. With this you can make calls anywhere throughout Hopkins but not outside. If you want local calls you must pay $15 per month to get local access.... if you want long distance you have to contact Verizon and get them to hook it up (more expenses). frankly, i say just get a cell phone. It's cheaper and more convenient.

4. I am going to buy a new PDA in the next week, does anyone know if Hopkins recommends a certain operating system, amt of memory, etc. Are they using any of this technology on the floor?

Different med students are into different varieties and I don't think we will even need a palm pilot until towards the end of our second year. Even then, it makes life easier, but sure as hell is not an absolute necessity. Pretty much all the med students who have palm pilots (I've seen carry the Palm OS operating system).. I'm not sure what the most recent version is... 4.01?

Other than that, you can go with Handspring Visor, Palm, or Sony Clie...they seem to be the more popular models. I have a Handspring Visor. It's good and hasnt' failed me... I've used it for about 2 years now.

Extra Advice
When you move into Reed, give your room a good inspection. The reed hall staff is not going to penalize you when you leave for small problems in the room... Ann Snead is very very nice. She never even bothers people about the rent (which reminds me, I have to pay her mine!!).. and she told me that the security deposit has always been refunded to students -- the only exceptions are when the suite was left like a pig-sty... total mess.

the reason you should check it when you move in, is to make sure that if anything needs fixing. you should go down to security, fill out a fix-it request form and within a day or two they will get it done. Also, don't be too surprised if your rooms are dirty when you move in... at least mine was. We had to clean it ourselves. If its not too much pain, its not a big deal to clean your own suite.

Thanks Sonic!

Wow - what a quick and extensive response! My family lives in DC (where I am living right now and keeping all of my things), so I think that I may leave some things at home - like TV....until I see what the deal is...then I can always run home and get them.

As for the PDA, I now have the original palm, which was handed down to me two years ago by my father. I use it all the time and pretty much keep my life in there, but it is really bulky, slow and hard to read. So, I am going to spoil myself and buy a new one.

All the other advice it great too...I think that I am going to come up on the 24th and bring some things and check things out. My parents are having this brunch for me on the 25th, so I will come back home and then come with the rest on my things on Monday.

Thanks again!

DSMB, Welcome back!!!

Probably my last post on here all, I'll see you all in person very soon. It's been a blast!

Back to packing...

WHOA!!! A ROOMMATE?? Hey DesperatelySeeking! I'm so glad I found a roommate on SDN!! YAY! i can't wait to meet you! When are you moving in, DSMD? I'm hoping I can move in my stuff little by little starting on the 22nd...but i'm not too sure.

Ninesixteen's gone...🙁
But not for long!

Wait a minute.....NO KAZAA???? I can't LIVE without KAZAA!!! What to do? What to do? 😱

Also, I got a Compaq ipaq last winter for Christmas (the windows-operated PDA) Will this be a problem if everyone else is on the Palm OS system? I don't think I can swap files with anyone. 🙁 What do you think, Sonic?

Hello all!

I hope everyone has been enjoying their last few weeks of freedom! I think I am still in denial about how busy our lives will become because I continue to think about all the other things I want to do while a med student (except the studying part!!). I love playing tennis. While I was in Florida I played several times a week and since I've been home in California I have barely played at all. Do any of you play tennis? I would love to start playing regularly, perhaps in an IM league or something. Does anyone play in the winter on the East Coast, or is it hard to find dry courts? Anyway, anyone interested in playing PLEASE speak up--I'm going through withdrawals!!

Hi all

nice to meet all of the "new" people. to answer your question sonic, the names of our suitemates were on one of the many forms that hopkins sent to us. they gave us the names, hopkins gave us the list of everyone's address, and Paulette sent letters to everyone in the suite with her email address.... we've been talking over email ever since and the rest is, well, history... 🙂

i probably wouldnt be a great tennis partner Liv2B--i havent played since 9th grade. where in FL were you? thats my home state!

thanks for all of the move-in advice sonic. i really appreciate it.... glad to hear that the reed hall staff is friendly!

Liana

Hi Liana,

I was living in Boca Raton--don't worry, I wasn't renting there, but living in a friend's guest house!! I worked at Pinecrest Rehab Hospital in Delray Beach. I am sure going to miss the warm winters!! Where are you from?

Olivia

hey liv2b!
I can say that I KNOW how to play tennis...but unfortunately, I suck. I don't know of any indoor courts, though...I think there are some outdoor ones right by Reed Hall, but I would be too self-conscious to play there 😛

HI all

there are outdoor tennis courts right next to Reed (which is right next to the gym). I parked my car by the tennis courts last year abd I would always see people playing on them during the warmer months--there should be no shortage of tennis partners for you Olivia!!

Also, it sounds like you had a great setup in Boca. Im actually from Coral Springs, about 30 minutes SW of where you were. My mom works in Boca--and there is great shopping at Town Center--so im up there a lot. The winters are wonderful down here, though!! And, actually, its cooler down here this summer than many places up north 🙂

Countdown: 7 days till I go to Baltimore!! Wow!!
Liana

Hi all!

Well, I offcially packed two suitcases. Included in one of them are the problem sets (not done) and biochem book (still on page 11)! Haha! I hope that doepug wasn't kidding about this stuff being a hazing ritual, bcuz otherwise I will be starting off at the bottom of the class. Ah well. I'll need something to pass the time in between all of our scheduled activities before classes get underway, right? 😉

I can't wait!

As for tennis.... I don't think I could be of much help besides fetching balls Olivia. I (tried) to play in HS, but I only ever made the alternate team. So when half of the girls were sick, I actually got to play once! I am not exactly the most gifted athlete, but I do like to *attempt* to play. With some practice, I might be decent... but I'll have to do some solo ball hitting before I take on the likes of you tennis pros 😛

-Jessica

Any instrument players out there? I heard there's a piano in the basement of Reed Hall! I know my roommate Tara plays the horn, but are any of you guys planning on continuing your musical hobbies???

Hello!

Hey, I'm up to playing tennis at any level--and believe me I'm no pro, I just enjoy playing! As for instruments, Nylee, I can say that I KNOW how to play the flute and piano, but I'm really not any good... I'm always up to giving things a shot though! My grandpa made violins as a hobby, and I've always wanted to learn to play the one we inherited--so if anyone wants to teach me...!!

Hey Nylee, I met your roomate, Tara, at the interview for JHU (I remember she played the Horn, so it must be the same person). Say hi to her for me if she's around yet (my name's Olivia).

Hey Olivia! I'll be sure to mention your name the next time I write Tara. She lives in Maryland, so moving won't be a big deal for her either. Did you say you're moving into an apartment? Where is your apartment?

and...I'll be happy to play tennis with you if you don't mind looking for tennis balls more than hitting them! You're from UCSD? There's someone else from UCSD on our roster named James Kang...do you happen to know him?

oh yeah...and I have a violin too...I took up violin in 6th grade so I don't play well, but I used to teach beginners while I was in college, so I'll definitely show you a few techniques when you have the time!

The piano in the basement is always locked, and needs to get unlocked during office hours of the student affairs office, I think...

I have a Yamaha PSR1000 electronic keyboard in my room, for those of you who feel like playing... I played the keyboard about five years ago for a band, .... but I've now completely lost my touch. I'm trying to revive it again.

Nylee, I don't think I know James Kang. I graduated in '99 and he just graduated this year--but you never know, I might recognize him!

I will be living in an apartment in Mount Washington. I know it is a bit far from school, but I remember the area when I visited for the interview, and felt safe renting an apartment there through a realtor without seeing it myself. I am really looking forward to seeing it!! I'm sure I'll be over at Reed Hall a fair amount though, because it seems like that is where most first years are living!!

Hola, amigos.

so this is me being unfashionably late, as usual. But while most of us are still waiting in that anticipitory state of pre-Hopkins limbo, I'll add another voice to our growing 2006 collective. My name's Delicious B, though I doubt I'm very delicious in any edible sense of the word, and I'll be joining you all come late August. I, too, will be dorming it at Reed (Suite 901A, I think), and I'd love to run into anyone who'll be settling down nearby. It sounds as though a number of us will be packed into the 9th and 10th floor suites, which I think is fantastic considering all of the junk food we can network around through times of need. And for food junkies such as myself, there are unfortunately many, many, manymanymany times of need. In short, snacking at odd intervals provides greater purpose to my existence, and anyone who feels similarly (or oppositely for that matter) will be welcome in the House of Shamefully Good Times that is to be suite 901. Just look for the bearded guy with glasses whose hair is a little too curly for its own good, and you'll most likely find me (or some evil clone trying to pass off as me. . . . destroy him immediately. . .)

wow, that's definitely a mouthful of ridiculousness from a really tired guy. Sorry, everyone. I'd better go sleep this wired state of mind off.

take care, and I'll talk to you all soon,
~DB

Hey DB! Welcome to our thread! Our population is growing! I think Hopkins may be the largest group on SDN!

Hmm...DB, it looks like you're living right below me and DSMD! Sounds awesome! You'll probably be Jessica and Liana's neighbors! Why don't you give us a hint about who you are...where are you from?

Does anyone have a guitar? I don't have one but it's such a great stress-reliever to strum some tunes!

Hi, Nylee. Thanks for responding. To answer your question, I'm the Colby grad of our class, so if you still have that outdated roster they sent us, I'm fifth from the top (Matt). Any more details on my identity and the bounty hunters might track me down... ;^)

Pending that it survives the long drive, my guitar will definitely be present at Reed. Feel free to play it anytime; I find that to be a great stress reliever, too, save for playing in front of lots of strangers (wouldn't recommend that for someone at my anti-skill level).

How about this idea: if your suite turns out to be directly above ours, let's install one of those brass firehouse poles that connects both common rooms. I think that would be just about the absolute coolest addition to any living space. A little inconvenient, what with the giant pole and all, but cool enough to charge admission as a ride. What better way to earn our monthly rent?

~Matthias

Hey Matt!
The pole idea's great by me! I don't know how my roommates will take it, though. DSMD seems really chill and Tara's cool too...it's just the fourth one from MIT...hmmm.... 🙂 haha...j/k! I don't know anything about her yet.

As for the guitar...I only know how to play a few chords: G...D...C...hmm...that's about it. But it's amazing how some songs only require those three!

I leave Korea tomorrow! I need to prepare for my 24-hour plane trip! 😱

Hello all,

Welcome Matthias! The pole idea sounds like fun--how about an underground tunnel from Mt. Washington to Reed Hall--that would be really convenient for me!! Nylee, looks like we'll be in the air at the same time--except my trip isn't quite 24hrs--is it direct or do you stop anywhere (I'd assume the plane would need to fill up somewhere along the way)? I hope your flight goes well. Well, I've almost finished packing. It's amazing how much "STUFF" I have--thank goodness my parents can each check 3 pieces of luggage too--what would I do without them?!!

I'm looking forward to meeting you all when I arrive in Baltimore.

Olivia

Hey Liv2b..I hope you have a safe flight as well! I have a stopover in Tokyo (Narita international) and one in O'Hare--Chicago. I am not looking forward to sitting in O'Hare for four hours. Does anyone know any cool things to do at O'Hare? oh wait...Stryer...I forgot. Must read 170 pages in a week!

see ya'll soon!

I haven't gotten the bill, either. I thought I'd have received it in the mail while on vacation, but that was not to be. Looks like we've slipped through the financial cracks. Free ride all the way, guys (portrait of a naive human being).

I called the registrar before I left for vacation two weeks ago, and they said tuition wouldn't arrive until around a week prior to our arrival. Well, that's about now, I'd say. But the general attitude among them was that it didn't matter very much; tuition would "ultimately" arrive and "hopefully" get paid in due time.

I'm just "hoping" that bill misses my address completely. That should buy us a few more weeks of ignorance over here....

Just got back from Neverland about two hours ago to find a bill from Hopkins sitting on my bed. Guess no free ride love for me... 🙁

Hey everybody,

I also got the bill. Tuition is covered by MSTP but unfortunately I have to pay the medical insurance and microscope fees.

My question is about the health/dental coverage. I signed up for one person (me) and it stated the monthly premium was $116 for health and $8.40 for dental.

Since the bill is for one semester (sept thru december) which is 4 months, the total cost for this should be ($116 + $8.40)*4 = $497

However, the bill is charging me $746.40 instead.

Is that the same amount on your bill? Am i missing something here?

As a medical student, you're on a 12-month schedule. As such, your tuition, microscope fees, premiums, etc. are divided in half, since you're charged twice a year (in September and January). The $746.40 represents six months of coverage.

Cheers,
doepug (MS III)

Looks like the Bill Brigade came a' callin' today. Tuition et al.

Guess this means I should call it quits on expanding the extensive faberge egg collection for awhile. Pricey hobby.😛

DON"T WORRY GUYS...
I was freaked out by my bill too...so I went to financial affairs and they told me it was all a mistake. They sent us wrong information and they will redo everything and give it back to us during orientation.

I checked into REED HALL TODAY!!!!!!!!!!! But I didn't see any of you guys.... 🙁

Let me know when you guys are moving in, ok?

See ya'll real soon!

P.S. I'm in Baltimore now! YAY!

I was assured my bill was a mistake, too. I get to pay $2,500 MORE to Hopkins than I originally thought. Thanks JHU! 😡

BTW, nylee, why is MO called the Show Me state?

Hey Nylee,

I came over to visit you at about 10:00pm, maybe you were fast alseep, jet lagged and all -- so I didn't knock too loudly. Anyway, come over and visit me when you get a chance. I should be in tomorrow until about 10:00am. After that I'm heading off to lab, and will probably live there until the night... if not, I'll try coming upstairs on Sunday morning.

I'm in 4A. You're in 10D, right?

Rasi (a.k.a. Sonic)

p.s. How do you pronounce your realname? Or do you prefer to be called by your middle name?

Hey dudes!
Looks like a lot of people moved in today!

Incendiary: MO is called the show-me state because...they couldn't think of a better name. umm...but here's another reason care of http://www.sos.state.mo.us/archives/history/slogan.asp:

The most widely known legend attributes the phrase to Missouri's U.S. Congressman Willard Duncan Vandiver, who served in the United States House of Representatives from 1897 to 1903. While a member of the U.S. House Committee on Naval Affairs, Vandiver attended an 1899 naval banquet in Philadelphia. In a speech there, he declared, "I come from a state that raises corn and cotton and cockleburs and Democrats, and frothy eloquence neither convinces nor satisfies me. I am from Missouri. You have got to show me." Regardless of whether Vandiver coined the phrase, it is certain that his speech helped to popularize the saying.

Other versions of the "Show-Me" legend place the slogan's origin in the mining town of Leadville, Colorado. There, the phrase was first employed as a term of ridicule and reproach. A miner's strike had been in progress for some time in the mid-1890s, and a number of miners from the lead districts of southwest Missouri had been imported to take the places of the strikers. The Joplin miners were unfamiliar with Colorado mining methods and required frequent instructions. Pit bosses began saying, "That man is from Missouri. You'll have to show him."

However the slogan originated, it has since passed into a different meaning entirely, and is now used to indicate the stalwart, conservative, noncredulous character of Missourians.

ok...I know you probably didn't care to know all of that, though. Where are you living again, Incendiary?? Tenth floor?

Rasi, I actually just checked in to get my key and visit you guys...but I didn't stay overnight. I think I'm going to start sleeping at Reed maybe Sunday night or monday night. I still have some things to wrap up in my old apartment. But I will surely be at Reed from 9 or 10 am until 5 or 6 pm moving stuff in tomorrow (Saturday).

oh...and my name...you can call me anything from Grace to Sophia to Nahyoung to dork or manatee or whatever you feel like. I've been raised with the name Nahyoung (pronounced: "Nah" rhymes with "blah" and "young" rhymes with "tongue" or "sung")

see ya'll tomorrow!!! And I heard the pool party's underway!

nahyoung

I'm probably moving in tomorrow afternoon, if I can bring myself around to start packing tonight... And no parking space for me. I'll get one next year, after I've moved off-campus into a neighborhood where I won't be mugged every night. 😉

I have an odd question...How's the food situation at Reed? Any place to get breakfast and/or late-night eats? I guess I'll find out when I get there, but I don't wanna live off ramen the first week.

lizardking,
I'm not too sure about the food situation, but I think we need to hunt/forage for our own food. There is a cafeteria in the hospital which is not that great (except for the new subway that they installed there)...but other than that, I don't know of any great place to eat breakfast.

If any of you guys know differently, please correct me...I HOPE I'm wrong.
when are you moving into Reed?

Incendiary...I may pay you a visit tomorrow evening, if you're there!

4 more days till orientation!!!! Hooray!

when are you gonna move to jh lizard?

Hey all -

While there are lots of places for lunch (be sure to check out the market (down Monument St) and the souvlaki guy at Wolfe & Monument Sts), it's a bit trickier to find late-night eats at JHH.

The hospital has Subway and the Oasis, which are open until midnight. Unfortunately, if you want food from the hospital after then, you'll have to hit the vending machines.

I recommend getting a healthy stack of take-out and delivery menus, and be sure to grab a copy of the yellow pages... there are plenty of decent places (Chinese, pizza, Indian, Italian) that will deliver to Reed.

Baltimore has dozens of great late-night havens if you venture off-campus. There are all kinds of diners and such (I'm sure nylee is familiar with some of these...) that are great options if you have a car at your disposal. My favorite dive is the Sip & Bite (on Boston St, in Canton) -- it's open 24/7, and $5 will buy quite a bit of food. Of course, every student in B'more has to hit the Paper Moon Diner sometime late at night too, but I think the food is a bit over-priced.

Cheers,
doepug

Thanks Doepug and Nylee. I wish there were a 3-meal cafeteria in Reed, but oh well, the situation seems ok.

I'll be moving in Tues. or Wed. Looking forward to hanging out with the SDN crew.

I have to second doepug's recommendation of the market. They must have like 60 booths in there with every kind of food from Thai to barbecue chicken to pizza to pancakes. Its cheaper than the cafeteria in the outpatient center too.

If you are walking east on Monument St, go past the parking garage on Washington & Monument up another couple of blocks and its in a huge building on the right side of the street.

Yum! I love the Northeast Market! Especially the chicken fajitas at Surf and Wok...I think. OK Oriental has pretty good korean food too.

Hey Doepug,
I saw your picture outside of the financial aid office! Lookin good!
