Just to clarify...they don't "make" us go to the interviews, we just like to if we have the chance! The classes (1st year/2nd year etc) are very close and there is a lot of interaction between them(parties, activities, TA's, etc), so we all like to get an idea of who our future little sibs will be (2nd years get assigned or pick an incoming freshman med student to "mentor") Although we don't "officially" have any say in who does or doesn't get in, I can promise you that if you impress the current students during the lunch it can only help you...UF is really big on student input (that also holds true if you make an a$$ of yourself..watch out!)
The first week of class will almost seem like one big party to you guys...and you'll be exhausted if we can pull it off the way our 2nd years did for us!! 😀 😀

wow, I had no idea that those students had any input at all if we got in. That's kind of misleading to interviewees--I think we are told that they are not on the admissions committee and ask them whatever we want. Now it's not like I said anything stupid to them, but I didn't know they had any input at all. Cobragirl, go tell them to let me in! <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" />

Then again, I understand that we are expected to be on our best behavior, even when staying with student hosts.

Oh, and I don't know if I'm the one who said "make the students talk to interviewees" but if I did, I'm sorry. I know they are volunteers and that's why I was so impressed witht he students at UF. Their students are much more friendly than at other schools I've visited. Geez, I even had pharmacy students tell me how great UF is!

Please let me in UF!! I sound like the PelicanMan with Pritzker here!

Can you confirm Joehuf's statement that UF has sent letters to all applicants, including everyone who has been put on hold?? My permanent address is Miami, and my parents still haven't received a letter from UF. Thanks.
 
I think I'm going to email my student host with questions. Do you guys have any questions you want me to ask her? She's really nice and knows a lot about the admissions process.

I'm going to ask her about what joehuf said. I doubt they have notified all interviewees by now!

Just got mail from UF yesterday(Sat). I've been placed on the alternate list. Also, the letter states that the class has been filled. I guess this makes my decision to go to USF a bit easier.

Sorry 2NT 🙁 . You seemed pretty happy with USF, though. I wonder if you get pulled off the wait list to UF, what would you do?

Also, when was your letter dated? (So I know when to expect mine). My guess is that everyone who has been accepted already knows, and they have prolly just sent out all the alternate list letters. 🙁 🙁 🙁 <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="frown.gif" />

My letter was dated April 5th.

You are right. I'm pretty happy with going to USF. It was the thought of not having to go through the trouble of moving that made me second-guess my decision to go to USF.

Actually, the letter states that I was recommended for the alternate list and I need to let them know in writing if I want to be on the alternate list. I'm going to withdraw my application though, as I have already went through the alternate list process with them the first time I applied(sent them numerous updates,waiting..waiting,etc.) and I really don't want to go through that again. I would rather attend a school that really liked me and accepted me right after my interview(right Bubba Swamp?).

I do hope you receive good news from UF as I know how much you really love the school now. Good luck with Temple and enjoy your trip visiting your family there 🙂

The UF situation sucks, but I think you have the right attitude. I was VERY pleased with both Tampa and USF after having interviewed. It's a short move! Don't fret! I have to move to Mobile, which is what...3 times the distance you have to move!?! 😀

So, are you finished with the app process? What a relief, eh? 🙂
 
I'm actually really afraid to check my mailbox now. Some SDNers got letters of acceptance dated March 21st, after I interviewed. I bet that was the last round of acceptances (b/c it was prior to 3/29), and everything now will just be wait list or rejection.

Last year they pulled about 40 people off of their wait list, so I guess there's still hope.

I'm sad and worried 🙁 Better to expect it though. Good thing there's SDN to break the news gently 🙁

p.s. Can someone please go on monday to see if I'm up there on the board? Last time they sent me mail it took over a week to get to me. <img border="0" alt="[Pity]" title="" src="graemlins/pity.gif" />

Here's what I've learned about UF:

If you email Robyn and she responds, you're in the clear.

If you email Robyn and she blows you off, things aren't looking good.

She was really nice about responding to my email inqueries. She later stopped responding very abruptly. My rejection letter soon followed.

Why don't you send her an email?

I'd go check the board (it's very close to my apt) but I've got a communistic P Chem exam on Monday. I'm gonna be pulling an all nighter tomorrow, and will be working right after my exam. I then have to go get a hair cut before coming home and collapsing. Maybe Tuesday, though...
 
I'm way too scared to send her an email and risk speeding up the process too much. I don't really have any reason to email her anyway. I only interviewed 3 weeks ago, so I have to be patient as far as she can tell. I don't want to be too pushy <img border="0" alt="[Pity]" title="" src="graemlins/pity.gif" />
 
If I haven't heard anything yet does that mean that I am rejected. I interviewed on September 28th. Actually I will bet that I have been waiting the longest out of anyone for a response from a medical school. Almost a whole year. Damn I though I would at least be waitlisted. That really sucks. Wake Forrest here I come.

Maybe they are just notifying the last batch of interviewees of their status, since we were never placed on hold.

2NT-you have posted the most valuable information on UF that I have seen in a while. Since my permanent address is Miami, I suppose that I'll get the letter tomorrow or tuesday.

I guess the real question is whether or not UF mailed the last batch of acceptances before they sent out the alternate list/rejections.

According to Bubba Swamp's logic, I'm in decent shape (acceptance/waitlist), because I had been in email correspondance with Robyn in recent days. But...I'm not getting my hopes up. Anyways, go 'Canes !!!!

Foxy, don't worry...like I said, we have no "official" roll in the admissions process, but you can understand how an interviewee that gets all the current students excited (wow, that person is REALLY cool/nice/smart/exciting/whatever) and the staff hears about it, it can only boost their odds of getting in. We don't ever actually approach admissions staff and give info that we've gained from the interviewees (so they didn't mislead you!)...unless someone was WAY out of line or something (being rude/obnoxious/whatever). Nobody wants a future classmate that is a jerk and probably a total gunner to boot (since those types are usually nice as pie to the interviewers). Don't worry...if you were genuinly nice to the students and fellow interviewees, you only HELPED your chances at getting in!!!! 😀 I'm sure the same holds true at ANY school you apply to!
 
Anyone who's been accepted at one of the big FL schools (UF, USF, or UM)... I need some advice.

What were your stats? I am concerned that I may be not up to expectations mainly because I don't have any research experience. Is it absolutely necessary 100% to have some sort of research experience when applying to med school? Here are my stats:

&#8729; 3.8 GPA - 3.6 Science GPA - Major is not traditional, since it is in Computer Science from an high ranking school (for CS), which is UCF.
&#8729; All the volunteer stuff (at a hospital in ER dept), volunteer at Big Brother/Sis, Job shadowing, was part-time employed during my first 3 years of Bachelors (not in the medical field though), and members in CS Honor Society, Golden Key Webmaster (officer position)
&#8729; Have not taken the MCAT yet, but getting around a 32/33 on practice MCATs (11/12 Verbal, 10 PS, 9/10 BS)

What do you think? What's my chances at USF (that's my FIRST choice). Please advise!! Thanks
 
sairules - Hey there, good to see a fellow Golden Knight on the message board. I think I can be of some help in answering your questions b/c I will be going to USFCOM.

Don't worry about research for USF, but clinical experience is essential. Your GPA seems inline with what they expect (hopefully you have taken a good load of science courses) and your MCAT looks like it will be fine. The only thing I would strongly advice you to do is to apply through the pre-health professions office. I'm almost sure that USF as well as many other schools expect to see the composite packet. Are you familiar with this?? Any specific questions you want to ask? feel free to PM me.

What exactly defines "clinical experience"? Is it patient contact in a health related setting, like volunteering at a hospital? What were your other stats?
 
Only do research if you are interested in it. It is severely overrated in one's attempt to gain admission into medical school, especially for the florida schools. Also there are a couple of students from UCF that are in our class. From what I understand UF and UM are not too kind to UCF students, so maybe having USF as your #1 choice will be in your advantage.
 
How can you base an application solely on where you did your undergrad? Come on -- that must totally be a rumor. Besides, it depends what the applicant's major was. I understand UCF is not great in many majors, but for CS, it tops UF anyday. Everyone knows that UCF is tops for CS, especially among state schools. Heck... UCF even beat Georgia Tech at the programming team finals. (I was accepted at GT out of high school and decided to stay local instead to take advantage of a scholarship to UCF).

Just trying to say that it depends on what your major was also!
 
well, it will depend on your mcat actually. your major don't count for nithong when you apply, IMHO.
hopefully you're rocking your classes and will get a 30 on the mcat. if you do..how can anybody in Florida (or many schools outside florida) deny you??

Luke, i imagine you also got into a lot of better schools like Emory (those people!!) that take southern boys seriously. could you break down a list of where you got in and where you interviewed? I just want to see how much people (esp outside florida) trust Jacksonville University. bec if you'd had those scores coming out of UMiami (even), you'd have gotten interviews at a few top 20s and some 10s, from what i've seen.

I just called UF and Denise said that all applications are supposed to get back to the committee by April 15, and if I haven't heard from them a week after that to call back. Hope this helps everyone who is waiting.

No prob...it's the least I can do after all the MCAT stress we went through together 🙂 .

Oh, she also said they usually send letters to our school addresses, they were just sending them to home addresses because they figured people would be gone for Spring Break.

Thanks Papi, that was really sweet. I got my letter from UF yesterday, and I'm on the alternate list. 🙁 The letter was dated April 5th, just like 2NT. I really wonder if anyone from my interview day got accepted--I think it was just a tease. It was sent to my campus address if anyone is wondering.

Still nothing on my end. I think all final letters are going out this week. The question is whether or not UF is going to be mailing any acceptances this week. My guess is that they are.
 
I don't think they will be sending out more acceptances any time soon. 🙁 The alternate list letetr said on the very first line that the class is full. 🙁 🙄
