**OFFICIAL** TMDSAS Questions & Answers

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have completed my personal statement for AMCAS, and I wa wondering if people were using the same one for Texas app. I am not sure my PS answers their questions about my medical philosophies and goals relavent to the career. Any advice would be apreciated. 😀

Is there any way to print the entire app before sending it. I tryied prints each page at a time, but at this rate it will take forever.

yes. when you finish filling out everything, there should be an option at the end that lets you check over and print before submitting.

hey,

on the TMDSAS, they ask you what all other med schools ur applying to? At this point, i don't know if i'll apply through AMCAS so what should I put in that slot. Also, will they hold me accountable if i don't put schools here and then apply to schools, or vice versa?

i dont think it's a big deal if you dont know all of them for sure, or if you will at all. im sure a lot of people fill out TMDSAS before AMCAS and so may not have made up their minds yet. i put down some schools that i didnt end up following through with. i dont think you need to worry too much about being held accountable... it's probably more as a general information thing for them.

I have done everything but the Cert. page. Will I get the option to print entire application after I complete this page?

Hey all,

I just had a quick, possibly stupid question for anyone willing to help! I haven't got a premed advisory committee, so for the LOR's I'm going to have to have them sent individually. Now for TMDSAS we can only send 2, right? That's all they let us fill out on the application. I wanted to send in a couple more but don't know if that would sit well with the TMDSAS people. I'm just having a hard time deciding which of the people i want to have send the LOR. Did anybody send in more initially? Or did you wait until AFTER your interview and sent in others to show interest in the school?

Thanks and I appreciate you helping me out!

hi liverpool,

tmdsas will only forward 2 letters to the schools. if you want to send additional letters, you must have them sent directly to the schools (not to tmdsas). but from what i can remember, some if the schools specifically say on their website that they discourage this (ut houston comes to mind, but i can't remember for sure). i also did not go the premed advisory com. route. i would just pick what you think are your 2 best letters and send them to tmdsas. good luck,

ghost

You can't. AMCAS gives you more space than TMDSAS, so I would do TMDSAS first and just paste it into AMCAS. (unless you can add more pertinent info that you had to omit for TMDSAS) There is nothing wrong with a succinct, concise essay that gets the point across, even if you don't take up all the space provided in AMCAS. It is probably better to try real hard just once, and use that same essay for both apps.

I did my TMDSAS one first, after ALOT of revisions, since they have such a tiny limit (limit 62 lines) and pasted it into the AMCAS app, which calculated my essay to be about 4600 characters (5000 characters or so is the limit I think?).

The questions are also a little different for the personal statement in each app service, so watch out for that too!

Good luck!

GHOST,

thanks a tonne for your help...that's what i figured. I haven't seen any of my LORs so I;m just going to have to go with my gut on who would have written the best.

thanks again and good luck!

Hi All, I probably should've asked this earlier, but I was wondering..

If you retake classes to improve your science gpa does tmdsas count the first grade you received even if the new grade replaces the old one?? 😕

I may be wrong on this: I think I remember my friend who did this last year saying every grade getrs computed, even retakes. Her GPA ended up somewhat lower than say, what would have counted for University standards. If that's true, I may be a little screwed. 😱
But I don't know this for sure. Anybody else? 😕

UNT is right. Every class, even re-takes will be counted towards your GPA. So assuming you got an F your first time, and an A the second time, you will have a C for the class. Sucks, I know.

this is not looking good kids 🙁

Question: In the personal biography section they ask for jobs held during freshmen, soph, jr. sr. year, etc. I plan on working my senior year, so do I put that or leave it blank since I haven't started my sr. yr? Just curious?

If you have everything planned I can't see why you couldn't list a job for the fall. As long as you get the dates right. I am starting summer research in July and I will be listing that.

Any TX reapplicants out there??

Question - They received all my stuff by 5/21 ($, transcripts, pictures, letters, etc). Does anyone know how long it takes to be sent to schools?

when is the texas "match" day?

And, could we potentially add updates to our app until that day?

The TMDSAS match day is Feb 1. At least that's what it was last year. I can't believe this info wouldn't be on the TMDSAS website. The second part of your question: depending on the school, you can keep sending updates to your application. I know San Antonio and Southwestern both encouarage it as it shows interest, whereas UT-H has a general policy about not looking at anything outside your formal TMDSAS application (so additional LORs, LOIs, and updates are effectively tossed when they are received).

Last year took two to three weeks. The first bunch will go soon, probably in a week or two if my memory serves me correctly.

The length of the personal essay is "Limited to 62 lines and 80 characters per line." Does this mean that the maximum is 4960 characters or 62 lines? (To my knowledge, TMDSAS doesn't have any kind of character count like AMCAS) I'm asking because many lines won't be exactly 80 characters, so is it acceptable if you have over 62 lines but are still under 4960 characters?

-Nevermind, it's 62 lines, just tried to save it and it gave an error message :>

All of my documents have been received by TMDSAS, but for some reason my
transcipts and course work are not complete. The don't say "C" complete. I sent them an emial, and they said "Please just be patient. We haven't completed the processing yet on your file." Is anyone else having a problem with this? Should I call?

Don't call them until you get that letter in the mail with the applicant profile sheet indicating they are done processing and trasmitted your app to the schools. They put this in ALL CAPS when I emailed about it!

-tx

Does anybody know what actually happens during the "processing" of our apps?

Do they just check our grades and residency status?

I forgot to put my future classes and they called me with two options to fix it:
1) they could reopen it and I could edit it on the web
2) I could just email the changes to them and they would do it.

I did the second and it worked out fine.

damn i didnt write my future classes either, where does that go, along with the list of classes youve taken?

hey guys, is anyone going through the HPAC at UTD? WHAT'S TAKING THEM SO LONG? I interviewed a month ago and Dr. Wood still hasn't even begun to write the composite letters.... better yet, he'll be out of office (vacation) next week! Does TMDSAS process app's if everything is received EXCEPT for the committee letteR?

Does this delay your application from being transmitted to the schools? That is, are you now "farther in line" because changes were made to your application?

Hello fellow Carrollton person. Yes, just list them like any other class, but for grade you indicate "NY", as in you have not taken the class yet.

alrite guys, jus makin a quick checklist, please let me know if I am missing anything

1)Submit TMDSAS electronically
2)Submit transcripts from all schools
3)Ask prehealth committee to submit their letter
4)All together -
a) photo(pin# and name on each) for each school you are applying to
b) money order(pin# and name printed somewhere)
c) signature page

I'm not sure. Here are my dates:
Date Submitted: 5/21/2004
Initial Processing Date - sent to schools(s): 6/23/2004

I applied to Dallas and San Antonio and have already sent in my secondaries. We'll see what happens now!

Anyone know if it is possible to insert line breaks between paragraphs? I know for the AMCAS application it's just two carriage returns, but it doesn't seem to work that way for TMDSAS. By the way, I think you need to look at the formatted/printable version to tell if there are line breaks in the final draft. The area to type in your essay doesn't seem representative of the formatted version the adcoms will see. Thanks.

A photo for each school PLUS a photo for TMDSAS. I'm sure you know this, just making sure!

You can, but it counts against your 62 line limit. I think you should utilize the space with words and not empty lines. But if you are very concise and succinct in your essay so that you don't need 62 lines, more power to ya!

You were in the first batch. So I guess making changes doesn't set you back in the process. Thanks!

Hey guys,

On the UTSW secondary, what kinds of courses did you list? I know it states to only list courses that fulfill the requirements, but I was just wondering what kind of courses you listed.

-tx

I submitted a few days ago and mailed my secondaries, TMDSAS fee/pictures/cert page today. Am i still considered and "early" applicant with all the yummy benefits of being early (easier to get in, hahah)

I don't know if I know enough to say this, but I think a july application is still considered early especially if you submitted your secondaries as well. This is considering June 1 as the earliest and November 1 as the last possible date. Even though I believe you can still submit after November 1, the schools just might not look at it.

Quick question, do medical schools see your updated GPA when they view your application? Or do they only see your GPA at the time you applied?

Definitely....they don't convene to review applications until around mid-July anyway.

Yea..I was wondering the same thing cuz I have more than enough biology courses to choose from, and I am seriously considering conveniently inputting only the ones with the best grades. Am I allowed to do this?

When I did it last year, I put the classes I enjoyed the most and also the ones from which I had a LOR. Good luck to you all! If I remember correctly the first batch of interviews come around mid-July and later. I didn't get my Southwestern interview invite until mid-August and it was the first one. If I remember correctly the invites came like (I applied to all the TMDSAS schools):

TCOM (mid-July) *phone
UT-Houston (mid-July) *I think by email, but am not positive
A&M (late July) *email
UT-San Antonio (Late July/First August) *Mail
UT-MB (Late July/First August) *Mail
Texas Tech (Mid August) *Email
UTSW (Mid August) *Mail

Last summer I checked my mail constantly, good luck to you all, I really enjoyed the Texas system and all the students I interviewed with were great and friendly. I made friends on interviews that I noticed will be in my class next year!

When should have all our secondaries in by? When do the begin looking at applications?

Thanks!
