Oklahoma C/O 2025 Hopefuls

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I could find the recent class size I was just wondering what it was before they changed it cause I couldn’t find that. Even the article I found explaining the change didn’t even give numbers lol
Here is the official magazine that comes out yearly for perusing for fun if you feel like it! Covers major players/events for those years, including the comprising numbers/stats of that years incoming class. I used to look at them and still get them from being alumni. 😀

Are there any current students that could talk about opportunities for wildlife medicine, conservation, exotics, environmental medicine, the works? I am between two schools right now and am focusing on this topic as my deciding factor since virtually all other factors are neck and neck

We have excellent clinicians for that with the rotation and club known as ZEW, for zoo, exotics and wildlife. Jim Lish is a cool professor to look up and chat with as well. He helped with eagle rescues yearly and has great stories.

I took that rotation twice because I learned so much each time.

Hi! OSU is one of my top choice schools so I am wondering if any current students can tell me about the living situation/cost/etc. I have a dog and a cat and would ideally like to rent a house by myself. I am from Florida so I have no clue if there is anything around the campus that makes this possible but this is a big thing that will help me make my decision in choosing a school.

I’m a current undergrad but I can speak on housing situation. Stillwater has so many options. The housing around campus alone is pretty extensive as well as Stillwater itself. The town doesn’t feel too tiny but no where is really too far from the vet college (which is on the main campus). A 2 bedroom 1 bathroom can run you anywhere from 500-1000 here depending on location and the state it’s in. Many of these houses are rental properties that haven’t been touched in 30 years so a lot of them are outdated but cheap gets the job done for grad school I’d say. I have never felt unsafe in any area of Stillwater and I have lived in 3 different locations during my undergrad. I’d say Facebook market place and Zillow would give you a good idea of what you’re looking at + houses are being listed everyday as were in that point in the semester where everyone is making plans for next year. I plan to rent a house alone next year as well, should I get accepted this cycle!

I lived in a 2bed 1 bath with large fenced yard and garage for ~$800 I think. Many people have their own house and lots of animal friendly landlords especially with a vet school. There are more expensive houses walking distance to school as well as the entire neighborhood behind McElroy hall is housing. I was only about 1 mile from school, so took me 3-4 minutes drive time, which was good, because I sucked at getting to class anyway. haha
COL is definitely a draw to OKState in my opinion.

Does anyone know about how long it typically takes IS students to hear back after the interview? Just feeling anxious!

Unless it has changed, you find out when everyone finds out last week Feb-First of March. They have always sent all invites waitlists and no go's at the same time. Waitlist is usually not a bad thing for instate either though as they used to put a good number that were likely to be accepted as waitlist until finial grades were in. 🙂

Is it likely to be on the waitlist but already be graduated? Or do they normally only base waitlist based on spring grades?

I don’t think so, at least I haven’t gotten one since my acceptance email. Does anyone know if there’s a Facebook group for the class of 2025?
Historically people are added to or can join a fb group started by the school after the April 15 deadline. There is usually info about it in the welcome packets they send full of info. They used to send out paper acceptance packets years ago, but I think they just do email now. Someone with more recent knowledge can correct me if I’m wrong...it’s been literally ten years since I got my letter. Not sure how I got so old. If it is just email I’m a little sad you all don’t get to speculate about the meanings of an envelope with a sticker or those without...

Yeah I got an email only packet with all the information! We were accepted via email and then at a later point received another email with the packet and the FB group

Can any students currently at Oklahoma talk about the program and what they feel about it (positive & negative)? I am interested in large animal medicine and in theriogenology! I have heard about the ranch that OSU has that is dedicated to theriogenology, and if anyone knows anything else on that I would love to hear about it!

I saw something on that about an issue with freshman retention rate... does that refer to students failing out? Could someone speak more on that?
It was historically due to 3 tough professors for first year, but 2 are no longer there, so likely better. I will say as well it tended to be more in state as there were more slots there and people are usually a little higher on academic side OOS. Plenty of life stuff though as well with the bigger class size from my time.

I enjoyed my time there. LA and therio is certainly a strong suit for OKState.

Negatives were really just Oklahoma related. It depends on what you think is a positive vs negative. It is a small town, so if you are a city person, you may not like that. But really, vet school is about vet school. Everyone thinking they need this or that doesn't make sense to me as time flies and you're generally too busy anyway. It should be about proximity to family and finances and that is it imo. 🙂

As far as school gripes, every school has stuff that is annoying and you think people are incompetent with communication. You won't find a single school thread without a rant here and there from students. haha

Thanks for the info! I am curious about any clubs or opportunities to work with indigenous peoples or reservations? I know some vet schools have shelter med programs partnered with reservations. Also any links to clubs/pages would be amazing!

Good luck to everyone this week! Unfortunately I was not one of the lucky ones but I hope everyone in this thread gets amazing news this week. ❤️

Any IS accepted want to share stats? If there are any on here. I’m just so confused and so are the people who know my application.
I am too. I was well, well above average in all categories and the rejection email basically stated I only met minimum so I would love if any accepted IS people would like to share.

Wait so waitlist position varied by pending grades?

I see you had posted your WAMC. After looking, you were average in your application and the one thing I see is you are missing things related to out side vet med life experience. Not having extra curricular activities is usually a hit. I would see about expanding that aspect and finding ways to relate that into vet med. If applying again, definitely have people read over your essays as well to look for ways to stand out. I am sorry you didn't get in this go round, but if you are determined, that is at least my advice moving forward. :cat:

No sure about indigenous work, but lots of spay neuter with the local feral cat chapter done through shelter medicine folks. Lots of the usual clubs and things. I'd have to look to see if they are all listed somewhere. They are as active as the students running them, so really that depends on the student body and how active they are, which can vary year by year.

If on the academic bubble, last semester grades can boost that, or at least make sure if you have a few outstanding pre reqs that you pass them. haha
I’m not in school anymore so I’m confused on how the waitlist works. It says they re rank after receiving grades but am I just mixed in there with the students even though I don’t have more grades to offer?

I’m also confused, I reached out to the school and was told that waitlist rankings were subject to change based on spring performance. I have also graduated so my performance is not subject to change. Fingers crossed though!

Did they say anything else? So we are ranked in with the students and won’t find anything out until spring grades go through?

The instate waitlist doesn’t move until after spring grades are in for everyone, just like they told you. It’s usually into early to mid May before you hear anything since the semester doesn’t end until like the first week of May. They’ll reevaluate your app in light of everyone else’s on the list. If someone they have above you on the tentative list continues to do well, maybe they stay above you on the final waitlist. If another applicant they thought was pretty close to you didn’t do quite as hot in the spring, maybe they get bumped down below you. If you’ve already graduated and don’t have spring grades pending, then nothing to worry about or do. Just wait.

Nothing of note, the sender just expressed that they were excited for me. Which is awesome but I don’t want false hope lol, I’ve all but resigned myself to being rejected!

yup. There are many factors that go into filling a class, so if you have no more grades, they are waiting to see what happens with acceptances, declines, and what holes they need to fill for a complete class with diversity in mind as well.

Would anyone be willing to offer advice on what to improve for next years cycle if I do not get moved off of the waitlist?

Will we receive financial aid/loan packages at some point? And if so when? Or do I have to request one?

Accepted my OOS seat yesterday. Is there a Facebook group for the class or do I have to be invited?

they'll send you the invite when you send deposit I believe. 🙂
Thank you. I received the confirmation email this morning but still waiting for the next email with additional information.

Does anyone know if Oklahoma has a dress code? I am wanting to dye my hair and wanted to know about possible restrictions before I invest, lol!

Hello everyone! I was accepted to Ok State Vet school and Mizzou also so I have a decision to make!

I was wondering if there was anyone that can give me some insight for OK State CVM? Things like...
1. How early on does hands-on learning start?
2. How are the faculty/staff? Are they mostly approachable?
3. How is the environment there between students and peers and students and faculty? (friendly, competitive, open, etc.)
4. What is faculty availability like for one-on-one help?
5. If there was one thing you would have wanted to know before deciding on OK State, what would that be?
6. What is one major pro + con about OK State or the city of Stillwater that's important to know?

Thank you in advance!!! 🙂

Can I ask why you’d attend Ok state over Mizzou? Isn’t Mizzou considerably cheaper (like $50,000) due to the ability to gain residency?

Yes of course! I am also considering Iowa which is also pricier (Mizzou is the most financially stable option) but I am personally looking to specialize in the future and I want to weigh out the pros and cons of the curriculums at each school. I know vet school isn't important when it comes down to applying for internship etc. but I want to get the most hands-on experience that I can. For me, one-on-one interaction with professors with extra learning/help on the side really helps me succeed also so that is super important to me. Also, I will be moving on my own so things like safety and environment is something I really value also.

I know everyone says choose the cheaper school- its the same education. Personally, I want to go to a school that is right for me in terms of education- which school will help me gain the most out of the money, time, and effort I put in. Plus, if I end up applying for internship right out of vet school making connections with attendings in specific rotations can really help strengthen my application as well. Basically, I'm trying to find the right program that will help me succeed the way it works for me especially since grades and GPA are super important if I do decide to continue my education.

Everywhere is going to offer hands on if you seek it out. Go to the cheapest option. 🙂
