It seems to me the student handbook link link from the class of 2010 webboard disappeared. I am talking about the big handbook, that had sample schedule enfo from last year's class and some other helpful stuff. Now it has been replaced with a smaller version that just details orientation stuff. Anyone know what happened to it, or the link (if there is still a link), because i did not print a copy prior to it being taken down, assuming it would stay on there....

Apologies if someone else already posted about this but I am behind in reading recent posts....

The BIG student handbook link was actually LAST year's handbook -- you're right it had last year's academic calendar and other helpful things. I had posted it a while back because at the time, no current academic calendar had been posted........it was NOT on our webboard but it was actually on the Class of 2009 page on the main NYCOM page.

http://iris.nyit.edu/nycom/Class_info_2009.htm

If you go to that link now, the NEW HANDBOOK has been posted! 👍 It is MUCH more comprehensive than the silly, badly-formatted word document that is our orientation info. This has all the stuff the previous one had and it has an UPDATED Academic Calendar for 2006-2007 yay!

Hope that helps!

LOL. I forgot to send in my immunization form.

Anyone else? 😳

I also didn't get to send in my form by the 15th since I received the paperwork the day before so I called Admissions and spoke to Ms. Croot... and she said to just get it as soon as possible and it wasn't a problem if it was a few days late.

Just got off a waitlist... not sure if I was meant to be a new yorker. Good luck to everyone 🙂

Do you think we could trust the booklist for the 2010 class and start lookin for those texts online...? The list was for last year but Im figuring its pretty much similar to what we will need.

Hi All-

Due to a mishap with my old Dell, I have received a brand new Dell laptop as a replacement for my old one. I, however, decided to buy a Mac, and now I have a Dell laptop to do with as I please. The specs are below. It is priced, without any rebates or deals, as being worth $1800, which for many I am sure is way too expensive. However, if any of you are interested, feel free to pm me.

Dell Inspiron T2300/E1505
2.0 Intel Processor
1 GB Ram
100 GB Hard Drive
a/b/g wireless interent
bluetooth ready
Windows XP Professional
DVD/CD Reader/Writer Combo Drive built in
Ridiculous amounts of software comes with it, as well

Some current NYCOM students suggested we wait until classes start to get recommendations from 2nd years. don't go buying all of the books/notes without asking around first.

Starting NYCOM students looking to share a 3BR, 3Floor, 2.5 bath duplex in Glen Cove. This place is awesome. It's on a dead end street so parking is no problem, and it's 2 blocks from downtown glen cove, where there are bars, restaurants, gym, movie theater, marina, etc. all walking distance. It's about 0.6 miles to nearest LIRR station. NYCOM is a 7 min drive w/o traffic and a 10 min drive w/ traffic. The place even has a garage, basement storage and a patio in the back off the kitchen. It's hardwood floors throughout. The kitchen is nice and has a real marble countertop and a dishwasher. Central A/C. There are 2.5 bathrooms; the 1/2 bathroom has a washer and dryer in it that I grabbed for $150 total, which we would be splitting. Your rent would be $550/month plus a split of the utilities. We have to give a 2 month security. Hoping to find another non-smoking male NYCOM student to share with. Send a PM if interested!

Showing the room from 12pm-2pm this saturday July 22. PM for more info / street address.

I know how you feel. All the decent places are incredibly expensive and some people are trying to rent out places that i would not recommend to an enemy.

yeah. i ended up shelling out a god awful amount of money to a broker to get a livable place. but i managed to do it, for which i'm grateful. i will, in fact have a (perhaps much too expensive) roof over my head come august at least.

good luck to everyone...it really really does suck, and i sympathize and send good housing karma to you all.

Getting your first place in NYC can be tough. Congrats. It's easier to get future apartments now that you live here. Common topics at parties is living arangements.

I remember a broker showing me a place in manhattan that had only one window which was in the kitchen. It faced another builing about 3 feet away. I thought places like that only existed in the movies.

does anyone know what the class schedule and what books (and what type of notebooks) we need to get yet?

No i really think we'll need to wait til orientation to get all that info. Til then enjoy your not-as-empty-as-it-soon-will-be wallet 😉

can't say anything about the books but I hear binders are recommended. This way you can keep everything in one place and save them for the boards.

Hi, I found a wonderful 3 bedroom apartment. I have seen several places and this one is among the best. Very spacious. Large living room/Dining room in Glen Cove (10 min from school). Rent would be about $625 for one of the bedrooms +utilities. Please PM me if you would be interested or email at [email protected]

Hey guys, i was talking to a third year about how time consuming med school would be and he mentioned that its gunna be really busy (studying 24/7) and basically no time for hanging out with friends or chillen out. I know Med school is tough and im def prepared for that but do you really think there's not gunna be any down time?... 🙁

a few NYCOM folks on SDN just finishing 1st year say differently. The person starting third year was before the major curriculum change. We should have relatively more free time compared to them. Exams seem to be 4-6 weeks apart and you can stream lectures at home. Days off similar to undergrad too with winter and spring break. Some of the reasons I chose NYCOM.

👍

does anyone know what the gym is like at nycom? i remember from the interview that they said it wasn't much, but what exactly constitutes, "not much"?

I've been wondering the same thing. Every time I'm over there I try to get a look at it but it's always closed. I'm assuming it will be closed for the whole summer so us first years won't know anything until classes start.

I even asked to be shown it during my interview tour, but they skirted around it saying we didn't have enough time to see it. I'm guessing it's not much and wondering if they even have shower facilities to clean up after the workout.

I was pondering joining a gym with a pool... lots of running has hurt my knees so I was thinking of sticking to lifting and doing some low impact cardio like swimming. I doubt their gym has a pool though.. maybe there are gyms with pools in the area?

There's a brand new gym opening up in the basement of roosevelt field mall (about 10 minutes from nycom) that is open 24/7. The gym is opening by the end of august and if you join soon it's only 49 bucks a month. I only know this because I got the brochure while in the mall yesterday but the gym is going to be state of the art with an olympic size pool, saunas, jacuzzis, basketball court, etc.

Head over to roosevelt field if you're interested in joining because the guy said the price is going to go up soon if you don't lock it in.

I think the Gym is pretty abysmal,, however all i really use is free weights benches and treadmills in the winter so maybe ill be OK. they kind of shyed away from showing us too.

Yeah, I saw it at the open house in November and it was really bad. I cant see how anyone could get a good work out there. Half the room is a lounge with a big screen TV and a couch. 0

That's my kind of gym! 😀

Bally's in Old Westbury has a pool but I never been there. I have a membership so will check it out when school starts. If you ever were a member of Bally's you can reup for $12-$20/month.

The NYCOM gym is pretty small. Seemed to have about 15 pieces of equipment in a 30' x 30' space. If nobody uses the gym that should be good enough but with 500+ students between 1st/2nd year...

someone said something about the NYIT gym.

Hunter, did they at least have a bench, and a squat rack? That's all I really need... Also does anyone know if we have 24 hour access or at least early morning access? Did you happen to notice if there were any shower facilities so we don't have to go to class all sweaty all day?

For those who want a good 17 inch laptop, Dell Home is having a sale right now. There's 35% off $999 coupons that were emailed out to customers; if you don't have one, you can get one on ebay for like $1. You can pick up an E1705 for like $1070 now.

May be far for some but there is a new L.A. Fitness gym that just opened last year (or the year before, i forget) in New Hyde Park right next to LIJ Hospital. It's really awesome from inside but i believe it must be a pretty expensive membership, no idea. I've only gone in as a guest.

Here's the info

Apologies because I know this question has probably been posted before in this thread:

Where do you second years keep your loan money? And which ATMs are located close to campus?

I'm having a somewhat difficult time finding a bank close to either NYCOM or to my house in Little Neck that has free checking -- the only free checking i've been able to find is for either college students (under the age of 25, which as of Jan 2007 I won't qualify for anymore) or for those with direct deposit which we won't have either.....

any thoughts? thanks in advance!

I had the same question so I drove around a bit this Thursday. The only ATM I found close by was for Bank of America (right on Glen Cove rd, 1 block down, on right).

All of talking about gyms. I wonder how much we'll work out. 😀

My interview group was rushed through the gym and I was basically looking to see if they had a squat rack and bench. I remember seeing them but I could've been wrong since I did not actually enter the room.

There is a Halsman picture of Marilyn Monroe lifting weights. Very sexy.

I had called and asked about the gym they had mentioned they are in the process of moving it and it's all in limbo right now so hopefully they're making positive changes.

Hi All 🙂-

Are any of you continuing to work through the first year? I work for Kaplan, and I am not sure I want to quit. However, many people in my life are completely against it and think I should focus on school and only school. I know I could reduce my hours during the year in comparison to summer to make it easier, but am I shooting myself in the foot by working AND going to school?

Comments, questions... tell me I am crazy one way or the other 🙂!

I'm debating whether I want to work or not too. I'm a saxophone player and I'm normally highered by local theaters on the island to be in their pit orchestras a few nights a week but i'm not sure if this will be a good idea or not since the amount of studying that we are about to have. I think i'm going to give it a month or so before i decide to work or not suring the year.

Can you take the first month off, see how it is, and then decide?
