I'm going shopping for a dress to wear to a wedding. I'm a little intimidated, though, because the wedding is in an affluent part of New England and I'm just a casual Texas girl.

Don't we all! Being under dressed is always a nightmare! I'm sure everything will go wonderfully and you will look fabulous.

Aww thanks! Luckily the boyfriend is a pretty fashionable New Englander, so he's helping me pick it out.
Question, though. Maybe it's just here but I thought a simply black dress was appropriate for weddings? Evidently not? This is news to me...

I've never heard a particular rule (like the wearing white rule) or anything, but most people don't because black clothing is more synonymous with funerals.
Womp womp. I love black. Black, white, and gray are my favorites, and yet so inappropriate for weddings! A shame.
So, the weather here in Texas is amazing. It's low 90's with a breeze. How's the weather where y'all are at?

The white rule tacitly states that white is reserved for the bride. While not a strict rule by any means, the more formal or WASP a wedding, the stricter that and other rules hold true.
+1 As a gender fluid person myself, it was difficult to stay out of this one. But I knew better than to allow myself get riled up, especially when polar views are the least likely to alter based on evidence and debate.
Weather here is 70, which is pretty nice. Since I'll be outside for the next two hours its the perfect temp.

Agreed, its super easy for me to get angry at someone based off of things they have said on the internet. Which is ridiculous since debate is often quite futile. But hey, sometimes I can't help it.

This will be full-blown WASP wedding. I'm actually sort of looking forward to seeing what he considers totally normally and what a lower-middle class Texan thinks isn't normal 😀
LoL, I had a feeling it was a WASP wedding considering the locale. It's crazy. Prepare for an inundation of glib comments and formal minutiae. :shudder: But the food and drink should be exquisite, perhaps the entertainment, too, depending on the couple. Just have fun and take solace in the fact that if what you experience is awful, yours will be far better! XD

Yes and no, we had been together for 10 years, 6 of which were married, before separating and deciding to file for divorce once she finished her master's 🙁 We've always remained civil an intended to remain besties, but I just couldn't take it and have been avoiding her. The story is quite thick and involves her being with one of my very good friends from high school...
But on a more relevant note, we had initially planned a very large, spectacular wedding with about 100 guests or so. Then, on a whim while eating some Chinese food, we decided to cancel, reschedule our wedding on the beach in Lake Tahoe with a guest list of 6 and put the remainder of what we would have spent on our platinum rings, something that'd last forever. Not one single regret, it was simply amazing. :sigh:

Oh gods, at least it's not NoVA...that place is terrifying. I wore a bridesmaid's dress (strapless platinum, I kid you not) to a Homecoming dance, and 2 other girls had essentially the same dress on. I had figured I'd be overdressed; I only wore it because I refused to buy my 2nd dress ever/was dirt poor (I think that's still the only dress I've owned since my mom stopped shopping for me)!
Oh man, I feel you. The majority of my college was super-WASPy. Senior week events were really, really uncomfortable for that reason.
that's what happens when both me and the fiance are in greek life and i'm on a rugby team. so basically what i'm saying is my wedding is going to be very large and very very drunk

That sounds like it would be a VERY fun wedding reception to watch.
I'm sure you'll be fine if you change your name and go live in a remote country for 20 years! JK! I'm sure somebody caught on to the fine print (which was too well hidden haha)

I need to gush over my new coffee maker somewhere. I just got a french press. Socks = knocked off. Now I can taste the flavors in my coffee, without that icky "plastic/drip coffee machine" feel.
This morning, I made coffee so strong I was feeling nervous on my walk to work.

Bah! Just wikipedia'd the thing. I like my French press because it is easy to clean, and I'm not sure I can sacrifice that for a new contraption... but it looks like it produces delicious coffee.

French press is definitely the only way to roll.
Haha, I actually don't drink coffee, I just have to hear about it and often wash the dishes...I find the two similar in cleaning ease, so I'd say that the real advantage of the french press is that you can use it anywhere you can boil water...aka anywhere with an electric kettle, microwave, stove, OR hot water dispenser, while the Moka requires a stove.
So it's really a question of coffee quality (very good vs better) and flexibility (aka can I bring it to the science center and make coffee at any hour)...French press is the more logical option!

I have yet to experience a wedding reception while being of legal drinking age. I want to feel the joy that comes with an open bar. one day...
Muy interesante...usually no one gets carded at weddings...but then again, I've only been to Irish and German weddings where it was either 95% German or nearly unintelligible Brogue being spoken... LoL That might have had something to do with it.
I've never been carded at a wedding either

Well, not everybody has the means to get a classic like that. Lol
I have mine more for work than for play. I ride to work daily, rain, shine, heat or cold.
Very good point (classic vs utilitarian). I know a few people that do that. It sure does save a lot of gas money if you have thick enough skin to keep it up. Props, my friend. It gets pretty darn hot and cold where you live. :sigh of envy:

Also, while it does stay in the triple digits every day for a few months each summer here, it doesn't get too incredibly cold. At least not like northern Michigan winters. Brrr!

Ok so I guess it gets fairly cold here some mornings in the winter. My battery started going on me so I rigged up a poor mans engine clock heating system using a heat lamp.

My dad had a Honda Goldwing when I was growing up. It was basically a car without doors. Backseat had a back rest, it had a trunk, and we had helmets with microphones and radio in them. Spoiled me!

Well its not like I'm being carded, its just that the only weddings i've ever been to were when I was a teenager, and before I experienced the joys of alcohol.
I was totally one of those people that didn't drink until turning 21 😳 probably the reason I still go hard sometimes when I do drink.
