OSU-COM Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
While this is a partially true statement, the faculty at your chosen institution will have a HUGE variance on both your education and connections down the road. For instance;
You can do a residency/rotation in pretty much any major hospital in the country coming from OSU – Com. The reason? Poppie. (Dr. Goljan) Face it, DO schools still face a lot of punishment from “high end” allopathic institutions. Our students have a great opportunity to practice at those places due to the education you SHOULD have gotten from OSU. Like you said though, the student makes the ultimate difference. We just had a student (now a 3rd year) get a perfect Comlex score, followed by a near perfect USMLE score. He’s a GREAT student, but also a student that absorbs everything Poppie has to teach. Respect and reputation help a lot when it comes to residencies/location. I know this sounds like a gospel to Poppie due to his acclaim, but the other professors do a standup job as well in preparing us for our futures as physicians. One of my favorite t-shirts to wear to the gym says “ Self Taught Doctor”. I picked it up in undergrad, but it does have meaning in medical school. The professors put the information in front of you, but with the vast amounts of info it’s up to YOU to ultimately learn the material. Most medical schools are pretty equal, but there are differences. Tour as many as you can, you'll probably pick up on them.

Was wondering if you know his MCAT score? I figure MCAT probably isn't brought up that much in medical school. Just wondering with all the speculation about the correlation between MCAT and Board scores.

I don't know his MCAT, just like I don't know the MCAT score of anyone in my class, let alone another one. The MCAT is an obstacle that you have to clear in order to get in. After you jump that hurdle, its gone and you've moved past it. I understand what you are saying about boards, but the only real correlation is the fact that they are both standardized tests.

I assumed there was little talk about mcat after entrance, I personally don't buy into the theory on sdn that a high mcat equates to potentially a high board score.

Getting certain scores correlates with likelihood to pass boards, but there isn't good correlation of MCAT score to COMLEX or USMLE score from what I've seen.

Yes, any DO or MD schools. Professional could also be interpreted at being Dental or Law too, but I doubt your applying to those.

Does that mean what schools you are COMPLETING the apps to (sending secondaries), or all schools where you sent primaries?

Just call and ask. I thought it was straight forward but obviously your situation is complicated.

Any news anyone?

Any current medical students willing to be our "mole" and gives us an inside track? The waiting is driving me NUTS.

To abflexer3000: I take the viewpoint as if you completed an application. At most schools that requires a secondary. Now if it is a school that screens for secondaries, i.e. requests a secondary only after passing a "first round", then you completed the application. Basically "I think" OSU wants to know all the schools you interested in. If you sent a primary but never completed the application by not sending a secondary (for instance changing your mind), then I don't see that as being relevant.

I just listed all the schools to which I submitted my primary application and left it at that.

Spoke to Sara Q today, I was told its going to be atleast 1-2 more weeks before phone calls go out.... Sigh...

BTW, Anyone considering the dual degree option, DO/MS; DO/PhD; DO/MBA, feel free to PM me with any questions (I know little to nothing about the DO/MBA...aside from layout of the curric.)

Oh man... I am so glad you checked it out. I submitted all of my secondaries in the last few weeks and have already gotten three interviews. I literally live across the street from OSU-COM, so I would feel like such a failure if I didn't get an interview!

Man... this is fun!

Hi. I applied to OSU a couple of weeks ago so my AACOMAS application hasn't been verrified yet. I haven't heard from any of my AACOMAS med schools yet. And I was wondering whether schools wait for the applications to get verified first before sending in the supplementals. Or should I even call OSU to check with them?

Yeah, it will be 1-2 more weeks before calls and emails go out for interviews. Fun time!

OSU says you can send in their supplemental before they receive primary

OSU says they send out invites two weeks before interview, first interviews are October 21-23. If they wait two weeks before inviting then we will have less than two weeks notice. I bet we will hear something by next Wednesday. OSU calls, no email, at least that's what Lindsay told me and previous applicants.

Who did you guys make the supplement app fee check too? OSU Center for Health Sciences?

I did some research on last years OSU thread; first round interview invites went out on the Monday two weeks before the interviews. So if history holds true, we should hear the phone ring this Monday, hopefully anyways.

Hi everyone - I'm wondering how ya'll answered "Is there anything else you want the College to know about you?" on the secondary.

I thought those questions were for talking about personal characteristics, so I did that at first. Then my pre-med advisor said that those Q's are for talking about awards/honors received since you sent in your app., discrepancies in your app., etc.; but that it is also OK not to answer that question. I haven't received any awards and don't have any discrepancies, so should I use the chance to blab about myself (some more), or would I do better to leave it blank? Any suggestions are great, thanks!

It is a state funded school. Notice of the 36, 15 matriculated.

I went into more depth about my situation and life choices with college. I've done alot of college hopping and changed my degrees more than politicians flip-flop on third rail issues. Though I explained this as much as I could in my personal statement, I used this to explain it more thoroughly

1377 non-resident applicants --> 36 non-resident interviews conducted??? YIKES. I hope I'm reading this wrong.

So your OOS too (i'm from CO)? Good luck to you! This is my top choice school and those numbers are scaring me!

It's funny because so many DO schools are private that I didn't even think to weed out public schools OOS like I did with some MD schools!! Yes, though ... I applied because it's a fantastic school, tops for sure, and good luck to you too. Somebody has got to make up those 36 that interviewed, right??? Do you have any instate ties??

Got the call today, interviewing on the 22!

Does anyone have an idea of when they start to interview OOS applicants? Do they wait until after they have filled the In State Students spots to start calling OOS?

From what I've been told, they will interview oos around the middle, I would think it be before all the in state positions are filled. Maybe some current students with experience can chime in.

Interview invite today for the Oct. 21-23 dates and I'm OOS. Had to opt for a later date due to scheduling conflicts.

What are your stats for being OOS and what ties do you have?

Haha yeah, and someone's got to fill those 15 matriculant shoes too! Definitely my top choice :xf: As far as instate ties, I've never even been to Oklahoma and none of my family's from there. However, most of my family are from Texas, so I'm hoping that'll pull some weight...especially because I really want to do rural medicine, in TX or OK or CO or wherever! 3.9 cGPA 29R MCAT

Look on the bright side, it's not 15 shoes but instead 30! That's double the chances. Of course that does assume everyone has two feet. Sorry, couldn't resist.

Hahaha very funny - easy for you to laugh about since you're an Oklahoman and have a better chance than us! 🙂

I am so excited... too bad the call came in the middle of my biochem test though.

I was in the middle of a genetics test! I almost couldn't finish it I was so excited. I'll be interviewing the 22.

To Current OSU Medical Students:
Anyone be willing to meet the night of October the 21st for Q&A, I'll buy dinner.

Since we are in the same lab, guess I'm screwed huh 😱

You guys are welcome to PM me questions. I went to OSU-COM and am in the last year of my EM residency. School, community, residencies, etc, whatever.

Yea didn't think about that, I just figure since she said no make-up I almost registered for the 22nd, but at the last moment decided the 21st. I'd rather miss lectures than my lab.

I see you're non-trad. Why the career change and all?

I see you're non-trad. Why the career change and all?

That's a somewhat complicated question. 😉

Long story short, I've always wanted to be a doctor, but life kept getting in the way. I've finally resolved all the conflicts, internal and external, that have held me back. Now's my chance, so I'm taking it.

any bridge students out there?

hello, i need some advice:
got mcat score today: 9B 9V 5P and Qwriting
haven't completed primary or secondary apps
should I bother applying this cycle? or raise that horrible 5P and get early app next year?
How about bridge program? I meet all 3 requirements

Talk to DrMom or call the school to get more information and advise. You are late in the cycle and would have much difficulty with the 5 in my opinion. Are you a native English speaker? I would talk to the school and possibly retake the Mcat in January since bridge apps arnt reviewed until march to aprilish.
