Hey guys,
Just called the NYCOM F.A. lady - she said that we'll be receiving our Grad Plus check at about the same time as the Stafford checks, which is 2 - 3 weeks after classes start. According to her, the school isn't allowed to disburse the remaining amount to us until after classes begin

Probably wanna make sure we're gonna actually attend there and not run off the with cash. :meanie:

ok, so i'm just checking something here. i've done the following:

* sent transcripts
* gotten stafford and grad plus loans lined up/sent forms to NYCOM fin aid

i'm getting my immunizations and am going to send that form this week.

anything else currently due? i know there's:

* parking form
* health insurance

but when are those due? and when do we register?

bahhh!! stress! but i'm flying out tuesday to come get an apartment. maybe having that set will help with the up in the air feeling. or only make it worse. ugh.

I'm pretty sure that time is set aside for us during orientation to take care of parking and health insurance forms. And I dont think we need to register since everyone will be on the same schedule (either DPC or lecture based)

Whats this Hasselhoff business? What happened to Arnold? 🙂

While Arnold's running around being the Govenator, I had to look around for someone else popular among German speaking people...

**EDIT** BTW, if you haven't seen his latest music video, from which I made my avatar, here is the link

Everyone knows The true Knight Rider 2000 didn't have the driver's side on the (Euro) right. Damn sellout!!

I'm not sure what the appeal is for him as an international rock star but for the frist time hearing his stuff it is somewhat entertaining in a tongue-in-cheek sort of way.

So I have not received a letter about DPC so I am guessing that means I am not in 🙁 I know that PBL works best for me and have gotten into programs at other schools so I am bummed that the school I decided to go to did not accept me. Any advice? I wrote Dr. Protanova an e-mail explaining how much I would love to be a part of the program, is there anything else you all can think of that I should do to help my chances? Thanks!

A few months ago, someone posted a sample MS1 schedule, does anyone still have a copy of it? I know roughly that the fundamentals thread was from August 29 - End of September, Immunology thread was from October 11- about November 22, Intergumentory system thread was from November 28- Dec 21, Neuro 1, Neuro 2, and Neuro 3 ran from January 3rd to April 12 and that the rest of the year until May 31 was Musculoskeletal System. I am looking more for a weekly schedule rather than a yearly outline - can anyone help. Thank you. Looking forward to a great year!

Dont assume you're not in yet - maybe they send them out according to when you applied? So if we applied earlier than you, maybe we found out earlier than you? You can also call and speak to Barbara, she's very friendly, shes Portanova's assistant and she may be able to confirm your status.
:luck:

Our weekly schedule is worthless since yours will be completely different. The only thing that will probably not change too much is the overall schedule I posted already.

Hey there was a Canadian at my interview too, what a coincidence! How aboot that?!

Hey Yanky5...what exactly is the fundamentals thread? Is that like a how to be a doctor type thing or a review of undergrad science courses?

Starting NYCOM students looking to share a 3BR, 3Floor, 2.5 bath duplex in Glen Cove. This place is awesome. It's on a dead end street so parking is no problem, and it's 2 blocks from downtown glen cove, where there are bars, restaurants, gym, movie theater, marina, etc. all walking distance. It's about 0.6 miles to nearest LIRR station. NYCOM is a 7 min drive w/o traffic and a 10 min drive w/ traffic. The place even has a garage, basement storage and a patio in the back off the kitchen. It's hardwood floors throughout. The kitchen is nice and has a real marble countertop and a dishwasher. Central A/C. There are 2.5 bathrooms; the 1/2 bathroom has a washer and dryer in it that I grabbed for $150 total, which we would be splitting. Your rent would be $550/month plus a split of the utilities. We have to give a 2 month security. Hoping to find another non-smoking male NYCOM student to share with. Send a PM if interested!

I drove out to NYCOM today and picked up the Bates book. It was $90 😡 !!!

I also asked about the window decals for our cars and they think that they stopped making the long ones that say "New York College of Osteopathic Medicine" and now they only have ones that say "NYCOM" and then "New York College of Osteopathic Medicine" in small letters underneath. This one is one of those reusable plastic ones and it goes on the inside of the window. If your windows are tinted don't even bother. I got one and you can't even see it.

sorry actually I have NYIT as one of my schools in my profile. When I go to my home page I see

" Visit My School Home Page
What's new at your school: NYIT"

clicking on that brings me to the NYIT page with the ads.

Although most of you probably already thought of this, I didn't so I figured I would post it here. Jason's post made me realize - Since we won't get our loan checks until 2 or 3 weeks into the year, and we'll need our textbooks before then, we'll have to budget in for textbooks. Just a heads up

It seems to me the student handbook link link from the class of 2010 webboard disappeared. I am talking about the big handbook, that had sample schedule enfo from last year's class and some other helpful stuff. Now it has been replaced with a smaller version that just details orientation stuff. Anyone know what happened to it, or the link (if there is still a link), because i did not print a copy prior to it being taken down, assuming it would stay on there....

The new handbook does suck, its hard to read and organized pretty badly, like a collection of papers. would be nice to have higher quality material for 40K.

Anyways, can someone please post some good links for laptop selections and any advise.
I never needed one before and now i do, i GUESS, although i dont know for what exactly if i already have a pc at home. Anyways, someone please advise. I knwo ALOT about computers but laptop diversity is tremendous and really want to know what features are important.

Thanks.

cnet.com is nice for reviews of electronics. You should also consider a tablet PC. I went with a laptop though.

whatever you choose it does give you the ability to go anywhere and stream lectures. Also you can store class notes and PDFs of your medical school books.

I also went with a laptop. i have a dell xps system. i purchased it a month or two ago when it was at the lowest price ever (discontinued model).

for durability, i'd go with the ever so expensive thinkpad.
for the most bang for your buck, i'd go with dell.

currently, dell is running a 10 days of deals thing. and there's a lenovo thinkpad at office depot that's running for 999 with 300 dollars mail in rebate, for a total of 600 dollars for a thinkpad. it's a decent deal.

in addition, you can always go for the most basic model. just make sure you have enough ram. 512 is good, but 1 gb is better.

i haven't had any experience with HPs, compaqs, and whatever else there is in the world. Sony Vaios are interesting, but my pockets are shallow so it was never an option for me.

for those that are shopping for printers - epsons suck.

Do we get free printing @ NYCOM? I think one of my tour guides told me we can print at NYIT for free but I forget...

My advice would be what I posted before: Any cheap laptop would do as long as it has a dvd drive and wireless 802.11b access. I used a 6 year old laptop. Dell has laptops for under $500. Don't get more than you need. And I am still using a 6 year old laptop (now it is seven years old lol). If you want to have a laugh, this is what I used for NYCOM: Compaq armada 7400 laptop: Pentium two 366 mhz cpu, 256 megs of ram, 20 gig hard drive. I also had a pentium two 333/192/10 gig IBM thinkpad that I used. That's like one tenth the speed of today's cheapest laptops.

Oh, and if you have a PC at home, you don't need the laptop. It is just a matter of convienence to have one. NYCOM never asked us so far to bring a laptop.

Thanks for all the replies. I am starting to think a tablet should be good, i found a thread on it and it seems that it MAY be usefull for some things.

Does anyone know if we get the PP presentations online or only printed versions (since if you get a tablet then you can write notes on the presentations on the laptop with a stylus)?

Like Yanky5 said, i dont know if it pays to get a laptop but i probably will for the hell of it, whats an extra $1500 on top of 160K. On that note maybe i''ll get a bimmer also, lol.

I'm waiting for the Dell end of quarter deals; supposedly their fiscal quarter ends in July. Never pay full price for a dell. They regularly have 30% and 35% off coupon codes floating around. People also sell dell coupons on ebay for a couple bucks.

Get the nicest screen you can afford; you are gonna be staring at it for years. If you want a 15 inch, grab an e1505 when on sale; if you want a 17 inch, get an e1705 or an XPS. If you're just using for school work, the bare minimum will be more than enough; however, if you're gonna game on it, make sure you upgrade the CPU, get a 7200 RPM hard drive, at least 1 GB RAM, and a upgraded videocard (Geforce 7900 should do nicely).I'm still holding out for the next sale...

Two things that come to mind regarding laptops. Firstly, if you visit www.edealinfo.com on a regular basis you will probably come across very nice deals on Dell laptops. Secondly, it pays to purchase an extended warranty that has screen coverage. I bought a cheap laptop at Bestbuy 3 years ago and I just got a new Toshiba fully loaded because the other computer crapped out on me. Now I have another 3 years warranty (cost me $400 to upgrade everything).

Also, there have been many deals out there for low end laptops (Celeron and less ram) for $400ish.

Regular checker of http://slickdeals.net right here. Got my XPS system off there when it was posted to be a "hot deal." Upgraded the ram to 1gb, and went for the TrueLife screen. Total : 800.

Hey Guys,

Just thought it was time to say hi 🙂

Have you all figured out where you are living yet? I am waiting until August 1st so I don't have to sign a July lease... is this really stupid?

Also, I am planning on moving in before the 21st (not totally sure when yet), but I want to be familiar with the area before school starts. I was thinking it would be cool to try to meet up with some classmates before orientation. Anybody game?

Also, do we actually have real classes on the 22nd? That seems kind of quick.

Looking forward to meeting all of you soon. Hope everyone is enjoying the rest of their summers!

Hey,
I actually was lookin around for a place and was told to look in Aug to avoid July rent. But i actually found a nice place in Glen Cove and the landlord is letting me pay as of Aug 1st 😀 There are a few places listed by private owners who would let you pay Aug 1st.
I'm plannin on moving in prob the 15th - give myself some time to unpack and check out the area 😎

Like fenix just said, it'd probably be good to look now. Alot of landlords start showing the place before the actual available date, in order to have someone move in right away. The way I see it, it's better to start paying rent in July and have a really nice place to live the rest of the year, then holdoff till August and end up with what's left over. I'd definitely start looking thoroughly now.

Hey future classmates,

Am I the only one freaking out about the cost of our 4 years? How the heck are we going to pay off over $250K ? I have my paperwork in, etc, but this is scaring me senseless.

How are you guys dealing with it??

thanks!

Hey, I'm planning an August 1st move-in date and it took me WAY too long to find a place. Fortunately, as of yesterday that search has come to an end. If you're having trouble finding somewhere check out danielgale.com I worked with Melisa Mindich (said Ma-LEE-sa) (516) 759-6822 Ext. 104
I had a rough time with realtors, and she was great. So, I wanted to pass her name along. She only showed us liveable places in good areas with the specifications asked for. Check out the site and if you speak with her say Danielle (me) recommended her. PM me if you have any questions.

Hi All...

Just wanted to say hello and congratulations to all the incoming first years. You did it!! In any event, I will be a NYCOM second year come August; soooooo.....if anyone has any questions whatsoever, please do not hesitate to PM or IM me. I'm glad to be of assistance. Again....congratulations to all!! 😀

hi all. trying to find a place in queens or brooklyn for the past few days, and just bit the bullet and got a broker. ugh.

i need some good thoughts for the next day and a half (when i have to fly back to CA, with or without an apartment)....or else i'll be trying to cram my furniture into a cardbord box on the street!

blargh!

Congrats to all that have been accepted into medical school. It's a tough road and it starts with finding a place to live. Well, I have a room for rent in a 4 bedroom house in Westbury which is less than 10 minutes of back roads to school, less than 10 minutes from Roosevelt Field Mall(which is one of the biggest malls in the country), and less than a minute from the highway.

The rent is only $425/month plus about 25 bux a month for cable/cable internet, and about 35-40/month for utilities, heat is included in the rent. There is driveway parking, dishwasher, and washer/dryer. There are currently 3 male occupants of the other 3 rooms, 2 are interns, and one is a 2nd year student.

If interested, please PM me. The room is available the beginning of August.

Good Luck and enjoy your summer off prior to starting.

Definetly interested still dont have a place near school to live. Also a first year 22 yr old male let me know how to get in contact with you about taking a look at this place.

I am a 22 yr old male looking for other male roomates in any area near
school. I have already looked at some housing in Glen Cove Sea Cliff and
Hempstead. Willing to consider any options with any number of roomates.
Please contact me at [email protected] or cell # 973-710-6637. The school seems to have a done a pretty horrific job of setting all of this up for us, anyone with suggestions or advice is welcome. Thanks.

LOL. I forgot to send in my immunization form.

Anyone else? 😳

Anyone hear anything from Grad Plus? I checked online and it said I was approved but thats all I got.

Two second year medical students at NYCOM are currently seeking a 3rd housemate in Glen Cove. The house is 3br, 2 1/2 baths with full living room, kitchen, basement, desk room and back yard. It is conveniently located 10 minutes from school and near all the necessities (stores, coffee shops, gyms etc). Rent includes absolutely everything...cable, high speed internet, heat, central air, washer, dryer, dishwasher, water and a landscaping service which mows the lawn). The house is in very good condition and offers hassle-free living. The landlord is great and is over within minutes if you need anything. Male or female roomates are acceptable, we only ask that the person be somewhat studious and clean. If you are interested or have any further questions please email [email protected]
