I'm debating whether I want to work or not too. I'm a saxophone player and I'm normally highered by local theaters on the island to be in their pit orchestras a few nights a week but i'm not sure if this will be a good idea or not since the amount of studying that we are about to have. I think i'm going to give it a month or so before i decide to work or not suring the year.

Can you take the first month off, see how it is, and then decide?

Yeah, I can do whatever works for me. Once a Kaplan employee, always a Kaplan employee 🙂. I think I am going to slow my hours down to as much proctoring as possible and a 1-2 tutoring students at a time. I love working there, having the extra money, and seeing everyone there I have become so close with. Thanks for the advice 🙂.

going to try to work 4-6 works/week myself. Absolutely no work my first 4 weeks and go from there.

Please please...It's "T. S. ELIOT," not "T. S. ELLIOT"...thank you.

The man spent his entire life and career tyring to Anglicanize himself. Let us honor his wishes.

Has anyone bought the Bate's book requested by NYCOM yet? I read another post that says we should wait till classes start to buy the actual books. Anyways... the orientation handbook says that we should get it. Should I wait till classes start to get a stethoscope as well? Thanks

Hey does anyone know what happens around christmas break, like are we going to have test when we come back the week of the 2nd b/c I'm going to Vegas for the break and I want to know if I have to worry about studying or if we just start a new section.

so many good ques!...
I have a question too, since we basically have one day for orientation do you think we needa 'dress up' for it, or is it just gunna be casual? 😕

My name is Andrea and I too will be joining you next fall at NYCOM. I interviewed the first week of January and sent my deposit in this week. I currently live in Manhattan and have been out of school for 5 years doing clinical and lab research at a hospital in the city.

I'm looking forward to starting school again next year and meeting all of my fellow classmates.

Does anyone know if many NYCOM students commute from Manhattan?

Hi fellow 2010 classmates. I live on the UWS and will be driving to class each day. I have a 4 passanger car with one other 1st year student riding with me to class each morning. Looking for 1-2 more classmates who live in Manhattan or Queens to join us.

I think I will wear slacks and a button down shirt the first day of school and jeans from there on. During the interview tour NYCOM students were casual with jeans.

do u guys think we need to bring anything on the first day like binders or something?

Anyone caught without all of the required books on the first day of class will be punished and/or humiliated. Fortunately, I'm selling some books. Mostly newest editions. Contact me on AIM for book-related specifics.

Please refer to the 09er's class thread about what you should wear the first day of classes:

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=169459&page=21&pp=15

There have already been several students who paid the price for not honoring NYCOM's dress code, and I would hate for it to happen to you guys.

Cheers.

It's kind of mean to be making the first years buy books from you in fear of being "punished and/or humiliated". I'll assume you're just joking.

That's OK. Get white gold for now, and switch to platinum after your first loan disbursment. Hardly anyone can tell the difference.

Nobody should buy any books until they start. They will meet with the upperclassmen who will give them some advice on what books to buy and what books to not waste money on. But, take that advice with a grain of salt because everyone studies and learns differently. If someone says that a certain book is good or bad, ask them why they thought so, don't just say great, i'll go buy it.

he he he

i'll be the girl in the old black converse all stars, jeans, torn ac/dc t-shirt, glasses, and black fingernails carrying a pat benatar crimes of passion record purse and an authentic mid to late-80's trapper keeper (thanks to my friend who bidded on dozens of them for me on ebay). i will look glum and vaguely annoyed (i usually do). i do not, however, bite...that is, unless you like that sort of thing.

I'm planning on moving in kinda early, around the 15th of Aug. to get my apartment set up 😉

You're lucky. Most of us have moved in already or will move in on the first of August. In a perfect world I would have liked to not pay rent until the 18 of Aug. since I don't need more than a day to move all my stuff.

Moving this weekend! Which means a few days to set up the apartment, then many days to sit on the beach and go to Six Flags!!

Actually, I'm paying as of Aug. 1st as well but since I'm still working, the earliest i could move in is the 15th of Aug. So basically im paying like 2 weeks of rent for nothing, lol.
...and I thought I was moving in early! 🙄

which six flags you going to? The one in Jersey has the water park, great adventure, and Safari. There is a Wawa right next to it also. I did not get to try Wawa because I ate before I drove by it.

okay, what are people wearing the first day. and what is nycom's dress code. never heard of it

New Jersey (the safari is definitely a staple), and I've ever heard of the Wawa. Please enlighten me.

oh and is anyone interested in taking the required bls for healthcare providers before the start of class so not to waste a complete saturday??

I'm planning on moving in that weekend as well, that way I have a week to unwind/get settled b4 school starts.

😱 Wawa = 😍

Wawa is some fast food place the NJ people rave about. Never been there and have no idea if it is the food, drinks, or deserts that people like. Maybe nvshelat can help out.

No dress code. During interview tours I saw students dressed in jeans/slacks.

BLS probably costs about $80+ if you take it outside of NYCOM unless you get it free from work/volunteering. I will waste my saturday since I have a lot more time than I have money.

Correction, Wawa is some place South Jersey people talk about. We don't have them in North Jersey. In South Jersey and PA they are abundant; they're like a quickie mart or 7-ELEVEN.

We had a WaWa in Delaware...they're like a glorified 7-11 with a deli in them, nothing too special....although their English Toffee coffee is amazing!

Hey guys! I have no clue where to start as I did not expect this acceptance so late in the game. I am thrilled but also worried as I havent even filled out FAFSA yet! If you guys have any advice for me or know of what things I should have in order now I would love to hear them! Do I have to go to campus to buy books prior to August 21?
THANKS!

No, many students on here have recommended waiting until after we start class before purchasing books, as it seems many of the required books are a waste of money.

Make sure you fill out the FAFSA and return your immunization form once they send that to you.

If you're planning on moving near the school, it'd be wise to hurry up and look for a place now.

Welcome to the class. :luck:

Also, like PlasticMan said, find a place to live - you can use Craigslist, SDN, newsday, or the nycom webboard.

Congrats!!!

They're sandwiches are great and I love their coffee/capachino (sp?). Wawa was where I got my late night food from all the time in college (and by all the time I mean practically every night). Whenever I'd need to pull allnigthers, I'd get one of their giant Iced tea cartons - for a $1.57 that baby will keep you going all night

nv, I remember when Wawa was the only grocery-store-like place near campus way back in the day.....how spoiled Penn students are now! 😉

yes, the cheap -- but surprisingly filling/tasty -- Wawa hoagies and the AWESOME English Toffee 99cent cappuccino are definitely Wawa highlights -- and yeah the "glorified 7/11" description is right on. Thank gosh for Wawa being right down the block from my apartment in Philly the last couple of years or I would have had to blow half my paycheck on Starbucks on my way to work!!

For those not familiar with Wawa, its definitely NOT worth a side trip  But if you pass one, getting food from there will save you a LOT of money in comparison to Six Flags or whatever other NJ/PA destination you may be headed to.....

PS - Hunter i agree with the greater time than money thing.....i'm definitely "wasting" my Saturday so that I can get a free BLS course out of it!

pps - people need to seriously stop fretting about the "dress code"!! Then again, we get our ID pictures taken during orientation.....so maybe I'll actually make an effort that first day so i don't have to be horrified by my ID picture for the next 4 years!! 😛

Hey All!

Just wanted to introduce myself in this thread. I'm Kristin (from Queens) and I just found out I was accepted to NYCOM Class of 2010! I can't wait to meet you all in a few weeks! Did you guys start any sort of a contact list yet or plan on meeting before school starts?

Also, I am SO CONFUSED about all of this financial aid stuff. I filed my FAFSA already. The $1500 deposit is about all I can afford right now...will I be required to pay any tuition before any of my loan/financial aid stuff comes through? Do you think I should just call financial aid and set up a day to meet with them?

Enjoy the rest of summer!

You may get a bill but ignore it as long as you complete FAFSA now. There is a waiting list for perkins loans if they are still available and you need to call NYCOM regarding that. After the $1500 deposit there is nothing to pay. You will get a partial refund about 3 weeks after school starts if you are getting money back from financial aid.

I believe that NYCOM will be providing printed out class notes for us

Ok there was a thread about Wawa and I thought it was a fast food place with "good" food. McDonanlds and Wawa are less than a 1/4mile from Six Flags.

Dress Code: I was just thinking that I don't remember seeing anyone wearing scrubs. I thought most schools had a policy wearing scrubs. Maybe it's not cool at NYCOM.

I kinda want to school to start now but I think I need to soak in a little more of this laziness. 😎

Do you suggest just calling NYCOM and asking all of my questions?

I remember freshman year doing my grocery shopping at Wawa... where grocery shopping consisted of buying Cheese Whiz, oreos, milk, bread, and ice cream 😀 I didn't even know there was campus beyond 38th street back then, nm a grocery store. Ahhh those were the days...

NYCOM gives you a financial aid package with all the info for private loans and grad plus loans. I sent you a private message regarding financial aid.
