OHIO STATE class of 2014!

Can I be on my father's insurance and still gain residency?

If I can be on his insurance do I have to prove that I'm sending him money to pay for it?

Thanks! 🙂

6 weeks until Columbus!!!! 🙂 Sooo Excited!!!

I have emailed the stupid residency office about this FOUR TIMES in the past 4 weeks about this exact question. Only crickets have responded. I plan on calling on Tues or Wed (when I don't have work), so I will let you know when I call, but if you find out before me let me know!

I *think* as long as you aren't receiving any actual $$ you should be ok...but I would call the residency office just to check. (Don't call the vet school directly, because they will just send you to the residency people...[been there!]).

@lalzi: are you in the c/o 2014 Facebook group? I didn't see you in the SDN discission...

As a side note, first day of classes is exactly two months from today. Who is getting FREAKING EXCITED?!?! 😀😀😀

ME!!! I'M EXCITED!!!

Back to the insurance...I called yesterday and was informed that you can be on your parents insurance as long as you prove that you have the funds to pay for it yourself

So does that mean giving our parents money? Or does that mean just taking out the loan for insurance..or...? Do you know or should I call them again to clarify (they didnt pick up when I called/was on hold for 1 1/2 hours and then I had to go)

Oh, and yea, I'm in the FB group. You'll figure out who I am. How many New York girls can there be?

what it means is that when you're filling out the residency application, you still will list some amount of insurance money under that spot. for example, i was still on a phone plan my parents were paying for, but i just had to prove that i could pay for my phone. so, under the 'phone' line on the application i filled in $480 for the year ($40 a month *12 months).

my total 'income' still covered that amount, so all was good.

there is no actual exchange of money involved.

So you will just need to make sure you have an extra unspent $2200 in your budget for what a year of insurance would have cost you otherwise.

Current students: Which insurance plan do you guys recommend?

Depends on what your options are, if your male or female, and if you already have your rabies vaccines or not.

Student health insurance does come with $100 in prescription eyewear coverage for classes/contacts.

Well I meant from the two student health insurance plans, not any old insurance. I already had the rabies so I don't need that, just a good student plan.

OSU only offers one student plan. Is the second one your talking about AVMA GHLIT?

I honestly have no idea. I gave the insurance link to my moms company insurer to look over so they could help choose the best one for me, and they wanted to know which one students chose more often, so I assumed there was more than one option. Maybe they are looking at something not for us? I don't know, but thanks for letting me know there is only 1 option. Also, do you know if the coverage includes the summer months we are not in school?

I already took care of my insurance on buckeye link and it shows that I will be covered from 9/14/10-9/13/11 so Yes, it covers the summer months you just have to "renew" it every year

Thats the term for the coverage, but it doesn't automatically cover the summer. You will have to opt in for the summer some time before June and pay cash for it then (~$540). The other 3 quarters it will be covered by your loan money.

your parents might have seen this page:

http://www.shi.osu.edu/page.asp?id=7&section=6

which lists three 'options'....but really, there is only one student health plan, and then two other options that involve your own separate health insurance outside of osu.
osu has this 'wilcecare supplemental' insurance that you can opt into IN ADDITION to an outside osu insurance plan, and what this one does is basically give you more/better coverage at the student health center on camps (wilce).

Hi Everyone,
I was wondering if anyone was looking for a roommate for the next year. Or if anyone knew if apartments were still available, or even where I should look or avoid. I just received a phone call that they have a seat available for me! and now my head is spinning with all the stuff I need to figure out! But i'm sooooo excited. I know I haven't posted here much, I kinda stopped looking at the site after this cycle of applications, but I would really appreciate any information you guys could give met.
THANKS SO MUCH

Congrats on getting in!!

The best place to look for a room is in the northwest Columbus area - specifically the upper Arlington area around Kenny Rd and Henderson rd. There is a fb group, so you could always post for roommates there, or join cvm chat, or post on OSU's website. (You should be getting emails shortly, explaining cvm chat)

If we are able to stay on our parents' insurance plan, can we do so and still qualify for residency, provided that we show we can pay for the costs? Or do we actually have to switch to our own insurance plan?

I feel like there's all this stuff I'm supposed to be doing to prepare that I don't know about!

yep, you can stay on your parents' insurance and still qualify for residency as long as you show that you COULD pay for your own, no need to switch...i definitely would stay on your parents' if possible since it would probably be cheaper.

don't stress out too much about stuff you need to do for residency. a good thing to do just to make you feel a little better and start being semi-prepared is to stop by the residency office when you get to campus/are in the area and pick up the 'residency application'. it will show you just what exactly you do need to be thinking about in terms of finances and some steps you definitely should take (eg. registering to vote, ohio driver's license etc.)

Hi! So my bf proposed this weekend !!!!!!! 😍 So excited!!! So I just wanted to clarify the residency thing. We're thinking about so a little secret marriage so I can save money by becoming a resident. Then having a big wedding sometime next year and no one will be the wiser 🙂 Any way, as long as his income is Ohio income do i instantly become a resident as long as I am married to him and he is employed?

Another question: I have already accepted my non-resident loans in the sum of $81,000+...if we did get married and I became a resident for the 2nd and 3rd quarter, would financial aid take away the extra loan money or would it just stay in my account with the option to give it back or keep it? I'm wondering because if i get to keep it we would like to use that as wedding money and then just use any extra to take out less loans the following year.

Thanks for your help.

You would need to file some paperwork and submit some paystubs from the new hubbys job. And they do take the loan money away if you get the in-state rates.

I'm sure a few of the older(!) married people in my class can chime in with more details on the instant residency process.

Dave: Older eh? 🙄 Not cool.

jmcgintee: Congrats on getting engaged! 😀

I have been paying in-state tuition since first quarter so it is a pretty sweet deal. This is what I had to submit to the registrars office.

- Letter from husbands employer confirming full time employment and salary
- copy of marriage license
- proof of domicile (such as rental agreement for apartment)
-last three paystubs from husband's job
- copies of Ohio driver's license and car registration for both of us

They will take paperwork up until the first Friday after classes start, so there is still potentially time to get
residency for this quarter. Search for "C-3 residency" on the OSU website and it tells you everything. You can also email your super awesome Big Sib 😉 if you have any questions.

anyone else getting antsy for them to at least post our schedule for the fall?

especially with pretty much every other school about to start classes..

(and i know there are previous years' schedules to look at...but it's just not the same)

YES! I'm getting so antsy. Everyone here is talking about already having moved and unpacked and going through orientation. We don't start for OVER a month. Stupid quarter system. Whatever, longer summer at least.

Yeah, I think once Buckeye Link says I'm actually REGISTERED for classes, I'll start to feel like this is really happening. Until then, it's like, "Oh, I'm moving in three weeks? Oh, I start vet school in a month? Pssh, yeah, ok."

If the past is any indication, that fall schedule won't be posted for about another month. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

I understand though. I remember last year in August everyone on SDN was like "We've all started vet school:banana:!!!" I was thinking, "I haven't started vet school...🙁"

Patience, guys. It will be here before you know it. This year, school can take its sweet time getting here as far as I'm concerned.

Our schedule has been posted on our accounts on buckeyelink!! I just noticed this today 🙂 . Anyone else a little nervous now that you actually see what we are taking?

Also, does anyone have a clue when we pick up our orders that we made through OVESS????

Ahhhh :scared: Still over a month away tho hahaha

well at least that's SOME progress...

but i want them to post/send out the real, day-to-day schedule..

There is time during orientation to pick up your stuff. However, OVESS will send out emails before school starts letting you know dates/ times you can pick it up early. Which I recommend, since during orientation you will wait in line for quite a while.

👍👍👍 Summer's going by waaaayyy too quickly

Anyone know if/how we can get parking passes for campus?

So I just got some of my anatomy books from Amazon today. Now that they are in my hands I've realized that I am not as ready for school to start as I thought. I cannot wait to meet everyone but actually learning all this stuff is quite overwhelming.

I made the switch to pursuing a vet med education pretty late into college (end of my sophomore yr, was pre-med). I was wondering if there were any other ppl in our class who haven't studied anatomy yet? I am so nervous! I feel like I am way behind in this regard or maybe as school is nearing I am starting to freak out! haha 😀

I have not studied anatomy for one second. Nothing. Too late to change it now, so might as well not worry. See you SO SOON!!!!

Yeah I wouldn't worry about it. I've never studied anatomy either, and from what I've heard, a lot to most students haven't had an anatomy course either.

Has anyone looked at anything on our carmen site that our anatomy teacher emailed us about a couple days ago?

Also, is anyone planning on going to the winking lizard thing thurs that a couple of our classmates emailed about?

So excited/nervous for school to start ahh😛

Is anyone doing work study this quarter? I'd love the extra money, but I'm nervous about committing to a job that might interfere with studying. I know they tend to work around your schedule, and it's usually fairly low hours, but I'm just concerned.

Yay for the first day of orientation! It was great starting to get to meet everyone! See you guys Sunday!!!
